----------------------------------------
This chapter was beautiful. I hold a similar stance to Akagi on life, with many thanks to Fukumoto’s other works of course, recently and coincidentally discussing his view of life with a group and without having read this chapter yet. The view of some form of reincarnation, that we will live on even if we lose every sense of self identity. In this discourse I stated that because of this, I don’t fear death nor do I welcome it, I feel neutral on the topic. Yet, with other works such as Kurosawa, I explicitly shifted my goal in life to being the best me I could manage, to give my all no matter how fearsome life was and to live admirably. Clearly I do care about the life I have now more than just feeling “neutral” about losing it one day, but I hadn’t articulated it like Akagi did here. Akagi said it wonderfully. What he fears is not dying but rather losing who he is. Kurosawa once said that sometimes losing may be better than winning, to fight is what matters, and Akagi said it too, that:
“Whether I win or lose, I want to win or lose as Akagi Shigeru”
Conscious of how it makes him look, he knows it’s stubborn, he knows it’s inconvenient, but to do otherwise would do what he fears most, losing himself.

And although I called Ten pragmatic last time, this doesn’t mean he’s so different from Akagi. Not at all. He confirmed here that he would have taken the slip of Harada’s tongue stating “I’d stay in because I couldn’t win if I didn’t stay”. But I want to call back to a striking line from Sawada when the two had first played.
”Why are you laying your life on the line for other people’s sake?”
If I recall, after being asked this it cut and we never saw Ten’s answer, but I would wager fitting in Akagi’s line here would fit perfectly. In this way I feel Ten is much more resonate with the flavour of philosophy found in Kurosawa, yet the foundation is the same for the likes of Akagi. Ten stated it loud and clear, “I’m me. Akagi is Akagi. We can’t all live the same way.” Both these men live admirable lives without a doubt, and I will love to see the life that Hiroyuki develops.

This is the exact kind of chapter which I love most about Fukumoto. And funny enough, it also moved the plot a lot. It revealed, maybe obvious to some, that the final showdown is in fact a simple game of 4 players. Akagi choosing to withdraw was the final step to setting it up. Hiroyuki, the kid, has made it, now a certified legend. Ten wants to be diplomatic and create a bluff to force west into playing a team battle of “clear mahjong”. No points will be involved, it will be more akin to a game than a gamble. He’s looking out for Hiroyuki’s strengths here but with Ten, who the heck knows what this bluff will be. It should be good, that’s for sure.

Wow, I really liked this chapter. I can understand how Akagi feels, and though it may come across as stubborn, he is always 100% true to himself which is admirable. This final game sounds interesting too, it really is a test of teamwork and skill, and reduces the need for luck (or "flow" as they call it) a bit. I am interested to see what tricks the two teams will have up their sleeve!
