Mm, that pudding. I gotta say, the English themes from this episode was pretty fascinating.

Fairly interesting episode with connection to that jewelry too, which imo is rather unique in design compared to the others in this series.

No, it takes place after episode 10. You can tell by how much softer Richard has become.

The anime skipped all the way to the end of volume 5 so it does feel a little out of place but it’s a very nice episode.

One thing that the anime cut is that Homura finally got married and the person he married is Chieko’s daughter

I find it hard to believe that Segi just ran into Richard's tutor. Though from reading other comment it look like this is anime adaptation's fault for skipping so many parts that make the story feel disconnected.

I only watch Les Mis as musical so I also miss a lot of things from novel.

Seigi's dad look like a bad person. But this anime teach me that 'don't judge too early'.

It seems a lot of people misunderstood that scene. They weren’t saying goodbye to each other, they were saying they don’t need to give the sapphires back to each other until the last time they meet, which could be decades from now. It was a promise to stay together, not a goodbye.

Homura is the guy who tried to marry Mami from the ruby case and Tanimoto. He was so unlucky with marriage but he finally found his happiness.

Don’t you know in the anime world, there is no such thing as coincidence?! Just kidding. Actually, in the novels it was also a coincidence, but in a different way - they changed it because as someone else mentioned, they didn’t adapt Chieko’s daughter in this episode.

Before I begin this episode’s discussion, I’ll like to do some promo for the official media! No, this post isn’t sponsored by JR - I sure wish, though!

- it’s been out for some time, but I forgot to mention earlier, so I’ll do it now: official goods you get when you buy the anime BD/DVD volume 1! Dang, I really like that art for Richard for the IC sticker...

- BD/DVD volume 2 cover is out! Featuring a beautiful Seigi! Bless Utako-sensei~

- seems like you can preorder the first volume of the manga too! link leads to the bonus tokuten you can get for preordering! First volume drops end of this month, and should cover the first 2 episodes in full, since it adapts the novel content. That’s to say, y’all will see Mami’s girlfriend~

I know a lot of people were like “doesn’t last episode feel like the ending? What are they going to adapt for the remaining 2 episodes?” Well, here’s your answer! Did nobody notice we never got the answer to why there’s “de Vulpian” in Richard’s name...? This episode is the answer. Turns out the person Seigi just happens to meet is Chieko, the Japanese tutor Richard and Jeffrey once had. But the beef happened between Chieko and Catherine, and Chieko feels too guilty over her sudden disappearance to meet Richard, the child she had promised to nurse back to health if he ever fell sick.

Speaking of Catherine, calling her by name rather than Maman... Why is this series like this, haha. (Remember, Seigi does that too.) And I wonder if she was being truthful when she just wanted Richard to stay behind when she did that theft trick? I don’t doubt that she didn’t want to reconcile with Richard’s papa, but methinks that perhaps part of her motivation was wanting to separate Richard and Chieko because the two of them were so close.

But Richard didn’t blame Chieko! And it’s nice to see them making up, and the hug. The hug!!! That was so soft. Also, shy Richard was a blessing (and I love Sakurai’s voice acting here!!!). Actually, this whole episode was a blessing - Richard is showing more expressions since episode 10! This happened in the novels too!

And ooh, that cliffhanger at the end... I hope everyone is ready for the big finale. Ahahaha~ and here you guys thought this anime didn’t have anything else to tell, huh?

Other thoughts:
> Chieko: don’t tell Richard you met me
> Seigi: makes pudding the same way Chieko did

Way to go, Seigi! facepalms

- when I saw that leg crossing (please someone gif this, I need it), I was like “that’s where the budget went this week, isn’t it”... That was such a long lingering shot on his legs, it’s pure fanservice. Not like I’m complaining, though!

- MORE BABIES!!! Love the voice acting in the flashback sequence, by the way.

- isn’t Richard too young for Les Miserables? Though it’s probably a good idea to teach him that, considering the book does cover overthrowing the royalty and nobility, after all.

