I might really get too much hate from this, maybe a lot, but I don't like the male mc of this anime. However, a lot of people have been recommending me that this anime is really good and it "grows" on you, given this, is this anime enjoyable even if I don't like the male mc. Of course I like Anna.

edit: I am actually enjoying it, thanks for all the replies!

I don't particularly like Ishikawa either. He makes everything so awkward it irritated me, but I still love the anime and it's definitely worth fully watching atleast once

Depends on how much you don't like him. If you dislike the fact that he exists on the show, there's probably no reason to watch it.

If you just don't like some episodes of his behavior, then it's worth a try, cause he'll change in the future.

@bozhepomogi I don't fully "dislike" Ishikawa. I am just trying to get some affirmation about whether he will "change" and be "likable" in the show's latter half, but based on what you said, I guess this is worth a try.

Don’t like the mc but I still enjoyed it. Most other parts of the show are enjoyable so I’d say give it a go.

For me the second half is way better than the first half, and i think ichikawa starts to be more "likable" in episode 4 or 5

agreed. I can hardly stand him in the first half of Season 1 but after that he's a lot better

Honestly, I really don’t get why people ask questions like this.

Personally, I loved this anime, both seasons, the story is really enjoyable, I liked the two MCs, and some of the side characters too, plus I even liked the Sub & Dub of the anime.

But none of that really matters unless you have a reason to respect my own personal opinion.

The only person in the universe that will know if it was worth the watch for you, is you.

A million people can love something, but you can hate it, that is just how life goes.

Since day one on MAL, I have “planned to watch” anime that have interested me, and that has been hard enough, without trying other’s interests.

Honestly, I have given some anime a chance after a friend recommended it, but that is a hit and miss.
ejleonDec 4, 2024 6:56 AM
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

The MC changes a lot throughout the show, but if you don't like him regardless, then you can still like the wishful fantasy of a popular highschool model falling for a creepy loner midget.

Ichikawa is a nice boy imo. He goes through development as the series progresses. I kinda like his chuuni personality. His horny behavior can be justified considering his age. I'd say watch it. He grows as a character and you may end up liking him.

I wouldn't say he has any "horny" behavior. i never noticed he having those horny thought like other romance anime. The honry and ecchi part of this anime is on the lesser side imo

He once went to school toilet after an interaction with Anna. Also, he once wonders that does he really like Anna or it's just some sexual desire because Adachi mentions that you can't ma*trubate thinking about someone you love. So, you get the point.

But as i said, imo it's understandable and kinda normal behavior as he's in middle school.

The stupid concept at the start, that Ishikawa is a psychopath dreaming of murder, is just a pointless hook to bring edgy kids to a wonderful teen romance between an unlikely couple. That is over within 3 episodes and after that it’s pure cinema. Best romance of its year. Every episode left me buzzing and overstimulated. Must watch it back in binge form, thanks for the reminder!

Im guessing you mean you dont like how he looks like or his type since you havent watch it. This story besides a romcom it can also be a coming of age, ichikawa does have character development which is more noticeable in s2. Plus ichikawa can be wishy washy at times, but when he really needs to be direct and secure he does deliver unlike many mcs of this genre.

Honestly the trick is to, much like the anime did, completely ignore the murder plot because it's irrelevant after like 3 eps and enjoy it as a normal romcom with a loner MC. This will make the MC much better overall.

Tbh, i used to hate the mc and literally laugh at him. but now, after finishing it catching up with the manga, i realized how good the anime actually is. The mc might seem like quiet and annoying but his inner thoughts and stuff make it a lot more enjoyable and fun to watch. Ichikawa’s personality really grows on you and actually is good now that i really think about it.

I didn't like him at first because he was pretty drunge and edgy but the character really grew on me. He has great character development.

Ichikawa and Yamada's romantic relationship getting closer alongside their own individual personal journey learning to confront their insecurities and accept the awkward parts of growing up is the core of the story.

A big part of why many came to like it is (myself included) is watching them both grow as a person.

I can understand not liking Ichikawa in the beginning because of how he is and the way he deludes himself as a way of coping. Its definitely annoying. Especially if you're watching this show as an adult, and not a middle schooler.

But yes, this show is worth it. I hope you come to enjoy his character later, especially into Season 2. Its definitely worth it in my opinion.

Can’t speak for people who dislike ichikawa cause I personally liked his character, but I’d probably say it’s not worth since ichikawa isn’t written to be a character that the audience dislikes.

Like some people pointed out, his situation is kinda similar to Rudy.
If you endure first episode, you'll be rewarded because he ditches his plan to murder Yamada pretty quickly and noone of it is even mentioned.
He grows and matures a lot over the course of the series, so your patience will be rewarded.

@Htun__ that's realistic middle school romance anime for you where the character is still at puberty phase.

I don't understand how can someone hate or dislike ichikawa, I think they're misunderstood his character and his intention. Ichikawa is realistic depiction of introvert middle school character that never interact with the other and has a closed mind and only believes what he thinks, and don't care what other people think. He also has this called chunibyou thing where he like to imagine and fantasizing about this murder and these behavior is pretty much common for middle school character who like to imagine & has wide fantasy. But ichikawa never really serious about these murder thing, also at the first he also didn't understand about his feelings towards yamada, he conflicted about it and linked it towards his chunibyou fantasy that's why he thought he want to murder yamada but in the end it's just him having a crush on her, it just he didn't understand those feeling because it's the first time he ever feel that. Also towards the anime ichikawa written as good character with real personality and he has grow to be better person & character. Ichikawa is very likable and his monologue is one of the funniest thing in the series. Or is it because ichikawa sometimes feels horny that why people didn't like him?? Idk I don't get it, ichikawa is in his puberty phase. Or maybe because his character design??

There are definitely elements of Ichikawa's character at the beginning that are purposefully grating. His performative edginess and superiority complex stem from deep insecurity and immaturity, and I was surprised at how quickly the show made it clear that's what it was.

His turn-around is gradual, but not slow, exactly. It's a lot of him realizing thar the people around him are genuinely nice, and he's being a child for acting otherwise. By the time the second season starts, he's shifted from the wannabe edgelord to an awkward kid trying not to overstep around his crush; and he's aware of how much he's changed.

All in all, yes, Ichikawa does change drastically during the show, and his flaws at the beginning are thoroughly examined to make him understand why he not only needs to change, but wants to.

Don’t judge Ichikawa by the first episode. He gets so much character development as the series progresses and you will understand why he acts that way later.
