Hi everyone,

I assume watching the films and other things will help me understand the universe. I haven't watched any of them. Is it crucial for me watch them to understand this series. Is this a sequel or something standalone?

They haven't revealed much of the plot yet but even if it's not required I would still recommend to at least watch the first film. It's an exceptional piece of cinema with one of the most influential settings and soundtracks in history.

From the synopsis:
Black Lotus will take place in 2032, in the aftermath of the Black Out, and will be centered on a female replicant protagonist. It will also include "familiar" characters from the Blade Runner universe.

I’d highly recommend the first film and the previous anime short which take place in 2019 and 2022, respectively, at the very least before seeing this. Of course you can’t go wrong with the second film (2049) and the other two short films, 2036: Nexus Dawn and 2048: Nowhere to Run.

If you decide to watch the original blade runner, watch the Final Cut version.

I recommend you to watch:
Movies:
1- Blade Runner (1982)
2- Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
A short anime:
3- Blade Runner Black Out 2022 (2017)
And then start the anime👍🏻

I don't know but you should definitely watch the two movies because they're cyberpunk/sci-fi classics. Pretty hard to find movies as good as the two Blade Runners

Yes, most definitely. It’ll be worth your time. Regarding Black Lotus, the first episode isn’t great, but it gets better in episode 2.

What would be the point of even considering Black Lotus without already being familiar with Blade Runner? More importantly, what would be the point of not having watched Blade Runner years ago? It's a defining movie of the 20th century that changed the landscape of its genre.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

I'd recommend you don't watch the movies, 2049 though great in many ways is painful in how it tramples on the original with its cartoon baddies and idiotic Adam and Eve subtext. Blade Runner itself is an accidental masterpiece in cinema, but the more it strays from Dick's genius the greater the flaws beneath the veneer.

This show has borrowed the original's aesthetic so those who know can oh and ah at the visual and auditory call backs but it doesn't understand that aesthetic in the least. It's already made a hash of the central philosophical question of the original. It's already given us pretty but idiotic fight scenes. Everything it does will trample on the original so if you don't want to be disappointed complete this first and go to the original afterwards.

It probably wouldn't hurt to watch the two films - the show has generally explained any previous material that is relevant to the plot (like the Black Out and the Wallace buyout of Tyrell).

I haven t watch the movies and still enjoy this anime series. I m still able to understand everything. Apparently there are some references to the movies, but you don t really need them to understand what is going on.