- okay, honestly speaking, Richard’s mother wasn’t a very nice person, but heck, she’s extremely beautiful. That’s definitely where the guy got his looks.

- a smile I want to protect

I didn’t read the novels for this episode, so not much to share in terms for spoilers this week, just a few points. This episode adapts the peridot case in volume 5.

What a sweep episode. So nice to see more of Richard's backstory with his teacher. I hope the final episode is done as well if not better.

I didn't expect the governess who used to make pudding to Richard and Jeffrey, and who also taught them Japanese, to become a full-fledged character like this, but I loved it. We got to know more about Richard's childhood and his mother after all. At first I judged his mother badly. I thought she framed Chieko as a thief to get rid of her out of jealousy or something for real, but they were on that together from the start. I don't know how honest Richard's mother was being when she said that she believed that staying there would be the best for Richard. Maybe she just wanted an excuse to break up definitely with his father or something. But the fact remains that her, his father, and Chieko left Richard behind. Chieko seemed to really care about the kids, especially about him, so I don't know why she wanted to "escape" from there. I guess she had a reason to go back to Japan, or maybe she never planned on staying there forever, and it's too bad that she didn't say goodbye properly to Richard, but I'm glad that he doesn't resent her for it. Good thing Seigi met her by chance and could give closure to both Richard and Chieko too. And now that that man appeared we will get to know why Seigi said what he said to that kid they had as a customer in one of first few episodes.

Volume 5 of the novel with the usual heavy changes here and there (find them elsewhere of others' opinions).

Seigi meeting Richard's former teacher Chieko might have been just a hard-pass when it comes to coincidence, but the amount of similarities shared to her just makes her shudder. Not to mention the various loopholes a.k.a his "de Vulpian" family name disguise.

The backstory of Richard continues when his family is in disarray, but things with Chieko just didn't took off well in the sight of his own family, albeit in helping Richard grow his young days was a blessing in disguise. Surely Richard's guardian of a father may have helped Chieko, but for his mother Catherine, the "spare the rod and spoil the child" mentality ended up being what's worse in reconciliating with her husband, that saw her in a different light and Chieko frantically distancing her relations with the entire Ashcroft family.

And finally after so long, Richard got to meet her, and reconcile with her past with a hug.

But that cliffhanger...I wasn't prepared for it and came out of nowhere. The finale with Seigi and his family perhaps?

m8 another broken marriage???? lol this show is just taking the piss now. What is that, the 5th one now? Also, I might have missed it but why does Richard's mom not want to get back in the first place?

Now that there's only just one episode left, I am finally feeling the fear of no longer being able to watch this anime. I am pretty sure this won't get a second season, and that is just too sad. I wanna see Richard and Seigi marry!!

For a moment, I was worried that the woman was Richard's ex girlfriend. Their actual relationship, however, was kind of sweet.

Seigi's dad is back. Was he ever gone? I don't remember.

So for this episode, we meet Richard's childhood tutor and visit their past together. What a lovely episode. I didn't like Richard's actress mother at first because of the way she acted, but now I guess she's ok. I wonder if Richard ever got to become closer to his mother after that.

Also the last episode will be about Seigi and his dad?? Cliffhanger time. I forgot what happened between Seigi and his father, can anyone remind me about what happened (if they mentioned it in the previous episodes)?

Woah, that's a bunch of stuff cut out. I would have loved to see what happened between Homura and Chieko's daughter. Maybe we can have an OVA about it?

So basically his backstory was sort of the reversal of Seigi's.

This anime seems to follow this pattern of one of its best episodes, followed by one of its worts, then some meh episodes in between just to keep things happening, rinse and repeat.

I appreciate its mature enough presentation but it was not exactly to my likings.

The reason for his name kinda defied my expectations, really thought Richard like pokemon to add "de Vulpian" to his name...
To be honest, Seigi basically gave away he met her by changing the damn recipe of the pudding otherwise Richard probably wouldn't know

Best episode so far in my opinion, Chieko's story really had some unexpected side to it
