This show doesn't care about side characters, people may call it "sigma MC", but I say that it's bad writing.

Well, first ig I should make clear that Kenichi is an as*hole, I mean maybe he is too old but he really doesn't care about women or any relationship for that matter. I have met people like him irl and tbh they are not great human beings, I mean people like him vanish in the time of need, Kenichi helping and killing the bandits was very weird according to his overall character, and that's why I said that the writing is bad.

Also, the way he left everyone without saying a word was weird too, he left all the girls without saying a word or a measly letter, even didn't tell the granny that he is taking the kid away, but just bailed out. The anime also doesn't talk about them or show them, they are literally treated like NPCs in the story and are just there to make our MC shine.

I don't mind him ditching Primula, but the way he did that was way bad, she has romantic feelings for him, but for him atleast she was a friend, all I am saying is that he could write a letter to her, but no, she was treated like roadside trash, and this leads to my main point, if he thinks of Primula like that, it's super weird he went to help her from the bandits, the show made him do that because he is the "MC", not because he is "Kenichi".

Rest idk, he wants to live a slow life, but at the end his whole power is shopping of new age items, meaning that he will attract attention anyways and it's inevitable for him to hide for life, and this is not Spice and Wolf. I can see why the ratings are low, I mean if the story acknowledged that our MC is scum (like Mushoku or Konosuba), I would have liked the story more, but the writing devoid any type of feeling from the whole story.

He only agreed to help get rid of the bandits only because Primula life was in danger. Otherwise, I don't think he would have gotten involved. He knew what he was getting into ahead of time and still chose to do it. So I don't think that was a change of character.

Not saying goodbye was probably a better choice. Who knows what other factions were by then. I would assume the Anti Monarch faction were not the only ones that are investigating him by then. Anyone he said goodbye to could have brought in and tortured for information and even used as hostages if they thought they were close to him. I feel it was best he left without saying anything.

He claims he wants to live a slow life. He used power tools in the middle of a forest to clear out the land and build a cabin. The noise alone should have been alarming. Plus, being the only one living in the middle of monster infested forest should warrant a lot of attention. I'm surprised he wasn't found out earlier and captured. He was even lucky to find an honest trading company early on to sell his more extravagant goods. If he tried peddling them in a small booth, he would get him found out early also.

I don't agree that he is scum or an asshole (maybe just because I see him as a great deal more generous and altruistic than I would be in the same situation and I don't want to self-disparage, even if the author's slight of hand is very visible in driving certain cliched actions of his). Some people just don't wish to involve themselves in a community and all its social gossip and bickering, politics, and drama. Some will seek to sever all contact and their own involvement at the first signs or indication that a relationship they deem burdensome and an entanglement is developing. That's called being very individually-oriented and having different interests and priorities than many of your would-be neighbors and peers. It does also mean that you may encounter trouble and problems with living in a community in the long run, but then, he ran off to go live further into the woods or somewhere else in the countryside, so he's dealing with the issue himself.

I do agree that it's a very inconsistently written show, the problems with his characterization lie at the heart of it, and the other major issue of character writing is the side characters just phantom appearing into and falling out of central prominence. The original author liberally uses and dispenses with every element of the plot, world/setting, and other characters as needed all in the service of polishing and providing a lit stage for Kenichi to jump in and save the day. And since there is very little to no build-up or satisfying aftermath after many of those individual events and moments, it comes across as quite sloppy, rushed, and shallow treatment. But it's a lazy, wish fulfillment, self-insert (maybe equally for the author as much as some of the viewers), harem power fantasy. I feel as if that was evident from the first episode.

I like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, but I'm not one of those who sings its praises to the heavens or holds it up as revolutionary. And even yet still I think that comparing this series to something like Mushoku Tensei is almost besides the point as the gulf between them in terms of an attempt at serious storytelling is so vast that it's just not even worth discussing or weighing them. In terms of a sense of the toll of death and mortality, the fear and mystery and wonder of waking up in a new universe, and the absolute daunting and mentally overwhelming odyssey that would be for the character concerned to even begin processing, Mushoku Tensei relayed more of it in its first six minutes than this did in six episodes.
