THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Kureha is totally a hardcore tsundere. No doubt about it. Nice to see that the show continues with its amazing scenery. The music was ok, but it wasn't as good as the first episode.

My prediction for the rest of the series pretty much goes like this: An enemy weapon (probably some kind of aerial object) will most likely attack the town at some point and 1121's spider tank will repel it just like the legend went in the first episode.

The production quality on this is AMAZING. Down to the way they characters move. Wasn't sure how well this series was going to do based on the first episode, but its looking more promising now. Hopefully they delve into some action latter on. Definitely a good episode.

Was that the same OP from last week? Reminded me of Elfen Lied.

Anywho, while the quality animation continues, this episode was really dull. They did nothing to further the story and had minimal character development. It was mostly about Kureha and Kanata, but even then, their interaction was pretty thin.

The whole episode felt like a filler.

That "Elfen Lied OP" >.> The song was pretty nice though.
I think that there will be an episode for each of the girls in the platoon and then the "real plot" will start. But seriously, five girls in a platoon?

Oh God, please no!

A decent episode but I thought it would be a more exciting seeing it's the second one in continuing with a dull pace.

When am I going to see the girls with guns blazing from an invasion, bloody headshots and bombastic body splattering from grenades? Not only that but operate the Shagohod?! The last episode better be epic.

They're in Spain, but their written language as of now is French, and at the same time they eat with chopsticks.. Right.
I'm not really having such high hopes for this show anymore, since I can only wonder how the plot will progress from here. It'll probably stay pretty simple, with a few 'laughs' here and there, and maybe, maybe, they even shed some more light on the history of the fort and that mysterious legend.

They're not in Spain, dear. ;) They're in Switzerland (since the country is called Helvetia as I recall, and Helvetia = Switzerland). It's just that a spanish city was used as a model.

A bit stupid myself that I completely oversaw that, oh well. It's just that I vaguely remember someone mentioning Spain in the last thread, so I just assumed.. heh.
But why Switzerland of all places? Hm, I think, or rather, I hope, that it's just a coincidence of them naming the country Helvetia in the anime..

EDIT: Wait, if the story indeed takes place in Switzerland, the use French language doesn't seem that out of place anymore..

O~kay, after DL-ed this shizz for 2 days, I finally muster up 'nuff patience to go through it and lesse....

_ Some french soldiers they are....<_< Scared of owl, mice,.... What are they here for, I wonder? Oh~ never mind, I see it now...The purpose of 'em being there is to make a fabulous ROVE ENDO PISSU war where the enemy will be paralyzed by their MOE POWAHHHH... Hmmm, I see, I see *nod*nod*

_ A platoon consisted of 5, I know that this platoon is supposed to suck like Azusa said...but wut, only 5 gals who have trouble to shoot an owl are supposed to guard a fortress like this?!!! Wooooooow~ no wonder Camembert got OWNED by that sandwich attack from those Baumkuchen dudes thus lost both WW(s)

_ Half the ep is wasted on Azusa acting Tsundere...First is about moronic girl getting lost, then this one is about Azusa. I assume the next one is Mio...er, Rio's turn to shoot her Moe~Moe~Kyun?

Real~ nice of one heck of an ep, I guess...

The new op animation was really artistic, I liked it so much. Well, even though the story didn't progress well, I quite enjoyed myself watching it and I hope the calm and light mood will stay afterwards too, however I wouldn't mind a little action placed somewhere...

What's this? Mecha in my moe-shit? Now that's something you don't see everyday.

So here's how I think everything turned out the way it is: some people in the past started World War III with high tech weapons and threw nukes around, thus destroying most of humanity. Humans being persistent rebuild but take a whole step back technology-wise. Since they aren't a lot left, they gather around and there's like this cultural melting-pot that gets started, so that's why the girls live in a Spanish city, in francophone Switzerland and have Japanese names. And since Japan is quite far away, the Japanese were probably the ones that started the war by invading Europe with a secretly developed cyborg-ninja army with funds stolen from hard workin Koreans in the pachinko business. Oh my, this show just spoiled Japan's plan of invasion!

The tank is a mecha weapon of the last war, some people will probably throw a flying Gundam at those poor girls too.

Okay people, I've said the truth, you don't need to watch this anymore.

Now we know how they're going to start the plot later on. That phone is going to ring, the armistice will end, and cutie breaking will begin. Hopefully.

As for the episode, not bad. The artwork and atmosphere were both solid and the moe was kept to acceptable levels. No significant plot yet, but the purpose of these first two episodes seems to be world building and character introduction (which is pretty standard, imo).

Owl is one of my favorite characters in this show.

Episode was good. A lot more mysterious than other moemoekyun shows in a really creepy way. Not bad! (Kureha reaction face after she shot the owl was priceless and disturbing)

OP was like omglolwesawelfenliedlastweeksowedidthistoo. Kalafina song is good.

