| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- So at this point, Dr. Slump had already started being published and Toriyama feels like a better mangaka. This chapter was a pretty big step forward from the earlier one-shots. Pola & Roid has a little more plot than the previous chapters in this collection. Toriyama is great at writing adventures and his characters going on journeys together so it's fun to see an early version of that. The main bad guys are fun as well. Oh, and it turned out to be the origin of humans as well. |
| Pola & Roid. Massive step-up from anything previously. When I only liked one of three prior, that probably doesn't say much but I really enjoyed my time here. I think the fourth wall breaks were better handled here too. Didn't quite get the need for the Act set-up, but Act 15's title being "Three pages left" was pretty solid. And while my experience with Dr. Slump is mostly relegated to the crossovers with Dragon Ball, I thought having Pola cosplay as Arale was a nice gag. But the whole concept of Roid going on a planet full of incredible weak beings had a lot of good gags tied to it, I really love the bit with the pencil, and the adventure was fun for how quick it was. I did enjoy Pola's random married talk contrasted with her childishness, got an audible laugh out of "Sweetie, I gotta go peepee" and Roid's reaction. Really liked their robot, Angel. His biting comments were always pretty amusing. The absolute best part that was Pata-Pata Dragon. I loved him formally introducing himself to them as the villain, trying to make sure to throw roar and there, and being sensitive over it. "Grooar, and such". |
