I feel like Reki is just a supporting character, i mean he is important cause
he created Langa's board and he is also helping Langa with lots of tips, but i would like to see him win a race.
He lost agaist Miya and he will lose almost for sure agaist Adam. Reki's character is used only to show the new "antagonist"/opponent's power.
I really hope that he will have a glorious moment also as a main character and not just as a supporter of Langa

Same here. I really hope more of Reki’s character is shown is some really cool scenes and it’s not just all about Langa mainly.

I feel the same. We have seen him only support Langa so far and it would be really cool to see him skate against any other person as well! But I feel like there’s gonna be some drama that they’ll be involved in, after all now that Adam has shown up.

Yeah, but I'm guessing the next few episodes might focus on him, now that he's challenged Adam, or at least I hope so.

I actually liked how he straight up challenged Adam and I'm guessing he's gonna take a win now or later in a revenge match. Gonna be a waste if he becomes a side character tho his design is cool

Now I really doubt whether Reki is the main character ... I mean throughout this episode he only supports Langa and there is no epic screen for him ... even though I expect more for him ...

Reki is just a dude in love with skateboarding. He's not a genius like Langa or anything and he doesn't really care. Yeah sure he wants to win but his main objective is having fun so even if he doesn't win matches like Langa he's still a great protagonist.

He also has that typical "if you insult my friend you're my enemy" shounen protagonist mindset so that's why he challenged Dio at the end. Still haven't watched that episode but, I'm pretty sure you'll be disappointed if you expect an extraordinary performance as if he's Langa.

I dont think you have been watching the show very attentively if you say that. Langa fucks up A LOT. Like, really, a lot. He has talent and great instincts thanks to his years long experience with snowboarding but that's all really. It's like saying I'm a genius bc i performed well when i first tried ice skating but in fact I just got it pretty quick bc i used to roller-skate. Langa still fucks up the most basic stuff and lucks out a lot. He even needs adjustments to his board so he could get an illusion of snowboarding. It's Miya who is a prodigy character here. So you assuming that Langa is suddenly this super amazing and talented dude that can pull off all those tricks and amazing performances while Reki can't, doesn't rly line up with canon. Even this ep, Reki pulled off a move that he only learnt yesterday? a couple days ago? idk what was the time frame. That just proves he picks up tricks fast and is as talented as Langa lol But he is not rly given a chance to show that. Though there would be nothing wrong if Reki was just a dude in love with skateboarding, but the issue is how the story does not treat him like an equal lead at all.

The problem with "protagonist" Reki is that he appears to be a stepping stone for Langa. So far his only role was to teach Langa how to skate, cheer on him from the sidelines and be a punching bag. That honestly could be any supporting character. If this continues there wont even BE TIME for Reki to have his character arc lol And if he has one just bc Langa is not there (if the opening is any foreshadowing) then i dont think the writers are doing a rly good job there.

Well, I was comparing Reki and Langa because they're the two main leads. Langa messes up a lot, but that doesn't mean he isn't a genius. Ever since he started skateboarding Reki was very vocal about his talent, constantly telling how quickly he learns new things compared to Reki himself. And looking at how he invents new moves every time, it's obvious that he's a skateboarding genius. That's what genius means. Miya, on the other hand, is a classic prodigy, so obviously he's on a different level, but he's only a side character. I've never called Langa a prodigy.

Genius and prodigy are two different thing. Here's a copypasta from google to explain:
"A genius is a very intelligent person but breaks away from the traditional ways of thinking. On the other hand, a prodigy is someone who masters a discipline at a very young age. This is the key difference between a genius and prodigy."
See how well the description fits the two?

For Reki's own "character arc", instead of making assumptions, it'd be better to wait for the actual content to be released. What we have seen so far is only 1/3 of the whole story. And as I said, since his whole life's purpose is having fun with skating and making friends along the way, he doesn't need to win races left and right or go through a sob/inspiration story. He doesn't need to be a textbook protagonist. There are other ways to be a good protagonist than going through the usual methods, but as I said, we shall wait and see instead of assuming.

So true :/ it’s kinda pissing me off on how Langa is always the attention fr :/ cmon we all know Langa is cool and talented and all but stop using him as a mere means to boost up Langa :/ this anime becomes too annoying in the end

Its only been 4 episodes, what are we gonna do for the remaining 8? Watch paint dry? I'm hopeful for once that Reki will get his spotlight. If we're to judge by the director's past works (Free! and Banana fish) the two main leads (Haru/Makoto and Ash/Eiji respectively) both get their character development and neither gets left behind or portrayed as an accessorry for the other. Makoto could've easily been the token cute friendly friend on whom Haru depends and Eiji the useless damsel in distress.

