Back to back episodes this week.

I didn't feel much thrills from this one though until the end.

This was the "lighter" episode so far. I don't feel the Yami Shibai essence in that episode.

Yeah, with just a little editing and different music choice, this could easily be turned into a vaguely bittersweet, Pinocchio-esque story.

interesting. idk if it meant the doll took their life force, or it was becoming alive all along.

I felt oddly relaxed during this episode. Was it just me, or did the art style seem different this ep?

They are losing touch again. I guess it was supposed to be an emotional episode, as there was a few before in other seasons, but I think even then it wasn't good as the previous ones.

I think that doll took that elderly couple's life force, and that is why it said thank you! What an evil thing!

Wasn't scary though, the muppets are more creepier than doll!

Well didn't expected an un scary episode from this series. I don't think a normal person would be very happy living with a creepy ass doll

If not for the different artstyle then this episode would be totally forgettable. It just happened? Oh, was rather cute than unsettling.

Probably the least scary Yami Shibai episode yet.

Very interesting and thought provoking episode. I always found the doll trope rather creepy. Because it's not alive, but at the same time is supposed to be more than just a symbol. In the end when we watch we just watch doll shows, right? Isn't it creepy that many of us think as if they're human? Isn't anime also sucking our life, because it's us who give life to these dolls? Anyways, it reminds me of the topics presented in the Umineko VN, which even has an OST called "Happiness of Marionette".

It's a trope called uncanny valley. Where something that looks human but not, will be creepier than something that didnt resemble human.

Well I guess if the last episode was meant to destroy my hope for a jump scare-less version of Yami Shibai, this one was intended to prove my theory of the only horror episodes of Yami Shibai season. Which is good I guess, this was probably my favourite of the season thus far, though I'm not sure it was effective as the earlier instances or even better done than the first episode of this season.

I definitely loved the aesthetics this episode, both the drawings and the sound design evoked a different, earlier feeling than typical of Yami Shibai, which worked well with the elderly couple. The thing I like about this is that it is more ambiguous in the doll's intention, considering the doll's first words were "Mother", the one desire from the wife, and the fact that the doll shed a tear prior would certainly imply the doll was genuine. And the scenes had the couple getting progressively older, implying a lengthy passage of time. On the other hand, the doll could've easily been draining their life force, her eyes can be seen moving before the wife passes away, implying she may have been alive previously meaning she chose to wait until her death to talk (or maybe she could only fully come to life after both die), and the "thank you" with the expression and vocal performance seems more sinister to me than grateful.

I think it's fair to interpret it either way, and I do think that's kinda cool. The problem of course, is that means it doesn't tell either the creepy interpretation or the heartwarming interpretation as well as several of the episodes that actually goes for it, so I can understand not viewing that a strength. But as one episode out of over 80, I'm glad there's one like this that exist.

To me, it seems like the doll sucked up their life force, because she didn't fully move until after they both were dead. Also, the "thank you" at the end implies to me, "Thank you for giving me your life force". I could be wrong though.

That doll probably drained their life force.

A bittersweet story.

It was apparent that the doll was 'sucking' their life force/souls and becoming more alive every day

But still a good watch

Also, is it just me or does the doll kinda looks like Makima when she comes to life? She doesn't have her eyes nor her signature red hair but she still kinda looks like her.

I do think the life force stuff is really indicated by the man talking about his wife being more energetic.
However, you could turn this more wholesome ish and play it off that they were reaching their final ends already and the fact the mother at least got to spend her last moments with a daughter and having the doll say Thank you.
I could see this going both ways.
