I still don't like this show very much, even when I'm absolutely relieved that they didn't go in a more controversial, "spicy" direction.
I did check out the trailer beforehand, and it did look like it was leaning a little more wholesome and thoughtful. But what I did not expect was the show to be so shockingly boring and unlikable, especially after it chose such a daring and promising concept.
All three of them got used to the situation way too fast for my tastes. I get that they don't want to make the story too depressing and want to get to the good, "wholesome" stuff, but it also made the whole thing feel almost trivial. The mom was the weirdest, she acted completely matter-of-fact, when she would've been the most horrified person in that situation. The dad and the daughter both go "it's you!" within 2 minutes, and they just feel like extremely dumb people, and not in an endearing way. Then the mom offers to make bento? You guys just met after 10 years in extremely weird circumstances! And the other two immediately accept the offer? You're really going to make your mom/wife who returned from the dead in a child's body... to cook for you?
The dad especially comes across as a very careless and irresponsible person. Again, not in an endearing way. The way he keeps declaring his love for his wife in public, takes photos of her for his wallpaper and plans a trip to go on with his wife is just obviously idiotic and makes for predictable "comedy." The way he mentions to his wife that he ate a bento that a much younger girl made for him was just irritating; has this man really been married for 15 years? And did he even ask his wife what her "new" name is, and what her current situation is?
The "bento buddy" storyline and mom's school life were also simple, and there wasn't much interesting about them. The family situation of the mom's alternate self might have some interesting implication, but the abusive mother set-up feels pretty cliche.
It's doesn't help that I'm not a fan of the art style, and the animation is pretty basic. The characters come across as blank-faced head-empty marionettes, with the exception of the mom, maybe.
I do think I might be too hard on this show, but I'm just not satisfied with "I'm so happy you're back now, let's hang out!" level of storytelling and characters. Maybe it'll go some place later? But it might be too difficult for me to keep watching. |
