Don't blame him for trying to get close to Yatogame, she's cute as they come especially with that accent.

Ah, it is a regional rivalry. Well, anywhere not Tokyo in Japan has a hard time anyway due to how massive Tokyo is in terms of population, importance, and prominence for like everything Japan there and abroad.

Very much like the UK in that way when it comes to London.

As for the whole not knowing what some of these smaller places are or that they even exist, it makes sense. Gifu as a city has fewer than 500K people in it with the entire Prefecture just barely over 2 million. Meanwhile Nagoya is the 4th largest city with 3rd largest urban area in Japan. Big difference.

Rivalry wise it would be like Houston hating someone from New York. Makes sense especially since those two regions in general hate each other so much culturally. AND the whole thing about food vs sight seeing.

Despite not knowing much about the area at all and the language jokes going over my head I still found it funny and fun to watch. Helps that it is a cute comedy.

I agree with this. Also the line about having to say you live in a city close to you when you don't is universally relatable. It's even worse when they don't know where the large city close to you is. I grew up 45 minutes away from Cincinnati, a city of 300,000 in the US state of Ohio, so I know (strangely enough, probably about as far as Mie was from Nagoya).
The whole part about Japanese people not knowing where those prefectures are is kind of surprising. The prefectures aside from Hokkaido are not much bigger in land area than most American counties so it shouldn't be too hard to memorize where each of them are. Especially if Americans are able to memorize where all 50 states are. The fact that they also have large populations should help in memorizing where they are. I, an American, even knew where Mie and Gifu were. But then again, I'm very good at geography and I've spent hours exploring Japan on Google Earth. I've also heard that many people don't know the locations of each of the states so I must be a unique case.

I wouldn't say unique, but a minority to say the least. Mom mom didn't even know Florida was a peninsula when we visited there. Bad geography skills are very common in the US I am afraid.
