Volume 8: Tonan no Tsubasa

This book is AMAZING. Not only we get to see Shushou's amazing intelligence and character, we find out more that the protector god of the Yellow Sea and the one who got riboku for the Yellow People, Kenrou Shinkun, is no other than the boy Kouya that Rokuta befriended 400 hundred years ago (during Atsusu's rebellion in En).

Not only this, but we also discover that Rikou, who accompanied Shushou during her Ascension, is no other than one of the ruling prince of Sou. And on top of that, we discover how the Kingdom of Sou functions, with the entire royal family ruling and not only the king.

And Shushou is now officially amongst my favourite characters of Juuni Kokki...

Definitely one of the most epic book of the series. It's really a shame it wasn't adapted into anime....

Ono-sensei, you have to keep writing Juuni Kokki books or short stories.... This just has too much potential.....

The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

I haven't read the previous tomes but have only seen the anime, I would say that it's the 2nd best arc so far, after the Kaze no banri, reimei no sora arc.

I appreciated it for 2 reasons:

-the character of Shushou.
I knew that she definitely was more than the "annoying brat" that we briefly see during the anime. She sure had already some qualities before her trip, determination an analytical and logical mind, and a huge integrity but she was still is a child at the same time, lacked experience of "real world" as she was raised in a well of familly relatively protected from the Yoma and a certain consequent arrogance. The voyage through the Yellow Sea definitely forge her character and made her worthy of being chosen by the Kirin, although in many way her mind is still is childish, at the same time she is also more mature than ant children and many adult, even acting as a true queen at a few occasions.

-The whole way of life of the Koshu, how the author really created a different culture and mindset and show how the communication is difficult between them and the other people of the 12 kingdoms because of the different paradigm. Overcoming the barrier of the culture and making a sincere effort to understand the Koshu was probably the key in the development of Shushou's character, it especially allows her to understand her own inner contradiction. Rikou and his "divine" way of thinking as a third way was a nice addition to the opposition between Shushou and Gankyu.

It's certainly unnecessary to the story, one can considers it at fan service, but I wish we could see a bit more of Shushou as a queen and her first few reforms :S