I'm siding with the "i have hope for how they'll portray Reki" vibes in this thread

I can see how right now it may seem like Reki isn't getting the main focus because everyone is celebrating Langa and the sport in this show is competitive. But I don't think Langa and Reki are competing with each other. There's a reason why we're all noticing Reki. There's a reason why he's so likable.

He's the heart of the show. He drew Langa out of his quiet angsty zone and gave him a purpose. Not to mention he designed an entire new concept for a custom skateboard that would allow Langa to succeed. I don't think he has to be the best at skateboarding to be protagonist important. He has this whole designing skateboards thing going for him.

Then despite Miya's attitude he pulled him into the group and nudged him a lot into this (hopefully lasting) friendship

He's the heart because he's there to keep the spirits up and remind everyone that skateboarding is more than just this twisted sport that Cherry Blossom, Joe, and Adam have created? or something. He's the grounded element that he reminds them that skateboarding is something that's supposed to be fun, full of friendship and hard effort despite how hard it might be sometimes.

Which is exactly what i'm guessing Cherry Blossom, Joe, and Adam didn't have in the origins of this story and I'm hoping they show more of that to explain why this new group of friends or duo is going to be good for the sport. This comparison wouldn't exist without Reki being how he is.

Finally, I think it's cool that the Reki loves skateboarding with his friends so much that he can be happy for his friend who brings something new to the sport with his snowboarding background and creativity. The crowd around them may be hyped for his success because he's that good but the fact that he can have friends who are happy for him too - an opposite to Miya's experience, which might just give him the opposite experience compared to Miya's past. I think it'll keep Langa close to his friends in the end - instead of stepping over them to get ahead because they've rejected him.

Maybe I'm too optimistic but I don't think Langa is overshadowing Reki. I think they're this awesome Duo (hopefully trio +) and they're both great in their own way. This probably sounds really corny haha sorry for writing so much. I agree that I don't fully know what will happen and there's 8 episodes left.

reki is sacrificial character I've watched many anime's with these kinda mc's and i like them more than the "talented" mc coz they're hard workers who've refined there skills and i these kinda animes I don't think reki's gonna get some moments tho i hope so coz I'm so not interested in langa rn.

After watching latest episode it's almost clear that Reki for now is supporting character and his main role is to be langa's friend and someone that helps him shine. Too bad that they make him do that by him losing EVERY TIME.
I don't know how can anyone one enjoy this series if your fav character is Reki, not Langa (what was director of this anime thinking?). What was purpose of making him main? In 5th episode all he does is just worrying constantly for Langa and then beng amazed by him. Oh and then worrying again. I get that we still have half episodes left, but it doesnt change the fact that they made him almost a loser. We were supposed to get two main characters, but in the end we got overhyped main with his supporting friend. What a waste of character. Even if Reki gets his own arc I bet it will probably be revolving around Langa anyway.

This show is making me hate Langa more and more. The thing that annoys me the most is how they keep showing Reki and Langa as two peas in a pod but when it comes to skill, Reki is and will never be better than a guy who just picked up skating. I stopped buying that bullshit of "snowboarding since he was 2" after today's episode. He's already better than Joe and Cherry at this point.

They always show Reki skating, but right after... Langa does an even better job than him. To add salt to the wound, whatever Reki couldn't pull off, Langa somehow manages to do it and pulls through. This pattern is getting tiring and it's just no fun watching Langa skate anymore.

Seriously, what was the point of making Reki the poster boy for the anime if he's never going to skate most of the time?

They should update their roster on the main website:
Main Characters: Langa and Adam
Side Characters: Reki, Joe, Cherry, Miya, and Shadow

I feel the same. After watching 3 episodes, I find it similar to Yuri on Ice, Reki is a coach, like Victor, but less professional, and more devoted to Langa's progress.
Ryuk is somewhat relatable

I agree with everyone else. Now that the anime has ended I still feel like Reki hasn't been handed the spotlight enough. Especially mid-anime when he made Langa's board, it felt as if they were pushing this mechanic support character role on him. Which for Reki with his clear shounen protagonist personality and design, is not a good choice. I still love the anime intensely but I really want Reki and his skill as a skater, not a mechanic but as a skater to be appreciated. If this was a manga or webtoon, I would've expected him to disappear for a few years and come back an OP beast, and while the chances are slim, I hope something like that happens to him.

His skills as a skater was appreciated by Langa. Back in episode 10, he was going to praise Reki for the race with Adam, but then he was interrupted. It is important that Langa values Reki not only as a skater or mechanic, but as a person.
I hope they will show us what Reki is capable of in the sequel. We are waiting for August 8 and details about the new project.
