I have talked to some of my friends who are somewhat into anime and surprisingly they haven't heard nor watched this show but they did watch Chainsawman, Dress Up Darling, and Spy X Family.

It did top Summer since Overlord IV, Classroom of the Elite, and especially Devil is a Part Timer didn't exceed expectations.

In Japan, they are so obssessed with this show so much that the blu rays outsold Spy X Family and My Dress Up Darling, with some sites having where the fans voted the show the rest of the year. The funny thing is the creators didn't even seem to have planned a sequel in advanced meaning 2024 is like the earliest for a sequel if it happens, and A1 originals never go past 2 cours.

Yet here, the members and talk on this show is somewhat minimal. Not to mention fans of this show in the west are way less vocal about this being the show of the year vs other shows like CSM, Bleach, Edgerunners, Kaguya, Spy X Family. Like to hear people's thoughts.

My guess is marketing and some shows being more prominent in media than others. I’ve seen this show, but I didn’t see a thing about Lycoris on social media aside from MAL.

Hype from manga readers is also a large factor.

???? WTF, Lycoris is one of the most famous animes of the year by far, there are tons of people talking about it almost everywhere (reddit, MAL, Twitter, YouTube...)

Your friends probably aren't that much into anime, they might be just casual fans that sees the typical animes (Shingeki, JJK, Chainsaw Man, Kaguya...)

Because the west is full of boys who try to prove their masculinity. They won’t watch a show about cute lesbians, because their ego would be crushed.

It depends on who you ask it is popular just not as much as the shows you listed because it doesn’t have as much action or boobs as them to put it as simple as possible. The west is simple

Two girls having any sort of interactions means they're lesbian. Welcome to the current current year.
But due to biases Chisato sharing an indirect kiss with Majima doesn't mean anything.

I enjoyed this show so much. It's far from 10/10, and I have no intention of rewatching it, but it was a nice time killer.

Also, my opinion is not valid for this topic because I'm not living in the west (I'm from the Balkans).

It is probably the optics. Most people probably assume this anime is either a boring SOL or low action comedy. I imagine it will gain even more traction as it is made more accessible to more people over time. It definitely is a force in Japan, probably overshadowing Chainsaw Man even.

It was quite popular during its season outside Japan as well. Like Bocchi it was the surprise hit of that season. However, Japan had access to the light novels that published shortly after release and which sold like hot cakes. And with them came the accompanying buzz and marketing. So LycoReco had much more staying power in Japan than elsewhere. Also the story of LycoReco is very specifically Japanese - the corruption underlying the facade of a nearly crimefree and non-violent society.

Idk what you mean it’s a pretty straight forward story. Almost entirely female secret police force unjustly kills anyone who might make Japan look bad. Guy decides he’s had enough and wants to cause some chaos and expose the force. Girl decides that, even though the force is bad, it’s probably better than causing any unrest. Pretty simple story.

But that's actually more complex, than perverted fat guy committing suicide by jumping in front of a truck and getting reborn with a huge d and getting 10 elves, dragons, demonlords and Lolis to bang.. which is what the west want...

Because the type of story doesn’t really appeal as much to western audiences maybe? Cute girls doing John wick things didn’t really work for me b/c of how ridiculous it is. And I know many others who have or would agree with that sentiment. The story just doesn’t feel real … nor does it make sense.

I can definitively understand the appeal if you can put that aside though.

The show only ranked 6th in mal members. You have to remember this is a new show so the popularity during then is like at its peak. The subreddit has under 20 k members. This show kind of came and went in the west along with lycoris recoil, and people don't talk about them much now. The highest viewed lycoris recoil video by anitube doesn't even have half a million views.

For reference, Darling in the Franxx (also by a1 pictures) was 2nd in popularity when it was airing with 1.5 million members, and it got way way more buzz from anitube, and is still heavily talked even today (not in a positive light though). DitF has over 100K members on the subreddit. It got way more videos talking about it with like millions of views. Almost 10 million views

The insane ChisaTaki shippers like on r/LycorisRecoil pretty much freaked people out. This kind of killed the MHA fandom. Which is why partly Darling in the Franxx is far far more viewed here.

Well, Licorice itself was the bromance show, so the shiping was to be expected. In the case of the MHA, the possessed shippers were indeed a cancer, as they either went completely into their delusional delusions or attacked those who refused to support it. For example, I know a bunch of people who became passionate straight shippers of MHA characters just to take that! such people. It's very similar to Genshin fandom, which has actually taken a lot of it to the point of absurdity, with illustrators being bullied for supporting straight ships or people deliberately pushing straight ships out of dislike for slashers.

MHA unfortunately got popular from 2014 onwards when w0ke culture was starting to g rampant, and gamergate had an uprising. This led to MHA being the perfect bandwagon for the shippers to latch onto.

MHA didn't become toxic because of its size. It became toxic because of the shippers

MHA is not my first shonen show and I've been used to the crazy shippers in all-male franchises for a long time now. But since MHA is extremely popular, it quickly went over the top when mangaka started getting massive attacks on twitter, and the "MomoJiro" phenomenon among female characters, where shippers take "these two girls" of female characters and start pushing the idea that they are lesbians. . Thankfully, this almost died after the advent of KamiJiro and the inability to demonize the supporters of this as well as the supporters of TodoMomo.

Also pretty much due to all female casts and /u/ is why no mainstream media outlet would dare criticize the love live or bang dream shows despite the recent love live shows being extremely subpar and disappointing the fanbase. Even the fans are not enjoying the recent seasons. Love Live Superstar S2 had the worst audience reception to date and that affected sales. If you are talking about ANN, they will shill every love live with 4/5 out of 5 stars despite the stories being mediocre

With the exception of Edgerunners, all those other shows are based on beloved manga.

LycoReco being an anime original with no source material had a far tougher hill to climb.

It didn't help matters when most of the marketing was vague on what the show really was about other than "cute girls working in a cafe".

icefirestone23 said:

Based on my observations of other action shows with female protagonists such as Girls und Panzer and Princess Principal, it seems that the entire "CGDCT plus action" subgenre ain't simply as popular as the next isekai/shonen behemoth outside of Japan. It doesn't help when those "CGDCT plus action" shows barely have any sexual fanservice that could have lured in some casual audience members.

Another guess partly why LycoReco ain't talked about much in the West is probably due to a sizeable segment of the vocal fanbase online being actually yuri shippers that moved on to the next prominent show with a lesbian couple.... which happens to have an "iskeai Chisato" starring in a Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess for Winter 2023.

DitF has over 100K members on the subreddit. It got way more videos talking about it with like millions of views. Almost 10 million views
One possible reason is that DITF has a self insert male protagonist where the audience can vicariously experience a romance with Zero Two. It was in DITF's favor when the romance between Hiro and Zero Two resonated with most viewers of the show.

Not to mention DITF has tons of sexual fanservice and innuendos (at least compared to LycoReco). Plus DITF seems to have a lot of pre-release hype before its first episode dropped.

I guess if LycoReco had an overt romance plus a self insert protagonist with tons of sexual fanservice it might have drawn in more viewers. Who knows?

However, Japan had access to the light novels that published shortly after release and which sold like hot cakes. And with them came the accompanying buzz and marketing. So LycoReco had much more staying power in Japan than elsewhere.
This I agree with. The lack of an official translation of the light novel and manga has probably blunted LycoReco's momentum outside Japan.
