This year's 20th issue of Be-Love magazine has announced that a spin-off series for Yuki Suetsugu's josei manga Chihayafuru will begin its serialization on October 13.

The spin-off manga will be about junior high school time of Chihaya, Taichi, and Arata, which is based on Chihayafuru: Chuugakusei-hen (Chihayafuru Middle School Arc) novel that was written by Yui Tokiumi. She will also be involved in writing the story for this spin-off manga series. Oto Tokita will be illustrating and Suetsugi is credited for the original plan.

Chihayafuru began its serialization in 2007 and currently has 35 compiled volumes in print, with the latest volume released on August 10. The original manga has received two anime adaptations by Madhouse between 2011 to 2013 for two cours each, and two live-action movies adaptation in March and April last year, with a sequel movie in production for 2018. The Chuugakusei-hen novel was published between September 2012 to December 2013, with a total of four compiled volumes. A two-volume novel series for the live-action movie was also released on March 11, 2016.

Both Arata and Chihaya continued with their Karuta in middle school. So, yes. Karuta will be there. And Taichi played football in middle school if I recall correctly. Another character to look forward to in the spin-off is probably the awesome Harada-sensei. He is the one who transformed Chihaya into the offensive Karuta player that she is now.

I cannot say I am too surprised. I mean no disrespect to other manga in Be-Love, but Be-Love has maintained the current circulation numbers in recent times because of Chihayafuru. Just like YOU has maintained through DameKoi (and now DameKoi R).

Btw, Chihayafuru is a Josei manga.

This is based on the already completed Chihayafuru middle school light novels They show why Chihaya stopped playing karuta and ran track out of loneliness. They show Taichi playing in a karuta class at his middle school. He also had a girl friend in the novels. Arata spent much of time taking care of his grandfather with Yuu which is why he did not make Class A until the day his grandfather had his last stroke
