I don't know what's happening this season, but they just can't get the pacing right. It has certainly slowed down since last episode, but it still felt rushed. At this point, they are just throwing things at us expecting that we know what they are talking about when they didn't introduce it to us yet.
One example is what happened this episode with the shikigamis. What are they, exactly? They didn't really explained what they were, they just said they could localize a specific person, and is made with biological matter of that person and the blood of another. But what are they? I guess we will never know.
Raph is really cute though, and I'm not complaining its addition to the team, but that was really badly explained.
I was always wondering what has happened with Filo and on why did the characters only care about Raphtalia, when Filo was missing. I know they went with the "oh, she's strong excuse", but I always thought "But if their levels were reseted, isn't she a level 1 now? That makes her super weak and vulnerable". For some reason the characters just blindly believed that she was safe, and moved on.
But guess what, she wasn't safe, and she was actually caught by a maniac that wanted to use her for money, and tortured her to make her do the things he wants. Filo was suffering a lot, and it makes me a bit put off on how Naofumi only "remembered" her when he sensed her nearby, because we all know he was going straight to Raphtalia. I understand he has a close bond with Raphtalia, but he was also really close with Filo, so I think this was just an overlook by the writers. Either way, I liked how angry they made Naofumi about the situation and how supportive he was to Filo, just goes to show how much they mean to each other (well now, because for the last 2 episodes there wasn't a big preocupation on getting Filo back). The question stands, why was Filo the only member of the party to not go to Labyrinth Island? I doubt we will get an answer for that, since Raphtalia wasn't supposed to go there either.
Also, their explanation on why Filo is a small bird now, but can still transform to a human made 0 sense. I think at this point is better for us to just believe in what they say without questioning anything.
Also, are we supposed to know who the Katana vassal holder is? They made such a big deal about it, but why should we be afraid? What did he do? This season they just gave up on explaining anything.
We saw Raphtalia going to a castle (?, something like that), and we are led to believe that she is going to be a slave to the Katana Guy, and that begs the question, why did the other guy send Raphtalia to the Katana guy? They might explain it next episode or so, but with how much they are loving throwing stuff in the air this season, I doubt.
One final complaint: I still don't understand the difference between the Cardinal heroes and the Vassal holders, in the beginning I thought the Vassal holders were just the same thing has the Cardinal heroes, but from another world, however this season is making me question that, since Kizuna was introduced as a Hero, and not a Vassal holder, and also, how many Vassal Holders are there? We have 3 that appeared in season 1, the Book guy (Kyo), Kizuna, the ship one and now the Katana guy, that's 7 already, if they are the same thing, why are there so many heroes in this world? And why are there so many vassal holders that go to the villain route in this world?
I have many questions, and I might admit this one might be due to my incompetence and not remembering or paying enough attention to the anime, but I feel we aren't getting any answers.
Enough with the complaining, this episode finally showed a spark in the dark, and it was rather entertaining, showing the strong bounds of the main Party (Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo), and I feel like this arc is going to be important to remind us how much these 3 have been through and how close they have become due to that. The setting is also quite interesting and Kizuna is a great character. I'm interested to see how Naofumi and Raphtalia are going to deal with the fact that they are far from each other. I think we are going to get some important character development. |
