You don't need to watch the previous SAOs to watch this, you'll miss cameos, but I doubt they are important.

Why not just watch it from the beginning. All SAO seasons were masterpiece (in my opinion), and not many anime out their that can compete with it.

To answer your question, I say that Alternative: Gun Gale Online can be watched without watching previous SAO. This one has new players/characters. There some scenes were the character are talking about the original SAO game, but it it not big deal if you don't know about that.

Listen to me. If you want to keep watching this season, do not watch the previous ones. This season is way worse than the others and watching them will only make you hate what they did to this season.
Now, if you can't wait, I guess you should prepare to see a masterpiece (season 1) and 2 good seasons just to realize that what you're watching in this spin-off is a complete waste of your time.

So the simple answer is NO, it's not necessary the other seasons to watch this, it's imperative for you to not watch them!

You don't need to but I think you should at least watch the first season if you want to get some of the little references they make from the previous seasons. I'm enjoying this series more than the original right now, so its worth a shot.

This series is miles better than the original SAO franchise. I'm telling you this is a former SAO fan, that watching it should only be for educational purposes or purest of popcorn material, purely because the original series lacks depth in every conceivable aspect and at many times deceives its audience for the sake of cheap twists-- most notably how infamous it's for for giving exposition to the viewer only to break it a few scenes later. It's not worth it to watch the orginal.

If you want to watch SAO Alternative, you may do so without seeing the original. It basically spits in the face of everything SAO tried to do but failed and the two have literally nothing in common but their name.

Lol what? No matter how you look at it, SAO Alternative is way better than SAO. Though the two are barely related, I will compare them since they both carry the name of the franchise. Whereas the original SAO has some nice visuals and music, SAO Alternative has way better character presentation, a better story, more relatable characters (Actual normal human people with normal human problems, unlike edgelord sword-master superhacker godmode Kirito whose main problem is not being able to hold on to his sandwiches), WAY better attention to how guns work and actual involvement of strategies (it's a VRMMO after all, realistically you won't just grab a sword, run into a deathmatch tournament, intercept some bullets with a sword and win).
So if you mean "what they did to this season" as "fixed a LOT of flaws which the original series had", then I completely agree, otherwise, pardon you.

Also, bit of a correction; SAO Alternative is a (very loosely similar) spin-off, not a "new season".

I personally liked SAO, but I do have to admit that the OG SAO was just a no-brainer. To enjoy it, you really have to just accept all of its horrible flaws and put them besides you. With this show, that's not necessary cause due to it being written by a different author, it does not have those same blatant edgy teen power-fantasy flaws the OG show did.
(I mean, making someone like Sinon who had serious stuff like PTSD going on the main char would also satisfy me and improve SAO a lot for me, but I think that Kirito pretty much ruined the relatability of the normal SAO)

As a matter of fact I advise you see the original series instead, as it is not AS devoid of meaning and art AS this one is. It might actually provide some insight for you. And it follows the good story guidelines. Also, a neat sci-fi which shaped the world envisioned through VR experience for entertainment looooong ago.

Let me quote myself from a similar thread.

You might want to see SAO season 2 first arc. It's set in Gun Gale Online VRMMO, which is the setting for this anime.
But you don't really need to do so. Let me explain all you need to know in a few words:
1) GGO is a VRMMO, a game that fully immerses your senses in a virtual world. They're awesome, but the first games had issues that killed quite a number of people for real. By the time this story is set, these issues should have been worked out.
2) GGO has a post-apocalyptic setting, with ruins, future-tech devices like lasers and force fields, monsters and stuff. Kind of like Fallout, but with humans returning in spaceships instead of crawling out of vaults. The details don't matter - people are just here to shoot a lot.
3) GGO is a MMORPG - it has stats, levels, builds, dungeons, rare drops, farming rare drops in dungeons, player killing and things like that.
4) GGO has tournaments, where people can show off their builds, personal ability and player killing. This anime is all about one such tournament, "Squad Jam".
5) GGO has game money to real money conversion, kind of like Eve Online, which potentially allows people to make money playing it. This can lead to more player skill and more drama than in an ordinary MMORPG.
It also means GGO the game is a dubious place not unlike an online casino, but most players don't really care.
