the surrender is too easy, the submitting is even crazier

It was foreshadowed, the enemy lord risked all his treasury on a pathetic excuse of an army(5 WHOLE mercenaries) and had his mage captured, there was no point for him to fight against 2 evil seals users and given his treasury he couldn't exactly afford to retreat either.

Submitting is not that bad, it doesn't look like the fight had actual casualties, plus it isn't too weird in a feudal settings for web of alliances to switch quickly.

So on that front it's not unrealistic, though still IMO it's way too rushed nonetheless.
Thanks for the explanation. Now it kinda makes more sense.

I was rather confused as to the characters' motives, before I read this. At least this is some way to understand them.

Though I'm pretty sure at least a few people died there.

Lack of any attempt at setup hurts this series a lot. A generic opening wouldn't necessarily sink a series because there are a lot of directions one could go with in an empire-building plot. But the problem with Grancrest so far is that things just kind of...happen.

For instance, it seems like mages serve as the second hand to the lord. For the most part it seems like a binding, lifelong commitment (until the crest is stripped). For Siluca to commit to Theo so fast on so little information makes very little sense. The notion that Siluca would want to find someone more idealistic makes perfect sense; the speed at which she committed doesn't.

As another example, it makes sense that David is content with serving under a lord. But there's no indication beforehand that this was something he was thinking about. More importantly, he saw his mage get caught and immediately surrendered with no prior interaction with Theo. This happened literally right after Moreno was like there's no way he'd surrender. Yes, someone who served him thought it would be out of character. I think the audience has every right to feel the same.

Anyway, this isn't horrible. But if they only spent a little more time on details and setup it would be very nice.
Agreed. A lot of the stuff that's happened so far seems somewhat poorly explained. It's stuff that could make sense, but I just feel out-of-the-loop.

A bit better than the first episode but the ending is very bad. I mean, why do you surrender? People died there, tell me why??! 2/5
To be honest it's plausible that he was going for either an easy victory or just back out. One could say he read the tide of battle -- he wasn't that rich in resources and troops to start with, and once he saw he wasn't winning easily, then even if he could win a battle of attrition he'd still be pretty weak to an attack from a neighbor.

Better to ally himself to a powerful rival than to try too hard to beat up said rival, I guess.

those mages got tired kind of quickly, huh? that's fine. that's more realistic than fighting for multiple episodes straight haha (though, anime isn't necessarily meant to be "realistic")
My guess is that somehow Theo was able to tell that Moreno ran out of magic or was getting worse at it, so Moreno fighting Siluca basically left him pretty exhausted too. Or, there's something he knows about magic that we don't, because otherwise I'm not sure why Theo, with his apparently-decent-but-not-the-best swordfighting skill, would go up against the mage.

Alternatively, he expected Siluca to be able to back him up, but from what he said, I don't think that was the case either.

So I'm not really sure, honestly.

impressive that the attacking guy swore fielty to theo. i didn't think he had that wisdom. and he clearly valued his mage, which was a nice gesture as well. prior to the fight i thought maybe some of his soldiers or especially the mercenaries would defect, but i didn't expect him to align with theo
Me neither, though in retrospect it doesn't seem like a bad idea.
