I haven’t let out a good cry for awhile. Soga hit me hard and so did Ginji and Kanamitsu, but Harada and Hiroyuki just made me a little teary eyed in all their philosophical beauty. Ten and Akagi’s conversation has hit me again.

Ten is such a wonderful protagonist, he is definitely one of my favorites when it comes to Fukumoto’s works. He’s unique, and goofy, but serious and with a huge heart. As cool as he is, he’s humble and quiet and lowkey. He’s a pretty diehard pragmatist at times and he has guts. He’s a good guy hero but he feels human to me and in a way that is rare. He made it clear here in this chapter what a key difference between him and Akagi is, and that’s who they live for. Akagi has been an interesting enigma partially because he lives for himself, whereas empathy and connection is key in many Fukumoto characters, it could be argued to not be a focus in Akagi’s attributes. While not entirely true, evident from his gratefulness of his friends, he liked independence, it was probably freeing even if it held some regrets, him referring to this as him dying lonely as he is reaping what he has sown.

I just knew Ten would invite him to join his house and his two wives. I just knew he would. Shockingly this well put together, quiet and strong hero is one of the most hurt. And I think it’s largely because he lives to help his friends, being introduced as the strength of his household, playing Santa, helping people who may be using him, even showing empathy to the people he cheats and having a code of honor to go along with that. So it's evident that he’d try everything and as it’s impossibility becomes more and more clear he’d show us the heart of his, he’d show us why he wants to help others so much. And this isn’t just anyone, this is a friend, he peered into and spotted a weak point, his self-isolation. Ten looked so desperate as he pleaded.

“Even if we’re not tied together by blood, it’s a family! Let’s do it!”, “I don’t want to let you die! I… I.. I’m saying live, for my sake!”

Even if Ten fails in this, even if Akagi refuses to indulge this offer, he looked happy, happy that in his last moments he could see how much his friends cared about him. At the end, it almost felt like, with his stern expression and quick decision, that he needed to activate the machine to respond to those emotions or something.
