UC has a bunch.

SEED had quite a few.

Wing had some.

00 had some too I believe.

The problem I have is with these is the "Gundam" in the story. If there was no Gundam in these hidden war stories, it wouldn't be so bad.

The reason being that in the main stories, the Gundam Mobile Suits are god like on the battlefield. They're rare. When they first appear, everyone is talking about them and are wary when they run into one.

These hidden war stories always have prototype Gundams left and right. You'd think someone would've mentioned them in the main stories "Hey, there's another 10 Gundams out there! We should be careful".

It's kinda like how Star Wars side stories always find a way to shoehorn Jedi into them even though after the Empire took over the Jedi were supposed to be completely wiped out. It does get annoying after a while and tiptoes the line of retcon.

It would be interesting to see a Gundam series that doesn't feature any overpowered special mechs. Just two sides locked in battle with no advantages over each other besides wit and determination. Kind of like how the early episodes of 8th MS Team were but holding to that premise throughout the entire series. Would be fun to see both sides wrestle with that.

For the UC, most of the side stories are no invasive to the main story. With MSG, 0080 War in the Pocket and 08th MS Team are great companion pieces to the main series.

0080 taking place far away from where White Base was at the time (Solomon, Texas and A Baoa Qu), one week before the war ends. In the 3rd episode of 0080, while Chris is testing the Alex, the engineers say it's going to "some newtype on White Base".

08th MS takes place primarily in the jungles of Asia. 08th MS 1st episode taking place during MSG's 12th (Girhen's Sieg Zeon speech) and 08th MS's 7th episode taking place after MSG's 24th (after Operation Odessa and M'Quve heads to space).

Things like IGLOO and Thunderbolt however are different. They don't bolster the OYW story like 0080 and 08th do. IGLOO largely derivative and Thunderbolt is just mech porn.

It doesn't really retcon anything. The world is much bigger than Amuro and his little his group. There are many battles being fought on several fronts all over the world.

Like the above posted said, think of Gundam like the Expanded Universe of Star Wars. There's always a way to fit in side stories.
