news reports are saying this will only be 20 episodes show but 6 episodes in and its still feels like the story will go for more longer than 20 episodes

so thoughts? i expect this to be at least 50 episodes total or even 100 episodes in best case situation

I don't know. I can see it ending in 20 episodes but also going for 50 or more. Though honestly, I would not prefer longer option. Based on this few episodes so far, I'm hating it.

Either theses 20 episodes are the ones Toriyama wrote and the staff will carry on after or the last 6 episodes will be rushed to end it.

well its not really "only" 20, maybe for dragon ball series it might sound short, but its longer than 99% of airing seasonal anime still, and probably yes since it already progressed quite a lot, dragon ball heroes was 56 episodes, which was the previous dragon ball anime before daima

I don’t know but I think it will go longer, the OP really makes it seem like Piccolo, Vegeta, and Bulma will be exploring with the main group too before we get to the main plot or fights

Good question, I would not be surprised if this is a shorter one. Then again the B team has yet to actually catch up. I doubt it will be 50+ though.

what is the point of a Dragon Ball series if its not long running? Dragon Ball is the definition of long running.

All the news reports about it being 20 episodes are misreports stemming from an official statement. Someone involved with the production revealed "Daima will be 20-ish episodes" and everyone starte reporting "Daima will be 20 episodes".
Going by anime norms it will probably be 24-26 episodes. And that makes sense from what I have seen so far.

SPOILERS AHEAD

8 episodes in and goku has already obtained the first dragon ball. Now two tamagami are left along with the majin buu successor. There might also be fights involing Gomah and Degesu. And I have a personal theory that Neva will restore his youth and turn out to be one of the antagonists. I think about 18 episodes would be enough to cover all that. And Panzy revealed that the third world is a lot bigger than the other two. Which means the other two worlds will have less to explore.

@Dumb I have the same feeling as you about the OP... it appears to be the OP of an introductory arc that will be replaced by another when there is a breakthrough in the story or change of arc.

@-lies- What do you think a 'new arc' will be about? What will happen after they have undone Gomah's wish? Obviously this story ends there.

@Captain-577 "Obviously" is a strong word...

This story could have ended in several ways:

Piccolo Jr.'s defeat at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai
Freeza's defeat and Goku's death on Namek
Cell's defeat by Gohan and Goku's sacrifice
Boo's defeat and a happy ending for everyone

After all these "endings" they managed to create new things, so I'm still waiting, huahuahuahua

I'm really enjoying this Dragon Ball "road movie", I wish they would expand it more and more

@Captain-577 I don’t think it will be dragged out too long but it seems like Arinsu is shaping up to be the real final villain of the series now

@Dumb That won't be a new arc. If you have watched episode 8, you will know who's really going to be the big threat of Daima.

@Captain-577 We haven’t even reached the second demon world, or met up with Vegeta and Piccolo yet who could pad the run time even more with character interactions. -lies- and I were just saying that the current pace it could easily go beyond 20 episodes when you consider worldbuilding and a big climatic battle with Gomah (Or now, Arinsu and the new Majin). I can also just see them speedrunning the rest of the demon worlds and wrapping it up in 20 eps too

@Dumb You might be thinking about it in terms of how the previous anime adaptions were paced. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime weren't very faithful to the manga and they had added insane amount of bs just to drag out the series. With Daima, it is seems to be the exact opposite. The story directly comes from Toriyama and he even supervised the project. And so far the pacing seems to be very similar to Toriyama's manga.

The newest Tamagami fight is a clear example of this. It was quick and concise, lasting only five minutes instead of Frieza's five minutes on Namek. And ofcourse there is a new world to explore, but world-building is going hand in hand with the story. Goku entered the third world in episode 3 and it only took 5 episodes to accomplish the goal. We have already seen glimpses of the second world, which is smaller than third world. And the first world is probably not really a vast 'world', but more so the capitol territory for the royal palace.

I believe it will be 26 episodes, they even decided to cut the dragon ball count from seven to three in order to make things quick. But there are a few things that go against this theory. The battle against Majin Buu successor might be justifiably long spanning multiple episodes. But but it could also be only a couple of episodes.

Dunno, is there any reason to trust those rumors? 20 episodes is an odd amount in this day and age. That said, it doesn't have to be a continuous series, maybe it ends in 24 episodes and we get a season two eventually.

@Captain-577 Admittedly yeah I haven't read the manga so I don't know how tight the pacing there is, but still based on the journey so far I'd expect it to be a little slow. But yeah I agree of what you've said, and one reason we've spent so long in the third world anyway is due to thieves or the government interfering but I dont' see them slowing the plot down with Piccolo and Vegeta around. And I totally agree that the first world part will just be about the royal palace. And I'm actually very grateful we won't have any dragged-out fight scenes unless they're climatic of course

26 episodes is a lot more normal and reasonable than 20 episodes, yeah, I totally see that being the episode count too. I just think 20 episodes would be a bit too short and unnatural

@Dumb To give you an idea of how stupid the anime adaptation was - the longest fight in the manga, Goku vs Frieza was about 20 chapters. If they stayed faithful to the manga then it would had been around 5-8 episodes instead of the wild nonsense they decided to pull.

@Captain-577 I wish they just did pure filler episodes (I love slice of life dragonball) instead of dragging it out. Although admittedly, there was not much they could do in the Saiyan-Namek stretch. Original Dragonball had the perfect balance of little padding and pure filler between arcs

@Dumb The first Dragon Ball series was probably even worse in terms of filler. As someone who had read the manga first I just kept saying wtf all the time. They invented so many characters and elements that made no sense and were straight up weird honestly.

One example would be Piccolo.Jr's introduction. In the manga demon king Piccolo is defeated by Goku. In his final moments he spits out an egg which is his clone son Piccolo. At the end of the chapter there's a single panel showing kid Piccolo who vows revenge on Goku. In the anime, an elderly couple finds the egg laying around. They decide to take the egg home, hoping to adopt the child that'll hatch from it. After coming out of the egg, Piccolo burns their house and announces he'll kill Goku. It's such a WTF sequence.

I am very gald Toriyama was the supervisor on the later project, especially the last two movies and Daima.

@Captain-577 Hmmm I guess we have different tastes I really like some of the expanded parts, like seeing Namu after the 1st tournament ended, Tambourine go on a massacre, or Goku and Chi Chi go on a final adventure (the plot for that one was kind of ridiculous, but it really showed how much Goku had grown from a forest boy who didn’t know what girls were).

But yeah, most of the fillers were kind of wack or repetitive i give you that, i even remembered they gave a fake backstory for the dragon balls like 3 times lol. But pure filler episodes are still easier to dismiss and ignore than padding in canon fights.

episode count become with the cost of animation

if a series is ongoing for 100+ episodes from week to week it will have terrible animation like super had

if a series instead doing seasonal runs of 20 each season and they work for 2 years straight for each season then daima is what you get, you may not like it but you cant deny that this series is going above and beyond in the animation department. it looks like movie tier animation

i much prefer daima over the boring super with its cluster writing and bjilion transformation and 30+ episodes of the most boring tournament ever

not always true a long running anime can still maintain consistent animation quality if the management is great look at hunter x hunter 2011 and even the later arcs of one piece tv for a long time now

its been known that dragon ball super has horrible production management with strict production time

meanwhile daima episodes are being made as early as 2022 or 2023
