well damn..that was a rollercoaster. This anime was overhyped by my friend and some people when I made a forum about recommending good horror anime.

Another had a strong start..but it was utterly trash. The plot, characters, and twists were so bad and messed up lmao. So many plot holes and overused "ANIME LOGIC" jutsu. The last 2 episodes went from 1 to 100 pretty quickly. There was no horror; gore and creepiness were its main strong points. It was pretty..bad...
but..
Oh boy, I had fun, It was so fun seeing them trying the most creative death. There was a funny moment where a dude barely escaped a chandelier and was running then suddenly a pillar crushed him lmao. I had so much fun watching this shit lol. Definitely recommend it to people if they just wanna have silly fun.

You don't need deep characters for a slasher movie (anime).

Ow yeah. I’ve had multiple people calling this the best horror anime. You’re not alone. Maybe somebody here could explain why it’s such a good horror anime? I personally thought it was alright but nothing more.

The show didn't have a base explanation for all of the things happening but I can't see it as a bad show how you mentioned

The two mc are by far the best and most probably the only important characters left of the show and if you don't like them then you probably won't like the show as a whole

The horror aspect of the show held out pretty well in the first half

The character deaths on the other side were pretty creative and interesting

a 7/10 or an 8 for me but depending on perspective it can drop lower

8.5/10 anime
not that kind of horror which I expected
kind of a thriller genre i guess but not bad to keep me hyped up till last ep

Wake up to reality! Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world. The longer you live, the more you realize that the only things that truly exist in this reality are merely pain, suffering and futility.Everywhere you look in this world, wherever there is light, there will always be shadows to be found as well.As long as there is a concept of victors, the vanquished will also exist. The selfish intent of wanting to preserve peace, initiates war and hatred is born in order to protect love.

I liked the atmosphere and mystery for the first few episodes. But it falls hard. Only thing saving it from being below a 4/10 was the music for me which I thought was quite good throughout.

A lot of people call this the best horror anime which is not hard when horror anime are generally not good at all. So I guess that's something. It disturbed me with the deaths more than it did make me scared. I still remember watching the umbrella scene as a teenager and being like WTF.

At first it was interesting. The mystery was intriguing. Then the pacing up was good too but it lost me in the last episode. I liked how they gradually killed those characters but I don't get the significance of anything that happened in the last episode, the deaths and the solution. Until the last episode it was 8/10 and with the last one it became 5/10 for me.

I totally love it, but it's also not great. There's not really much good horror anime out there. One point I will argue though, is that creepiness and gore equals horror. That's a massive subset of horror. Not all horror, but a lot. What do you define as horror, just out of curiosity? I like the manga adaptation of the novel a lot more. The novel was pretty good too, but focused more on mystery vibes rather than creepiness.

End of the day, I think it just comes down to whether or not you like camp in your horror or not.

While this anime lacked much depth and clarity that would’ve made it much better overall, calling it trash is a little harsh in my opinion. I thought that the potential was there and the overall mood made it quite enjoyable to watch.

Honestly I felt the same. The show went from a genuinely interesting mystery and thriller to a B rate slasher flick. Since the anime was a disappointment for me I picked up the manga and it was way better. They fixed a lot of the problems that the anime had, and the twists actually make sense. If your interested definitely read the manga, but it’s not required.

Light novel is much better and is preferable over the manga. Last parts did not happen in the light novel.

@Chronon Nah, there is a sequel novel that takes place in 2001 and it is happening yet again. I think the only way to get rid of it for good is to just burn down the school or abandon it, and, well, that is not going to happen. Well, unless...

I hope the author has some plans. The premise is interesting but very localised and slow in a sense. It would require a lot of development to get to the point of burning the school.

The novel is very slow, but that is mainly due to trying to build up suspense. Now I have no idea how the sequeal ends as I have not read it yet, so me talking about burning the school down is just one of the only ways that I believe the curse can be lifted permanently.

I guess what I consider horror is mainly something scaring the fuck out of me with its atmosphere, not some gory or creepy things. It's quite easy to scare people with just some brutal death scenes or a creepy head twisting scene but
scaring people with atmosphere alone is quite hard and nearly impossible for an anime.

I read it. I loved it. There may also be another book in the future. As far as burning the school, I have a feeling it might go the same way it already has - switching classrooms did nothing. Switching to the new school building did nothing. I think it's directly tied to Yomi North and it might take completely closing the school/school district to make it stop. But because of the strange nature of the occurrences and people's memories and stuff, it would never happen because the town at large wouldn't understand the phenomena.

Gotcha. that makes sense. I love pretty much all types of horror, but my favorite tends to be cosmic/Eldritch horror, and surreal horror. I don't like a monster or whatever to be directly revealed for the most part. Confusion and mystery really heightens it for me.

@Nyamaste Thanks for the short review. I believe I will be getting that, and the old novels, for Christmas, hopefully, if my sister can find hard copies of them. And I do hope he writes more. As for my theory... I think if it could end at all it would be to burn down the school or close it or whatnot, otherwise I do not think it could ever really end. And even then it may not end, as it is clearly tied to town, since the only memories altered are those within the town and you cannot die after you have left.

Fun fact: The creator of Shiki and the author of Another are married irl.

I think Another is a great gateway into horror anime. But one that horror anime fans could have the potential to find boring. It’s basically Anime’s version of Final Destination where basically everyone on screen is going to die. You just have to figure out when and why before the plot just straight up tells you or the viewing experience ends. As it was one of my gateways and still a gateway I recommend. I’d still give it a fairly high rating. But something like Shiki would be rated higher even though it’s much slower and probably double the length.
