In my opinion you should watch the movies (or the memorial version) and 1997 because 1997 has more Informations about the past of guts but you dont get to know how the golden age arc ends. The movies are showing the end of the arc, as far as i know (i didnt read the manga). 2016 is worth to watch for the additional Story we get. I know the Animation, the Sounds and Just everything else in 2016 is disgusting but the Story is good.

The movies or the 97 anime don't cover the beginning or till the end of the Golden age arc. Nor dose the 2016 even cover the first part of the next arc after the Golden age. So if you read the manga you would get so much more of the story.

This and 1997 is the basically the same story of the golden age arc. So if you want to get through golden age in half the time, watch this. If you want a more thorough experience 1997. You don't need to see one to u deratand the other

Neither anime is particularly long anyways

Rather you should skip this, the movie trilogy and just watch the original 90s anime only. It'll save you so much grief.

I disagree. While I prefer the anime from 1997 when it comes to Berserk adaptations, Studio 4°C's anime is a nice way to experience Berserk, especially for modern viewer who might not be that much excited about this franchise, but wants to check it out to see if it is worth to invest time into it. Memorial Edition, despite skipping a lot of content, is fun to watch and has really nice looking visuals.

Good idea would be watching both 1997 anime and Memorial Edition, starting from Memorial Edition, though. But it all depends on one's free time and will to invest it into watching two shows presenting pretty much the same plot (if we are talking about its core).

What might be skipped are the movies. No need to watch them if somebody is not a huge fan of Berserk, especially when Memorial Edition is there. Movies are inferior to Memorial Edition in many ways, anyway.

I very much agree with the above statement.
But to be honest with you, Grifith is made to look like a woman in both the movies and  Memorial Editio, with the puckered lips. In the 1997 anime he looked great. So based on that alone, people should ignore everything, apart from  the 1997 anime. Don't you think?

I say: at the end of a day, it's a matter of one's preference. ;-)

I just finished this TV version. I was just wondering if I need to watch the old 1997 version too or not? my situation right now is short on time. unless it's really worth it.

Yes and no.
The '97 Anime , the Trilogy of Movie and this TV Memorial adapted the same Arc (The Golden Age) , but every adaptation of Berserk have a problem or two.

The '97 Anime skipped some details , and the production quality is really average , even for an Anime of its time.
The Trilogy of Movie and this TV Memorial altered/skipped most of the content of the same Arc , so it's a bad idea to continue from here.
The 2016 & 17 Animes adapted the continuation of the Golden Age Arc , but have a terrible CGI , considered as one of the worst ever made.

As usual , the answer is to read the Manga instead.
You'll have the complete story as the Author wanted you to experience , on top of having a top-notch Art.

Right. So best just read the manga. Man why such masterpiece adapted into anime is really suck? Berserk anime is not reallly that blessing huh? They ruined and destroy berserk anime-verse.
Why don't they just adapt closely to its source material god damn it?
