I recently finished and I personally Believe this to be the best romance shoujo anime. The dynamic between kazehaya and sawako is just so wholesome something I’m glad for is that kazehaya ain’t a typical shoujo male love interest that treats the heroine like trash or has edgy mommy and daddy issues most other shoujo romance do example would be Ao haru ride. I also think the pacing of the show is great not once did I feel bored or felt like it dragged long and all the characters were pretty likable besides to side characters.

For me the best shoujo anime is Fruits Basket. This one is still pretty good though.

I do admit that kimi ni todoke does many things well to be considered a classic, just
I won't be recommending it unless I find someone who likes slow romances... it is best in the slow romance department

personally, I prefer maid sama, fruits basket, and Kamisama kiss since I prefer stuff with some fast relationship development or maybe it's the supernatural stuff in those animes...

It's definitely somewhere in the top 5 or top 10 of best shoujo anime of all time.
#1 is harder to choose because it's very subjectif and I find that our opinion changes as we grow older.
Most of the characters are lovable, and the show is very wholesome. Now that I'm a bit older I find that the ML sadako is a bit annoying, she's way too innocent, and way too helpless (at the start), a bit too passive and there was no real reason for her to ostracized. The main couple is too nice and so unproblematic that's it's a bit boring. However, overall, it is very wholesome.

When I was a teen, I used to adore kaichou wa maid-sama and ituzara na kiss but not so more. It's cute and all, but some behavior is a bit problematic.

Currently, my personal favorite is tonari no kaibutsu-kun. It's one of the few shoujos that aged well for me.
Like most shojos, it's teens growing up, learning about diverse relationships, struggling to make friends, and dealing with love, but I find the characters are much more interesting and fun!
I usually prefer shoujos with some fantasy elements in it like kamisama kiss and fruits basket, so the story keeps staying interesting. But this one managed to stay interesting despite no magical elements, no major life-threatening problems, just some teens growing up.
Compared to some shoujo, the character dynamics and their issues feel more real. It starts as a simple rom com, but it goes deeper. From the first episode, I fell in love with the vibe and tone of the anime. I loved the way it started with the monolog of the ML. After the anime, I finished the manga, and I remember loving it. I think I will rewatch the whole thing and write an essay on why I love it.

Last mention, most good shoujos have an even more amazing manga. For example: Academie Alice , sweet and simple anime
but the ending of the manga , ouhhh things got really intense.
So, I highly suggest anyone continue reading the manga after the anime.

I love Kimi ni Todoke a lot but I personally believe that Lovely Complex is ever so slightly the best romance shojo anime imo.

Personally yes. It was my first shoujo anime and manga and remains my favorite. It’s so wholesome and subversive. I wish it were completed in anime form though.

Yeah your right, my bad 😂 I just thought adultery, grooming kids, pregnancy and several scenes featuring sex and substances aren't suited for little girls. So that's why I thought it was a Josei.

I think it’s pretty overrated with needless drama and a overly selfish male MC. I think it’s ok but there are wayyyy better shojo out there.
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

You’re good, I can totally see why you would think that, I’m so upset the anime never finished properly 😭😭😭

While objectively, I'd say this is the best shojo anime I've ever watched, subjectively, I have a very hard time trying to put it above something like Versailles no Bara, which is one of the other most impactful shojo anime I've watched.

If I was in a scenario where I could either get a physical copy of Versailles no Bara, or Kimi ni Todoke, but not both, I would have to go with the physical copy of Versailles no Bara, simply because that anime and, while flawed in places, will definitely stick with me longer, even though both will stick with me for quite a while. Sawako is cute, but her kill count is too low.

Fruits basket is a better romance shoujo than Kimi no Todoke, and overall best shoujo is Natsume book of friends.

The girlfriend suggested I watch this just because I enjoyed Komi can’t communicate so much, not typically my genre of choice but I enjoyed the characters and story so much it quickly became one of my favourites. Will be interested in exploring this genre more after watching this show.

I recently watched this, although slow I do have to agree that it was a great watch. Not sure how to place it as I haven't watched many anime of this genre, but from this discussion I'll add fruit baskets, and maid to my list. If I see more suggestions, I'll add them to my ever-growing list 🙄.

I remember binging this between a few midnights-morning sessions, this was my most enjoyable Shoujo watch ever, incredible art-style and likable characters. I only wish Sawako and Kazehaya's romance prorgession was a little smoother, however it's the drama & characters that makes this series shine

You should read Skip and Loafer before the adaptation airs, although it doesn't soley rely on romance I still think the characters give off similar vibes

Honestly I struggled to finish this one.

At times it was just too innocent and pure that it was unbearable. It’s frustratingly slow.

It’s a good shoujo and it’s sweet but I’d like to see a bit more heat and sexual tension I guess.

I would say maid-sama is the best shoujo anime.
