First of all, I apologize if I'm posting this on the wrong forum. So, yeah, I must say this is pretty much the best (and most unexpected) anime news I've had in a long time. Probably ever. For those who are unfamiliar with KNK I'll just say it's an epic 32 episodes (each one 45 min on average) OVA that run from 1993 to 2003. So yes, it took JC Staff (the studio) 10 years to make it. That can give you an idea of the quality level and the effort that was put into creating this. The story is set in an alternate WW2 where a Japanese admiral is trying to change Japan's role in the war. It plays out pretty much as a political thriller with a ton of absolutely gorgeous action scenes, all of which are fully handrawn and a joy to watch to any (realistic) 2D animation fan (Think Legend of the Galactic Heroes meets Zipang with the quality level of Patlabor 2 or Jin Roh in the action scenes). I guess the fact that I've watched the series several times Raw with my broken japanese should give you an indication of just how good the action scenes are. So now, after pretty much 20 years we are getting a golden opportunity to watch this masterpiece subbed. So far the first 7 episodes have been done and I'd like to spread the word to anyone who could be interested in checking this out. As I guess I'm not allowed to share any links here, please, feel free to PM me so that you can enjoy KNK. They sure as hell don't make them like they used to and I'm sadly confident that we won't be able to get any military-political thriller of this caliber ever again. |

Is it getting fansubbed or getting translated from official licensing avenues? |

I have read about that a few months ago and I'm pretty hyped. I found out about the show existing about 10 years ago and have been hoping for subs ever since, albeit not very optimistically. It definitely sounds like a premise I would love. I'm still a bit reserved tho, because it starting to get subbed doesn't mean it will be fully subbed and even if it happens it could be years because that's how fansubs often work. I'll keep an eye on the situation and if it ever is completely subbed I will definitely watch it, but I don't want to get my hopes up just yet. It has already been 2,5 months between ep 6 and ep 7 being subbed so I'm bracing for a long wait. But I already waited 10 years so I don't mind having to wait another couple as long as it eventually gets subbed completely. I do not doubt that it looks gorgeous however Although I do wish it was subbed earlier. I'm still interested in it, but my anime hype levels are generally lower than they were 8-10 years ago. Back then I would have probably binged the show in 2 days if it was subbed, now I'm just gonna be slightly excited about it and hope it lives up to the expectations. I've heard someone say that it's a bit revisionist so I'm curious to find out where the plot exactly goes and how Japan is depicted in it. Anyway, I'm surprised someone except me actually knows that this show exists, since it's an old, unsubbed OVA to begin with. KreatorX said: Is it getting fansubbed or getting translated from official licensing avenues? Fansubbing. Licensors probably don't even know it exists, that's how obscure it is in the west. Calling it the "best military epic ever" must mean it's giving LotGH a run for its money then, huh? |

Shame this got buried in a dead sub-forum again. A big 'yay' to counterproductive forum rules preventing certain topics from ever finding an audience. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

Thanks a lot guys for your replies! Well, too bad this got relegated to the series subforum though :( In any case, here's he link for you guys in case you're interested (if it's removed you can just PM me) https://www.patreon.com/kade16/posts Even though it's a patreon page you don't really need to become a patron to get the links (although you're welcome to become one, obviously). As of today 3 new episodes have been posted (one special and episodes 8 and 9) so for now I think is safe to think that the project will be finished. From what I hear, these new episodes shall be posted soon at Nyaa too (albeit with a lower quality). Also, @ cjessop19, I also love LOGH but, to be honest, I would have never watched more than 1 episode if it had been unsubbed (I mean, I love how it looks and all and the storyline and characters are amazing... but the action scenes are somewhat lacking IMHO). KNK on the other hand combines a gripping storyline with absolutely breathtaking action scenes (involving aerial combat, naval combat... you name it) with a level of realism that we hardly see in anime form (outside maybe stuff like Patlabor 2, Jin Roh, Area 88 and few more). Hope you guys like it! |

Hope you guys like it! Thanks for the discussion thread and related updates. I wouldn't have seen this unless I checked on the review page for Konpeki no Kantai in the course of surfing aimlessly online/on MAL as I check back at random to see if there are new reviews on anime I've been interested in periodically. I added this to my PTW over several months ago (believe it was some time early in the current year) and as a WWII otaku since 10 years-old and lover of thrillers, historical war epics, and great period pieces and historical fiction/dramatizations generally, naturally I've been intrigued, but it's been one of several series with reportedly only the Japanese raw version available anywhere online. The last I heard the person involved in the fansubbing was engaged in it in the late winter to early spring months of 2020 and then updated those following (I recall reading this via the KissAnime Disqus comments section) that just like the new anime productions it was going to one of another million things delayed and derailed by the global pandemic, but at the time he assured everyone that he sought to continue it but that it would take more time and with more of a delay (several months perhaps) before the next episode would be subbed and released. |

Thanks a ton for taking the time and energy to fansubbed it. It is quite sometime that I wish to see this alternative timeline of WW2. Also because I read "The man in the high castle" of Philip K Dick which has similar concepts. As of february 2021, I noticed the translation is up to episode 22 of 32. Already 2/3! I think you just made many anime fans quite happy by discovering this unusual anime. Thanks again!!! |

I wish some more episodes of this would end up being subbed in the coming months to bring it either to completion or nearer to it. Then I can finally start this series. I don't want to be in the same position with this one as I presently am with Tanoshii Muumin Ikka, where I'm paused and stalled dozens of episodes in and likely will be for the foreseeable future; possibly years to come. Although that series actually has an English dub. I just dislike the English dub/English dubs in general enough to desire not to continue watching it if that format is the only choice. I'd rather watch it in the original Japanese or even Finnish audio (as I've seen some episodes well done in), given the origin of the source material. |

22 eps subbed atm. Only just finding out about this series since according to Anilist database it's the second longest OVA series only second to LoGH. It being a historical military drama, that my main interest in it. The fact that it managed to secure 32 episodes despite being an OVA series certainly must have meant someone was pushing for this series for a reason. |

I translated the remaining episodes with the help of ai. Its not perfect its like 80% there but if someone is interested im willing to share those files. Edit: i will sent the link in DMs for the download but those are only the sub files video sources need to be sourced externally but can be combined with programms like subtitle edit (which is the programm i used for making the subs) |

I finished watching the whole thing in raw and I can say from a guy who knows Japanese who explained the whole story to me that this thing is the worst of the worst. The series doesn't even deserve to have fansubs because of how bad it is. tho I can understand wanting to subtitle it so that everyone can appreciate how bad it is. It is possibly the worst series I have ever seen, there are many bad anime series, but this one in particular is the worst and has no artistic objective other than to satisfy the desires of Japanese "nationalists". |
