Hmm, this episode is like a judgment for Gabimaru. Even though he is sentenced to death, he has a chance to fight for survival.

Interesting to see some of Yuzuriha this episode as well. Episode showed more cruelty in their world with its flashbacks. I really like how the episode captures the emotions of those scenes tbh. Sagiri's past was rough and she still has that no nonsense attitude in the present.

The second episode was also perfectly adapted. So far... there have been no issues with the adaptation and the gore is perfect as well. Bloody and Gory... just as you like it. So many new characters just got introduced who will be going to the island as well and it seems like all who are left are the best of the best. Asaemons will tag along. And, then we have Gabimaru who didn't want to kill anyone but there was no choice. It was awesome. Yuzuriha!!!

Sagiri's little backstory was very nice as well. It was a nice touch to her character. Sagiri slashing those guys was satisfying for my girl. I'm very proud of her. The action was so fricking good as you'd expect from MAPPA. And, that OST is so good. Loved it. Amazing episode, once again.

Well given the kind of profession the whole Asaemon clan is, it’s no wonder to see someone flinching or sweating at the sight of beheading, be it criminals. And more so ever if it’s a woman.. I mean they’re saying it themselves. So yes Sagiri is a normal person in the end, the kind of rarity in this series.

Now then those people with expendable lives are gathered, that is the kind similar to Gabimaru, the officials had them go through a briefing session, about the kind of work they’ve to do on the island and yes about the island itself, which is a one-way trip to hell. You don’t return back, and if in some exceptional case you do, it’ll be with the blooming disease or whatever the name is. But hey, not like they’ve the right to refuse anyways, so you’re either way.

Shogun is messed up in the head, for wanting that elixir of immortality. Nothing good will come in living forever smh. Anyways leaving that aside, these officials played dirty, in the name of reducing the numbers, they outrightly allowed a “last man standing”. Those who will still be standing in the end will be allowed to depart. We got our main cast that way, so good I guess.

Those ten filtered out… these are our temporary residents of the island. And they all love to kill, like just see Gabimaru, he freaking obliterated, god knows how many nobodies. RIP you people, who just went down so that we can get our main cast. Asaemons will accompany them as well, by the way.

A one way trip to hell, that is where the criminals are going to. Welp, this episode was mostly to introduce the main cast who will be going to "Heaven" to find the elixer of life. Which also means we've finally got to see Yuzuriha, one of the best characters. The episode was filled with great action and soundtrack.

For long, the Yamada Asaemon clan has always been the defacto execution policy, as is the case for Sagiri's father Kachiji, and the daughter is looking to be in her father's steps, but with fear with every blade and head beheaded.

The rounding up of condemned criminals (with Gabimaru the Hollow being in the midst), and Sagiri has been noticing him from the day since then. The island Paradise expedition showing the criminals the harsh reality of the side-effects while trying to obtain the Elixir of Immortality, they cannot come out dead or alive, being guarded by Sagiri's people. And since the island can only fit a small number of people, it's the survival of the fittest.

The spectacular sight of irredeemable criminals fighting amongst one another in a free-for-all brawl that eventually they'll be useless, it's strong people that stand out, including Gabimaru himself. But Sagiri underestimated her job from Eizen's POV, from someone who's lived a life of death stranding and of constant bullying, but no matter how much she tries, she just could not avert away from the fear mongering through the blade of her family's reputable execution fate. Gabimaru would object to this madness, but no matter what the Shogun would turn a deaf ear to this, he has no choice but to kill, since he can't afford to die either. And all of this culminates in a rampage that only the Hollow can execute, like a monster, giving Sagiri the step of encouragement that she needed to face her fears.

With that, the remainder of the criminals will become the expedition to Paradise: the 10 capables plus Gabimaru himself, going to Heaven and Hell to earn their freedom.

What awaits them in Shinsenkyo, the island of Paradise?

So they basically got rid of the background characters before going to the Island.
Curious to see more of what the ones that survived are capable of.

The last 5 minutes were good, when Gabimaru went all out. The sakuga there was good, but otherwise, the other parts of the episode didn't really feel all that intriguing, since it felt very edgy and just a gorefest for the sake of it. Sagiri's backstory was alright, and some of the other characters looked interesting, but I'm not sold on this show yet, and I don't know if I will be. At least only 10 people are going to the island, so it won't be a massive "death game" like show, which would have been terrible.

The perfect cut that is precise and painless huh the ultimate goal of any executioner. The death row prisoners sure had quite the rap sheets. Funny thing showing them a certificate that the prisoners couldn't even see. What a way to go though for that sergeant transforming into a half death state. Being assigned guard dogs that would also act as your executioners sure was an interesting method. As was the rather thin veil of getting the prisoners to embark on a free for all as well. But it did provide a nice backdrop to intrduce the main prisoners that would be embarking for the island. Sagiri sure had a tough childhood due to her family trade. Gabimaru's rep really is well earned someone that is widely seen here after his solo rampage.

weak animation again but its still good enough

cool that Gabimaru is not a total pacifist he can kill for the sake of self defense for example necessary evil stuff

interesting that Sagiri have a great fear on killing people but she is a executioner that wants to achieve a painless killing method for the sake of her victims being executed by her

anyway Sagiri and Yuzuriha are sexy hot

Nice to get some backstory on Sagiri as this episode showed her resolve to live up to the expectations placed on her as a Yamada Asaemon executioner. As was touched on a bit by Eizen, those expectations for her are much higher since she's a woman in feudal Japan.

