It's not a comedy like the 90s show and is aimed at an older audience but at the same time is not gritty noire police procedural shows and focuses mainly on small and simple cases.

Agreed, even the manga (as far as I've seen on mal) isn't very popular. It is definitely a fun show and will find its niche.

It's a Slice of Life/work life dramedy, basically.

It feels precisely like the kind of show which would actually be a bigger hit as a live action series (probably in the U.S. - I don't know about in Japan as every national audience has its own trends and affinities). But I'm glad it was conceived as an anime (from its manga) as it contributes to having more diversity of plots and ideas in anime. A nice diversion from a lot of more fantasy and action-heavy series recently (well, since ever, but it seems like the ratio is skewing more and more against series willing to try different things which might not have as large of a guaranteed built-in audience lately). It's very grounded and feels humble and respectful of its subject matter.

It has some comedic relief, levity, and banter, but the comedy isn't the type which is so zany and everpresent which completely ignores or overthrows and dominates the plot and tone of the entire rest of the episode; it's well assimilated and utilized. It's a bit like a more Slice of Life, lighthearted, and family friendly version of some hour long (45 minutes with commercials) American legal dramas. The ones which don't spend most of the time on forensic investigations and hardcore tracking of serial killers or examining every detail of grisly crimes, but with more focus on the recurring characters and their personal/private lives. Also sitcoms that traditionally were unafraid to incorporate some drama and tackle some serious topics rather than just skits without continuity or depth.

also, being a boring and ugly show on top of that, surely doesn't help.

So my understanding is that it actually does have a popular live action adaptation, so you're pretty spot on. I'm actually enjoying this way more than I thought. It's a nice change of pace from what we usually get

I saw this show commented on a demon slayer, snk, dress up darling post boy I was lucky. This is really refreshing to watch, finally an anime that shows other perspective and somewhat throwing simple life lessons.

I don't think this show is outstanding as some are making it to be. I would love to see a slice of life or more like life of police officers being told in an anime with less crimes but more of their daily chores. This, however is a pretty badly told, badly executed, more importantly the characters and the cases they handle are just bad.

If its going to be a slice of life with daily chores, I've already seen that multiple times so this is fine.

I'm looking forward how they will present it if there will be a serial killer.

I have no idea how to feel about this show, considering I am in the "ACAB" camp. I know Japanese cops probably don't pull out the guns nearly as often as American cops. Plus, the crime rate in Japan seems to be low. So while Japanese cops are ~probably~ better than American cops, that's like saying a trashcan of shit is better than a landfill of shit. Neither are to be desired.

Overall, Hakozume portrays Japanese cops in a positive, if slightly incompetent light. And considering that the mangaka wrote the manga in order to encourage MORE people to become cops, it clear that this show is some form of copaganda. And I guess female cops are seen as less threatening. And we're dealing with the "Police in a Pod", and not the police that deal with yakuza or drug crimes. So these police seem mostly harmless to most Japanese.

Sometimes, the show misses the mark. In episode 5, Kawai-chan is encouraged to keep the patrol car clean because the car makes people feel safe. This is obviously not the case for a lot of people (maybe homeless people, prostitutes, or foreigners)

Honestly, I can't speak for the police state in Japan. Japan does have an actual Communist Party (even if it's not in power), so maybe the communist viewpoint regarding cops is more popular.

But, for some reason, despite the fact that I have an undying hatred for cops, I'm still watching this show (critically, of course lmaooooo). I guess it's a guilty pleasure for me.

It's a lot better than I expected it to be. The characters all mesh well together even though the plot is pretty simple...for me it is the characters who carry the show. Even the two side detectives, I enjoy seeing. It may be a pretty simple anime but it's very charming and can also have some tense situations. It keeps me laughing and wanting to continue to watch....if not just for Fuji who is by far my favorite character.

I enjoy it a lot and thats probably because it is not an isekai or one of those seemingly endless anime that have long periods when nothing happens. Its a a refreshing change and Sgt Fuji is awesome. (and Kawai just needs one more i....)
May the Uguu be with you.

It's also only on Funimation. Wasn't everything supposed to be on Crunchyroll?
And once again Funimation ruins my experience. My subscription expires in 4 days.
It keeps dropping out of the video every few episodes. How would this make me uncancel?
I am enjoying the anime otherwise.

It's an 5 time award winning Seinen manga with +20 volumes and counting, has a TV live action drama, an anime and has already sold over 4 million manga copies. And also licensed in Australia, North America and Europe. It's apparently doing perfectly fine.

Awards:
1) Kobayashi Manga Awards by Fuji TV ONE in the "Manga Specialty" category.

2) 2018 "Already Drama-ized Destiny Award"

3) 2019 Manga Grand Prix

4) 66th Shogakukan Manga Award for the general public .

Also nominated for the 45th Kodansha General Category manga award.

Yeah, but at least I know I'm in that target audience. I just recently finished Patlabor and You're Under Arrest and I've been itching for another buddy cop anime.
