I have talked to some of my friends who are somewhat into anime and surprisingly they haven't heard nor watched this show but they did watch Chainsawman, Dress Up Darling, and Spy X Family. It did top Summer since Overlord IV, Classroom of the Elite, and especially Devil is a Part Timer didn't exceed expectations. In Japan, they are so obssessed with this show so much that the blu rays outsold Spy X Family and My Dress Up Darling, with some sites having where the fans voted the show the rest of the year. The funny thing is the creators didn't even seem to have planned a sequel in advanced meaning 2024 is like the earliest for a sequel if it happens, and A1 originals never go past 2 cours. Yet here, the members and talk on this show is somewhat minimal. Not to mention fans of this show in the west are way less vocal about this being the show of the year vs other shows like CSM, Bleach, Edgerunners, Kaguya, Spy X Family. Like to hear people's thoughts. |

My guess is marketing and some shows being more prominent in media than others. I’ve seen this show, but I didn’t see a thing about Lycoris on social media aside from MAL. Hype from manga readers is also a large factor. |

???? WTF, Lycoris is one of the most famous animes of the year by far, there are tons of people talking about it almost everywhere (reddit, MAL, Twitter, YouTube...) Your friends probably aren't that much into anime, they might be just casual fans that sees the typical animes (Shingeki, JJK, Chainsaw Man, Kaguya...) |

I enjoyed this show so much. It's far from 10/10, and I have no intention of rewatching it, but it was a nice time killer. Also, my opinion is not valid for this topic because I'm not living in the west (I'm from the Balkans). |

It is probably the optics. Most people probably assume this anime is either a boring SOL or low action comedy. I imagine it will gain even more traction as it is made more accessible to more people over time. It definitely is a force in Japan, probably overshadowing Chainsaw Man even. |

It was quite popular during its season outside Japan as well. Like Bocchi it was the surprise hit of that season. However, Japan had access to the light novels that published shortly after release and which sold like hot cakes. And with them came the accompanying buzz and marketing. So LycoReco had much more staying power in Japan than elsewhere. Also the story of LycoReco is very specifically Japanese - the corruption underlying the facade of a nearly crimefree and non-violent society. |

Because the type of story doesn’t really appeal as much to western audiences maybe? Cute girls doing John wick things didn’t really work for me b/c of how ridiculous it is. And I know many others who have or would agree with that sentiment. The story just doesn’t feel real … nor does it make sense. I can definitively understand the appeal if you can put that aside though. |

Thankfully, this almost died after the advent of KamiJiro and the inability to demonize the supporters of this as well as the supporters of TodoMomo.RobertBobert said: MHA unfortunately got popular from 2014 onwards when w0ke culture was starting to g rampant, and gamergate had an uprising. It doesn't help when those "CGDCT plus action" shows barely have any sexual fanservice that could have lured in some casual audience members. The show only ranked 6th in mal members. Another guess partly why LycoReco ain't talked about much in the West is probably due to a sizeable segment of the vocal fanbase online being actually yuri shippers that moved on to the next prominent show with a lesbian couple.... which happens to have an "iskeai Chisato" starring in a Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess for Winter 2023. icefirestone23 said: One possible reason is that DITF has a self insert male protagonist where the audience can vicariously experience a romance with Zero Two.
