----------------------------------------
This is like one of the hardest times I’ve laughed at a Fukumoto chapter. We started with a futile Ten, facing this goofy idea of Fukumoto luck once more as being a genuine skill, a mahjong player's real ability, their intuition or charisma. And there’s some truth to that, if you get a garbage hand then in a sense you are garbage so you best not get that garbage hand. As goofy as this idea is and as alluring as it is, Ten was basically accepting defeat. He felt like a total loser to me at first, like there was no way to go forward and he was completely blaming himself. Yet, I also got it, this was a really bad situation and it showed how much Ten carries on his back.

And then as Ten feels he couldn’t bring anyone together, Akagi stumbles in. He casually says he came from Hawaii and asks to join which prompts the others to start chanting and cheering destroying the gloom and doom that was overshadowing the scene moments before. Then he shows just how childish he can be by having everyone wait outside of the room silently and calling them in one by one to surprise the east boys over and over again. First was Kanamitsu and Washio who stated they were too in Hawaii and Kanamitsu even gives a comedic line about women which we wouldn’t expect from his priesthood. Next, with a smug line about a strange kid and a preemptive acceptance, Hiroyuki walks in with his patented smug face ultimately telling Ten that he learned to cheat! But that’s not all, Akagi then calls in Ginji of all people who states he changed his way which isn’t all that surprising. When I first heard “old warriors don't die, they just disappear”, I thought it was somewhat righteous and definitely powerful but also the antithesis of most of Fukumoto’s philosophy. He’s rather quickly adopted a philosophy more in line with nearly every Fukumoto work I’ve read, that is to go out fighting. I presume a little pep talk from Akagi was all he needed and I liked the touch that he was still lacking confidence in the choice.

I presume that in reality Akagi, Washio, and Kanamitsu were in Hawaii, we got another golfing analogy after the one from Ginji’s game and Kanamitsu mentioned the women there. However, Hiroyuki being there to stumble into Akagi doesn’t make any sense so I think it was clearly a lie to trick Ten into agreeing. You could see it in Akagi’s smug face when he brought it up to begin with.

I suppose a good driving force for these old warriors would be preserving their style of mahjong and enjoying the thrill that we can see Akagi and Hiroyuki both seek. I also wanted to say that I dig Kanamitsu and Washio’s designs, they come off as pretty unique in the world of Fukumoto.

Haha this chapter really was awesome! One would think, what even was the point of them trying to recruit them, if they just waltz in by themselves anyway? But I think it is perfect this way. Seeing Akagi himself was already a great reveal, but then he just casually brings with him everyone else too, lol

I am excited to see what Hiroyuki can bring to the table this time around, and whether we get to see everyone else's play style, too! And maybe some of that patented "demonic luck" of Akagi?