Number One don't be surprised if there really is someone still hiding in that barraks.

Second they will get that tank put back together before the end of the show.

Thirdly there will be some sort of probing attack by the enemy which the girls will fight off.

Lastly to touch on something that some have been critical of. Five girls stuck in some run down fort in the middle of nowhere. It does actually make sense in a historical context. If you look at many of the second rate European empires and even some of the main ones, towards the end of the empire or in its twilight you see them stripping down the far off unwanted ends of the empire and replacing them with second or third rate troops. These troops are just there to show the flag.

As an example look at the Falkland Islands. There was a grand total of 80 British soldiers in the entire chain. Most of them stayed in and around the capital of Port Stanley, they even kept most of their weapons in the Governors house.

Before the Panama Canal was built the Falklands had been a major British outpost with a larg Navy base and the troops to match. Fast forward past two World Wars and other stuff and you have 80 men showing the flag. Same with these girls. Long war has run the country to the edge, but they are still trying to keep things under control, hence the girls in the fort.

Whomever posted that vid of an owl = WIN!

I'm all for giving each character some time to suss out their relationships and establish themselves in the show, but all sources seem to say that this is gonna be a short series...

This episode seemed like a wasted opportunity to put in some real development for the show.

Seriously though... who knew an owl could do that!? That owl vid in this thread made this whole episode better for me. :D

The setting for this show is some depressing stuff, man. It's a world ravaged by war, where historical records, technology, schools and massive amounts of people have been lost.. Where little girls are enlisted in the army and armed with little weaponry to protect whole towns..

Oh Kanata, if only you lived in present time Japan.. You could've learned music with Yui and friends in a light music club instead of a desolate war torn country.. ;_;

Yeah I figured most names aren't known anymore (if we can believe that this is actually our world...maybe it could also be an alternate reality), scholary and such things seem to have gone down the drain during the actual war...

And like many people already said, I hoped since episode 1, that they would just be a backwater unit put together to show flag...it became pretty clear in episode 1 I think, because Seize is literaly in Nomansland ^^°

So, there was REALLY a ghost, huh? I'd never notice it, though.

I liked this episode. Noel is not our standard dandere [she's far more cute] and Kureha used the typical Tsundere's line: "It's not that I've done it for you, I just happened to [insire something here]".

One of the times I loved was when Rio and Kureha were denying togheter that ghosts didn't exist, so... Rio sent Kureha and Kanata to "investigate". Well, I'm still surprised that Kanata is the only girl there which isn't scared of ghosts.

Why did the fortress turn out to be a school? It's unrealistic and makes the anime a high school anime. Sure hope it doesn't turn out like Kanata dreamt and they start playing instruments in school uniforms.

It was a school in the past, but now it's a fortress. It looked like they used japanese language sometimes ago, but it has been forgotten. It was propably a hint for the plot. At least I hope so.

I can make some guesses as to why Kureha act like that. considering how young she is, she definitely lost her parents and other relatives, which is why she's in the military. She sees Rio and Felicia as parental figures. then in comes Kanata, and it's like when a child gets a sibling, she fears losing parental love to the new girl. but she has a bonding experience with her which allows her to be more open and caring. so, both Kureha and Kanata lost their parents, but they have different ways of dealing with it.

i thought that the mention that music is taught only in the military in this story was interesting.

and i thought the school setting was rather tragic. a destroyed school converted into a military base is never a good thing, nor is it a set up into a high school anime.

They just HAD to throw the breast envy thing in there. I'm getting sick of this sort of thing to be honest. She should be worried about getting taller like her "Sempai", not bustier. You never see any height envy in these shows featuring girls/women/females.
At first I had mixed feelings about the stuff, because even though it was promoting that women should have a complex about bust, there would be "status symbol" types as well, and that there would be more flat chested characters to satisfy the need anime has for more of them.

Now it's just getting annoying. Just give some flat chested characters anime studios and let that be that. And introduce more characters who have a complex over being shorter than their fellow female peers.

Also, funny how nobody is comparing this to Strike Witches. This isn't "K-On goes to war", it's "Strike Witches meets K-On". They made another moe show based upon the theme of war with an occidental nature. With several character types and designs borrowed from both K-On AND Strike Witches. There is a clear Sakamoto and Sanya character. I don't remember those character types existing in K-On.

This is Strike Witches meets K-On minus the ecchi, explicit world war II theme, and the realistic modern Japanese school setting of K-On. But it's still an influence. People learned though Hetalia and Strike Witches that a moe show, with military themes based upon Occident and an Occidentalized Japan as if Europe and Japan is basically the same, is a formula that works.

Something seems to be implied there that this country used to use Chinese characters, but no longer does. I'm curious about all of the culture of this country and the explanation as to where it came from.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.
