Akagi declared ron on a tile that still hadn’t been seen. Now, that is a cool line! It wasn’t raw luck he was going for either, Akagi noticed what Hiroyuki did with the forceful discard of Harada's 5-sou earlier, but he went much further with it. Harada must have known he wouldn’t have won going that path. “I can’t help but like risky gambles like this one, it’s in my nature” was a nice touch. And thus he ordered Harada to open the mahjong box. Harada knew that the 5-sou should have been there and he let Akagi survive before seeing it, yet ultimately, the order was misheard, Harada’s big mouth saved Akagi.

Hiroyuki praised his luck and was grateful that he has survived but Akagi looked dejected, like Mike Ross losing a match as a character he didn’t even play, pardon my street fighter reference. Akagi did the shocking, rather than losing by another persons hand, he refused to deny the game, he respected it even when he had no obligation to whatsoever. He passed the remainder of the east west battle off to Ten, setting up the final showdown. I have viewed Ten and Harada as pragmatists so far, Harada willing to do whatever it takes to win, bribing opponents, a fear of him hurting east between the qualifier and the showdown as featured with Ogami, and Ten having always given me the vibe that he’s in this for others, not the game itself and not the material reward. If this is correct then Akagi may represent a total, overwhelming dedication to the game for the sake of it. He wins on his and/or the game’s terms and no one else’s, even if it means holding himself accountable to loss when no one else would think of such a thing, not even his worst enemy.

I was confused on why Harada agreed to check the tiles for Akagi if he knew that Akagi’s winning tile was there. However, I think it came from a sense of necessity. That if Harada forced Hiroyuki into a game with an exceeding amount of haku and chose to win in that setting, that Akagi could force his hand. Akagi attempted to defeat Harada in his own game. A game which shouldn't have lost west anything and only saved east.

Damn Akagi, why are you so stubborn? Well I guess I kind of get it, he thinks in ways us mortals do not understand lol.

It's interesting that they are playing with a set that has eight haku, the two sets I have have the "Chinese" haku or whatever it is, that looks different from the completely empty haku usually seen in Riichi Mahjong, and then only 2 bonus "empty" tiles (which I guess could be haku, but why only two of them?).

I did not expect Akagi to not make it to the final showdown, but then again, after thinking about it, it only makes sense that Hiroyuki is the one advancing. After all he is pretty much the protagonist besides Ten.
