You should not jump into this one as it is technically the 4th season of Higurashi. You should start with Higurashi no naku koro ni from 2006 and work your way down from there.

This season has some controversy from WTC fans but overall as an anime show it’s amazing and I would highly recommend.

You will understand most of it, but you will be missing stuff and you'll feel incomplete, you won't understand the importance of some characters and events, so you are better watching first at least the 2006 and Kai, if you can you should also chech Rei

Yes. 2020 series assumes you have prior knowledge and does not bother explaining what it is about.
Honestly, advertising it as a reboot up until airing of 2nd episode was a real dick move and lot of people were caught.

I am one of those stupid people that jumped straight to this , so here's what I took from it . First 5-6 episodes I was completely lost . I didn't understand why and what was happening . Very slowly the fog started to clear and I understood the base of this anime . By the end I understood what was all the shit that was happening in the first few episodes. Although I kind of understand the point of the anime I still feel like something is incomplete but if you're like me who doesn't want to bother with the first couple seasons and is ok with feeling a little in the dark about everything I think you can start it from this. Although I would not recommend it if you really want to understand the anime properly.

There was a controversy? I only remember new watchers being salty because they believed it was a remake. That should also be the reason for the low score.

Not necessarily, you can just do some research, that’s what I did and I understand the storyline

They advertised it as a reboot, so no. But there will definitely be a lot you won't understand without that prior knowledge, and the series might feel incomplete at the end because of that.

Plus, it might harm your experience with the original if you start with Gou and go watch the previous seasons later, since you'll have a lot of spoilers already.

Ah don't worry about it, it's mostly from the WTC community but they've always disliked the animes cause they didn't adapt every scene from the 90 hour VN.

But yer my previous post stands as watching from the 06 Anime and to continue on with all other animes of it till you get to Gou.