We got more details about this trip to "Paradise," and the criminals trimmed their numbers to only include the characters that actually have a design that stands out lol. Good to see a glimpse of some of the supporting cast that we'll be following in this story. Yuzuriha <333333

Seeing Gabimaru in action was 🔥🔥🔥 him slaughtering  the criminals that were coming for his neck was adapted so well. We've  only gotten through the first 2 chapters so far so I'm interested in seeing how they plan to pace this going forward, especially if we're really only getting a total of 26 episodes 😰
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

Episode was a pretty slow burn one overall until Gabimaru unleashed a bit of what he's capable of, even if he himself would prefer not to kill for his first choice, in a pretty damn brutal and unhinged fashion. Still not 100% sold on the artstyle for this anime but the animation efforts for the action was there in this episode. I'll see how this series goes now that the introduction phase is over and the expedition is on. Was also nice getting more insights behind Sagiri's character and her own mental struggles/burdens behind her role as an executioner.

I'm LOVING that opening, the song is so bad ass. I'll definitely be picking up the manga soon. I like the characters and the action is awesome so far. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a reluctant killing machine like Gabimaru.

A good, secondary introductory episode to our cast ( I think at least). So far, all the characters seem interesting enough to make me want to see more of them, especially the blonde guy and the kunoichi (besides Gabimaru and Sagiri).

I am pleasantly surprised by the lack of censorship for this anime. It's as gore-ish as it needs to be and doesn't fail to impress in that regard.

I loved how this episode made sure to highlight the importance of human life and the weight that comes with taking one. At the same time, however, survival is something that people need to do too so sometimes, things are going to get ugly. Is it ever okay to kill? Well, the moral code for this says no but life circumstances can say otherwise.

I liked Sagiri's backstory however, her characterization bugged me purely because while I like the idea behind her writing so far, I didn't like how once again, she's the female lead that everyone looks down on. And yes, I am very much aware that the action of the show takes place in an era where women didn't even have much of a choice or independence in general, however, I didn't see this kind of treatment towards the other female characters even though they are presented as side characters. Like no one gasped when the Kunoichi there was presented as a serious criminal with skills. That being said, though, I enjoy Sagiri and look forward to seeing more of her and her growth because she did spark my interest.

Can't wait for episode 3~!

Man I ain’t gon lie WSJ was cooking with this one. Definitely one of the best battle shonen set ups I’ve seen in years. The characters look like they have a lot of complexity to them, the premise is unique and I like the moral questions the story poses as well.

Well adapted, the fight scene of Gabimaru was well done, made it quite clear that he is not afraid to kill in the most brutal way if he has to. Im a little disappointed with the design of chobei, he looks a lot more brutal and intimidating in the manga.

Another good episode that only adds to my appreciation for Sagiri and Gabimaru. The way Sagiri chops off their heads so cleanly is like a complete contrast to Gabimaru's brutal and bloody killing spree which was cool to see. Not that they gave him much of a choice in the decision of murder or his methods since they tie his hands up lol
Nice introduction to some of the new characters. The ones catching my eye here is Yuzuriha and Chobe Aza

Episode 1 and episode 2 are 5 stars for me, it's felt so short, it's amazing.

Ooh, we saw the special criminals and pretty sure some of the criminal that are not listed as special in this episode will die first.

They made a real shogun 'Tokugawa' in this anime.. and it is creepy to see the flower blooms at that guy eyes... He is still look 'alive'... It's more scary if it's actually a virus... Luckily it's not contagious....

Now I understand why the ED song visual like that... It's actually Sagiri fear of killing people without a doubt. She is look skilled enough to fight though.

The Asaemon is actually a clan, so they all are actually related... I thought they all are actually siblings... Guess they are just a blood related family clan.

Well, can't wait for the next episode ~~~~

Its always satisfying when the NPCs underestimate the MC and later, are frozen with fear when the MC gets serious.

The shogun must have surely shat his trousers and his mimisters probably accepted death with open arms when they saw Gabimaru ripping people's neck off with his teeth.

They did a really good job depicting the cleanliness of the Yamada Asaemon kills versus the brutality of the convicts. This is definitely a lot gorier than most shonen I've watched, and MAPPA isn't hiding any of it.

This episode was brutal. Just an absolute blood bath. The shogun decided that it was best to reduce the amount of criminals before going to the island. The ship cannot hold all of them.
And what's the best way to reduce numbers? You betcha. A fight to the death. Could've seen this one coming.
During this episode, some of Sagiri's past were shown. Being a woman in the Yamada clan is no easy feat. But she's carrying the executions well. It was so satisfying seeing her decapitate the 3 criminals. That was clean af. Gabimaru's method of killing was brutal almost like a predator. The blood bath resulted in 10 criminals being onboard.
This is going to be a roller coaster of a ride.

Nah it's different you have to wait for that literally kind of close to the ending of the series, they're gonna reveal what that thing is so you have to wait, it's a totally different case they want them to bring back elixir for their own use because they think that they'll become immortal.

The island expedition team has been assembled! Ten of the most ruthless death row criminals are selected to have the honor of going to paradise. In search of the elixir of life somewhere on the island that will give them their pardon. Crazy scene having the larger full group of convicts kill each other to wither down the numbers. These samurai working for the shogun have no qualms letting the criminals eliminate themselves so they don't have to. Leaving their hands tied just made it exactly as that one said, an all out brawl. Gabimaru going berserk and ripping some dudes apart literally was so cool! It looked great animation and had a visceral feel to his movements and killing. Getting to know Sagiri more I liked, seeing her mindset behind being an executioner. Being raised around that environment with her clan she couldn't much help choosing to take lives as a career. Sagiri trying to get past her fear like her father did, to make the perfect single cut to end someone. Having to reservations to the act but after hearing whay Gabimaru said she had that realization. Its not about having no fear its about having the strength to carry the weight of taking a life.
