I don't see how that helps the story either.
This is a fast-paced, impulsive, wacky anime. What was it going to accomplish by exploring 3 other characters' traumatic pasts?
Skipping it fits the idea that dwelling on past regrets and on things that can no longer be changed will just torment a person needlessly. Powering forward to the things that can still be changed is the better course of action.

A fast-paced, wacky story that constantly harps on about the past, regrets, trauma, and moving on. A station about making peace with your demons sounds like exactly the kind of story you'd want to take when your only other alternative is a stupid gag station that goes out of its way to spite the characters at the last second by literally killing off the person they'd been trying to help the whole time. Skipping the station just comes off as running from their problems.

Pontaro has been set up as the main antagonist, fair assumption they must fight him, and a train-to-train battle seems like a reasonable writing choice. Hauling Yoka back to Ikebukuro just to push the button feels like it would break the pace, especially when they can just take it with them.

You talk about "breaking the pace", but we got, like, five or six problems that existed just to be solved in less than a minute by random bullshit. Taking her back to push the button doesn't break the pacing any more than, say, literally stopping the train, then having the zombies magic the button over to them with their newfound blob powers, or have a stupid fork in the tracks to have the dog just bark the solution at them and they understand somehow, or having the zombies use their blob powers to fix a broken track for no reason.

So...
Change tracks by hitting lever with arrow. (Not sure why Nadeshiko sits on the window in an almost-falling-off position.)
Zombie bridge. (I find the zombies flying out of the train to form the bridge ahead of it a little too weird.)
Slow train to avoid gun-train's broadside attacks.
Zombies stop train tipping.
Take sub-bosses out in one hit.
Pontaro shoots own train's guns off.
Board enemy train.

I'm not a fan of the zombie bridge, but these all seem like valid moves for the battle in question, much like swinging a sword is a valid move in a swordfight, or steering is a valid move for a car chase.

At the start of the episode, I almost wanted to shout at the characters to just take the button like Zenjiro told them too, because they might need it later, and it might have a different effect if Yoka pushes it. Then again, these are the characters that couldn't figure out the swan-boat man's map. Having Makoto's voiceover blend into just a few shots of the zombies carrying it over gives the impression that they didn't take long at all to fetch the button, but 15 minutes later, it'll just seem a lot further away if they left it in Ikebukuro. Better for it to be right there on the train once they've managed to convince Yoka to push it.

Also splitting the episode between battle and drama just feels balanced to me.

I feel like they should've taken a bit more time with the ending at the expense of the "filler stations" on the trip. But it was a good one nonetheless.

In the end, in a season where I had a hard time keeping up with my seasonals, this show was the only one I never fell behind on too much. It has great world-building and always had me hooked on what to see next. Not to mention it also a great job diveing deep into philosophical questions without having the viewers feel disconnected due to the diffrence of circumstances.

I also don't have many gripes with the show, maybe some of the characters could've gotten some more depth and there was more potential for the ending. But I never felt bored while watching, so it's not that big of a deal.

In the end, it gets "only" 8/10. Very close to 9/10, but for me, it's not on the same level as similar works such as Trigun Stampede or Shokei Shoujo Virgin Road. Would still recommend it any time though!

I feel like Pontaro being turned into egg custard is too light a punishment for what he had done, since that just means he gets a quick and easy end without doing any repentance. I think this could have maybe a sequel movie titled "Train from the end of the world" if it wanted to, showing their return trip and how the new world is like.

Overall, I liked this anime. Always interesting to see all the weird things at different stations.

Peak seasonal anime. Probably one of the best anime originals i have watched. The chemistry between the girls and there yapping was also really well done, i will miss this show and we don't need a second season.

Pretty sure this whole anime was the ultimate advertisement and flex of how great Japanese trains are lol. I mean, this train survived through hell and still kicking lol.

Overall was a great anime, at the end most things made sense. Kinda disappointed in the final episode, wanted the button to turn everything back to normal, but in the end the only thing changed was that they reunited with Yoka. In fact, it's kinda a depressing ending, noone turned back.

