The age diffrence isn't a problem in general. My problem is just, that gilbert raised her like a daughter while she was a kid. It's a huge diffrence if a girl with 18 met a guy 15 older than her and loving him, or a guy adopting a child just to marry her when she turns 18.
As I said, I dont have a problem with the age gap in general, it's just the fact, that kids are manipulable and he was the only person who treat her like a human being... sure she got feelings for him... but he shouldn't bc that's pretty pedophilic in my personal opinion. No offence or something, just my thoughts.

It's by definition not pedophilic because they're both over 18 but I can see where you're coming from. However, you have to keep in mind that they were apart for several years before this point so Gilbert was absolutely not grooming her. Besides, it's not like they immediately got married. It's likely that the feelings turned truly romantic years after the end of the movie. For me this is totally fine. At least it's not mushoku tensei

Now they are both over 18 yo. But in the moment gilbert confessed (when he dissapeared) violet was just 14. And the fact, that he raised her like a daughter make it worse, imo. Imagine a guy adopts a 10yo Girl, tell her he loves her, when shes 18 and then marry her. That would be a scandal.
But I dont wanna attack u. Its just m opinion and the way I see. But for me, Gilbert is disgusting. Violet is not blame... But as I already said, its just my opinion. If u have not problem with that, its totally finde :)

I didn't really see the romance between them either. In the series and the movie, the only clear relationship they have is almost anything but romantic love. Gilbert keeps mentioning that she's a kid he wants to protect. You don't say that about your romantic partner lol. But anyway, I guess the novel developed their romance more and I wouldn't mind if they're together romantically or not. I heard that they eventually got married and I'm happy for them. Their love for each other actually feels even deeper than romance. Whatever it is, the movie was beautiful and made me cry buckets.

In the anime I never perceived their love as romantic so I was definitely grossed out by the movie. The movie explicitly shows it is romantic. The man literally raised her and made her kill people. It was normal that she would have these feelings but they definitely should not have been mutual...

I like how ambiguous (at least with the anime) the nature of their final reunion is because I think with Gilbert having given her"I love you"... a phrase of many levels and layers... their love ends up being transcendent and universal for the viewers as a result. For me, it doesn't matter what kind of relationship they end up having for the remainder of their days because, ultimately, Violet got the fondest wish of her heart for the rest of her life... to see him again.

All that said, I interpret their life together post-movie as likely romantic at some point. She's an adult now, she's learned the expression and meaning of emotions to a much higher degree, she loves him more than anything or anyone on the planet, and they now share similar losses from war, both in the form of limbs and (until that point) each other. Plus she spent the rest of her life on that island with him. I'd say that's a recipe for life partners...

I think it’s obvious that the intent is that her feelings for him are romantic and vise versa.

I think people also fail to realize in that timeline that women got married young. My grandmother was born in 1950 and was married at 16 and had a kid. Times change. I think Gilbert really does truly love her and Violet truly loves him.

Isn't Violet 14 tho

At the start of the series she says "people say I look like I'm 14". If this is to be believed, she should be 15 at the start of the series or almost that. In the movie she's about 18 (give or take considering we can't know her age for sure so she can be a bit older or younger).

I always knew that they were meant to be romantic. Even if the first season tried to be somewhat ambiguous about it, the way their interactions were written and portrayed on screen made it very obvious (at least to me) that we were supposed to see them romantically.

But I'm not a fan of it. Firstly, the age gap is really eww, and secondly, the fact that he's kinda her adopted father is an even bigger eww.

Also the movie made it so much more obvious that they were romantically interested in each other that it's impossible to even stay wilfully ignorant anymore.

I thought the same and hoped he meant it is as platonic. I really want to read them as a father-daughter-relationship, but obviously the scene is meant to be read as romantic.

At first, it seems like a father and daughter kind of relationship, even Hodgins see Violet as daughter. After the ending of the tv series and when she finally understood "I love you", her blush gave it away that it is all about romantic relationship.

Disappointed, yes, but nothing we can do about it, the story and the anime genre was made in Japan after all where age of consent is lower there which I still think is pretty messed up but whatever.

That is true, in the past, laws are different than today but even then, I am still getting mix feeling about the entire series about romance between the two, other than that, it is definitely an amazing series overall.

I imagine Gilbert finally giving Violet the love she seeks by screwing her brains out after several days of foreplay. It'd be a waste of her beauty not doing so. Who cares about age gaps as long as she's 18+ and consented, not to mention they live in a fictional country. Who knows what kind culture and ethics they have when it comes to marriage & sex. I'm sure it's more lax compared to our self righteous modern standards.

Does anyone else see a romantic relationship between these two after seeing the movie? Because i don't, i only see their relationship as a father and a daughter but my friend sees them getting maried after the movie. Am i the only one who does this?
It's definitely romance and they're gonna have kids.  They're pinky swearing in the bedroom in the last scene before things are about to happen.

Yo cmon guys. The entire point of the entire show is that there are infinite ways to love someone and to express it. Labelling their relationship as romantic or as lovers defeats that point. The love between Violet and Gilbert is too unique and complex to describe, so they don’t and just let you see it for yourself.

At the end of 1st season I thought Violet had moved on so I didn't think much about it
It's a weird relationship
It would've been more romantic if they had shown some more Gilbert related content

I think it was natural result that you could see both falling in love with one another, that said, this movie was very lackluster in that regard, simply put we dont get enough scenes with them together, it was disappointing in that regard.

I didn't see the ending scene with Gilbert/Violet at the shore as romantic. There was too much trauma and too many different emotions at play. It was too chaotic. That considered, the two stayed on the island and gave a promise at the very end of the movie. It's highly likely they'd find time for romance too, after calming down. Bringing age gap as something negative in here is ridiculous IMO. Years passed since the end of the war. Violet is no longer a child. There's nothing wrong in them loving each other.

The age gap between the two is just too great imo, even though I heard they get married in the novel.
18 and 29 is just a no for me, even for anime/fiction 😭

dunno... I saw it from get go being romantic... Violet being unaware of her romantic feelings towards Gilbert... and it being the whole journey of her understanding human emotions and learning the emotion called "love" ... thus when when she finally realized loving Gilbert, finding him, expressing it to him and finally reaching those emotions it was absolutely beautiful... most of the series I simply wanted to hug her and see her smile.. most of series felt like crying back of my throat.

With movie it was like great release with both tears and joy of her finding her love...

They had complex start to their relationship... (at start essentially Gilbert took in Violet as stray cat that he took care of) but no doubt they had romantic attachment by the time they got split up... Gilbert had his own reasons staying away... and Violet was left alone and seeking.. searching for both him and learning about people, herself and emotions.

One of my absolute favorite Anime love stories... loved Violet herself... the extremely dramatic, emotional keeping you on verge of tears story and that ABSOLUTELY stunning visual and audio design.

@MermaidGalaxies In real life, people in their 40s and 30s marry people in their 30s and 20s respectively all the time
Should we make it illegal too ? It's not a bad thing when two mentally healthy individuals are happy to do it.

I understand those who want to force a father-daughter relationship with Violet and Gilbert, but you forget that they were literally battle partners, plus Violet was a killer before she even met Gilbert, she certainly wasn't a child's mind, and seeing Gilbert always protecting her on the battlefield developed affection, meanwhile, one cannot criticize Gilbert for loving her, until he saw her kill dozens of soldiers on the battlefield, so the last thing he saw in her was a child, in the end the two protected each other and lived for each other. And even with all this, Gilbert gave her space to live her life, she met incredible men and women, but she continued to love Gilbert, showing that what she felt was truly unique and true. Anyway, this relationship can be anything but a father-daughter relationship, please don't be stupid.

@Arminken 20s and 30s isn't teenager age .
But the series obviously wasn't set in modern day era, so, age gaps back then were considered normal 🤷‍♂️

@MermaidGalaxies Agree with you. Even till early 20th century, this age gap wasn't abnormal. Older male and younger male was quite the norm.

But broader point is, age gap between two mentally and physically helathy people isn't issue. Minimum marriage age is 16 in majority of world. In Germany, if one of individual is above 16 and other is above 18, you don't need even any guardian's consent for marriage. People in 30s marry into people in 20s all the time.

As for Violet, LNs show that she romantically loves him and wants kids with him. Later they get married.