I saw the ending coming from a mile away tbh. The conflict of the show falls into the age old tv trope of “two characters neglect to communicate with each other and a lot of avoidable drama happens”. Also the main villain was pretty terrible. Going into this show I was hoping it’d be a lot longer and it would spend more time showing the girls exploring the wacky world, like maybe a kino’s journey vibe, but they wanted to wrap up a story with an immensely detailed, layered and beautiful world in just 12 episodes. Kind of sad.

The fight scene reminded me a lot of the final boss battle in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks! Train tracks running through a dimension of purple, with the bad guy being on another train shooting at you :P

Super random-weird-adventurous Cute Girls anime. Simple yet triggers our curiosity.

- Fist half I was enjoying good amount and I would rate it 8/10.
- Then after the zombie arc it kinda gets super hyper random and I wasn´t understand anything (not that it was something to understand though xD). At this moment I kinda got bored.
- Then episodes 11 and 12 woke me up and I get back to enjoy.

My truly only complain is that it just ended like that? I mean, not even showing them getting back to Agano? I really did miss an epilogue here and I really think it was necessary for a more solid and satisfying closure. I noticed that, however, for some reason, some original animes usually suffers from sudden/abrupt endings like that, which is super unfortunate. An OVA would be nice.

In general 7/10

Can anybody spoil me why Shizuru chose 'apogee' as the train name?

Decent finale.

Overall, an average show. Interesting premise, but the plot became too weird. The dialogue was also too fast.

It's not a spoiler. It was explained in the anime.

It's an astronomy term (in line with Youka's interests). And because it mirrors their journey in seeking out Youka. In multiple ways they were at the furthest point from finding and being with Youka again - literally physically, at the other end of the train line (especially if, as theorized, everything else in the world outside the train line and towns and cities on the line disappeared as a result of the 7G disaster), and more symbolically, also emotionally and psychologically (for Shizuru specifically, since the rift created between them when their friendship was marred with the falling out). In astronomical terminology it's when the moon is at the furthest point of orbit from the Earth. And because it's already at the furthest point, it can only get closer. Like them on their journey.

With there being such a focus on trains throughout, it only makes sense that the conclusion involved them somehow, no matter how ridiculous.
Due to how strange the premise has been in the majority of episodes I was wondering how they would bring it to an end, but it seems they went with a relatively wholesome but predictable one.
The conversation between the group and Youka was definitely emotional, with that at least making the ending a little more impactful.

Solid final with train battle suits well with this anime theme about the train. So they succeeded, or rather they manage to return Yoka back to normal at least. The ending theme is actually their trip back to Agano which actually insane just to thing about how Yoka already there the entire ed theme back there. Zombie queen girl keeps being their queen without being zombie. Cool. Apogee explained after having girls doing apologize and they go with the Apogee making it normal how the committee use the ApogeeGo name.

Now i need to take some chill pill and forget how rushed everything else.

Optimism!

They had 2 bitter gourd bushes from Agano, a junkie map from a homeless guy on a swan boat, a bag of sedative mushrooms from Higashi-Agano, 5 laughing roots from Koma, a pinch of mini-speedballs from the doctor from Inariyama-koen, a box of suspicious stew from the fake zombie queen from Kiyose, and a whole lot of itchy catalysts from Higashi-Kurume... Also, depressants of all kinds and colours from Hibarigaoka, slutty cosplay costumes of mahou shoujo and her friends from Oizumi-Gakuen, as well as a bimbo gyaru, a nerdy little flatlander, a boobed archer, a freshly minted Judo-train driver, the missing 7G Queen of Ikebukuro and a dog with Vietnamese flashbacks who likes to sniff mushroom butts. Not that they needed all that for the trip, but once you start packing for a trip to Ikebukuro, it's hard to stop. The only thing I was worried about was the 7G. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than the 7G-irradiated inhabitants of Ikebukuro and their 'queen' who rules the local reality, and I knew they'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.
