Many death flags were created that day. But I still didn't think he would die like that. I don't know...seems a bit ambiguous on whether or not he actually died. I kinda hold some hope, I mean, look at Iron-Blooded Orphans.

I really want to see that White Knight get what's coming though.

Now I'm confused as to which pairing you're talking about, since they pretty much stated that Kaname was in love with Arad.

Also Messer died because Keith got lucky when another ship sacrificed himself and ended up hiding him in the smokescreen of that downed fighter for him to take that last shot. What amateur mistake are you talking about? Messer actually thought he'd downed Keith, so Keith had that element of surprise for the last shot, ergo more time than for Messer to react. That's not an amateur mistake, it was good cold blooded tactics on Keith's part.

I was actually still talking about Messer because Kaname kept asking him out for dinner like every episode for the first few episodes and he kept saying no like a faggot. He friendzoned that bitch pretty hard when all she wanted was a cock meat sandwich.

And the amateur mistake is flying head on towards an enemy who is also flying head on towards you. That shit just never ends well, like eating a fuckload of beans before going on a roadtrip through a place where the toilets are both few and of dodgy upkeep. Just corkscrew away.

Now I'm totally not sure which show you're talking about. Since when did Kaname come onto Messer? Episodes it happened please? I just recall her date with Arad at the festival.

And you seriously seem to be hating on Messer for some reason. Delta showed this episode that they'd be screwed facing the Knights without him. Even if Hayate steps up, he's still a novice pilot. He's nowhere near as good as Messer. Heck, I don't even think he's anywhere near as good as Arad. Needless to say, Keith would just own him like he's done twice in the last few episodes.

You absolutely don't know what the heck you're talking about. You treat Messer like he was some pussy when he had every reason to refuse Kaname's invitations since he was in love with her and infected with the fold bacteria that caused Var. You must've forgotten that Var symptoms trigger with strong emotions and that includes feelings of passion and love. He would be risking the life of the woman he loves if his symptoms flare up and he goes out of control.

As for your unfounded claim of Messer's "amateurish mistake" you don't realize that variable fighters don't follow modern jet fighters engagement in combat. They fly at speeds faster than any aircraft we have today with extreme maneuverability that makes missiles near useless against them. Not to mention Macross has been doing these head to head dogfights since its inception and they were done by some of the best pilots in the series. Personally I think Delta already surpassed Frontier in terms of story and characters. The music and songs are not quite at Frontier's level yet but there are already songs that match up to it. We haven't heard all the songs yet so we'll see once its over (and a movie retelling is produced).

Yesss I'm aware of the whole thing about the older woman wining the guy at the end but anything can happen in delta it's not written in stone Mirage will win. So Freyja still has a chance Dude.

I wouldn't call that an amateur mistake, I would call that Keith being a pansy(would use stronger language, unsure what the rules are for that on MAL forums) and used Cowardly(insert stronger language) by using not just his drone in a 1v1(something we have never seen him use before in one of his dogfights) but also a hidden cannon. "But this is war, everything should be on the table". This was a Duel, and certain niceties are usually observed. That said, these Knights have acted more like Terrorist since the start, so I suppose using underhanded tactics in a duel is just par for the course. I can't wait to see these Windies die(except Herman and maybe Roid, who seem to actually know what a Knight is, even if the latter is hiding something with how hinky this whole reason to fight seems to be). Sorry, just wanted to rant cause Keith and most of the other Windies are the most infuriating Macross villains I have seen.

It was a nice song but Messers death happening was something that was easy to see, but I expected him to take out the White Knight with him cause now Hayate has to deal with the White Knight and the crazy red head unless Mirage improves her piloting skills.

I was expecting Messer to die but not him exploding in the cockpit. I also wonder why they didn't incorporate a shield to protect the said cockpit.

They only have shield in the arm shield plate pieces, and thats only when it is in vf/gerwalk, the pin point barrier is a power-intense system, it takes too much power too run.

TOO SOON, OKAY SHOW? WAY TOO SOON.
Look, I'll be honest, I love parts of this show, a lot. But all of the magical girl shit and the uber stereotypical Anime Royalty(tm) w/ the 'special' nervous system hair tips are making me feel just a little... spastic. One of the major things that helped me deal with this is that at LEAST some of the characters in the show are realists, Hayate is one, Mirage is one and Messer was the only other. Without Messer [who died like not even at the half way point, wow.] I'm stuck with just two characters to keep this show even remotely sane.

I love the songs, I like the dog fights [even if they're still lacking like crazy], I'm open to the love triangle [even though Freyja's hair tentacle is like the worst idea ever and so I'm a little set against her and her freaky species from the get go.]

Killing off Messer so soon was a major mistake, his death is PROBABLY going to propel the others into trying harder and make a lot of 'angst' for the oddball pairing of Arad and Kaname, but I really wish that they had left his death out for a little while longer, it would have given his death more of an impact and also would have given team delta a chance for another real mission like the one we had a few episodes ago, that was great and much more 'macross' then a lot of this show has felt.

Seriously disappointing, especially since it's obvious the only girl that's going to die in the magical girl group is Queen Purple Hair. I mean really, they should try harder to make her LESS of a special snowflake for no reason.

Oh, so it's way too dangerous, absolutely unthinkable for him to hang out with her in case he randomly, for no apparent reason, decides to hulk out, but it's perfectly ok to rely on him to protect her in combat situations, when it is expected that he will be exposed to all kinds of things that trigger Var syndrome?

Seems legit. I mean, there's literally no possible way that the latter situation is in any way risking her life at all.

How convenient, I can address you both at once:

When you fly head on towards an enemy who is also flying head on towards you, what you are doing is engaging the enemy on equal terms, where neither of you have an advantage because you both have an equal opportunity to shoot each other. Also, you risk a mid-air collision. None of that is changed by the technology in macross.

The formal term for dogfighting is air combat maneuvering. That's because the entire point of dogfighting is to maneuver yourself into a position where you have an advantage over your opponent. Putting yourself in a position of no advantage like that is not good move, unless your name is Keith and you aren't actually at a disadvantage because you still have another trick up your sleeve.

Oh, and:

NeoRevan said:

I never said that Messer was an amateur; I said that he made an amateur mistake. Just like how even the most skilled and experienced handymen will, every once in a while, waste 5 minutes figuring out why their drill doesn't work before realising it was in reverse. There was never any doubt that he was one of the best pilots to show up in Delta thus far. Bring your reading glasses next time.

Can't say any jimmies have been rustled. I'm just stating observations based on what you've written so far, which clearly indicates a dislike for Messer's character.

As for the second point. You stated two scenes, where she asked him to join her for dinner. Not sure how you look at it, but looking back on the two scenes, it doesn't seem to me like she's looking to pursue a romantic relationship with him. If anything the second scene you mentioned indicated that she's pretty much the "mother" of the team (in conjunction with Arad being the "father" of the group even), and is prone to look after everyone in the team as such, specifically Messer because he's a loner and she's trying what she can to integrate him into the group. Given her proximity to the other girls, I expect that they would know what they're saying when they've observed that Kaname's interest is in Arad and not Messer. Just because a girl asks you out for dinner (specially to join her and another guy in the second instance) doesn't mean she wants his D. You make it sound like no two people of the opposite sex can ever have a platonic relationship.

So the triangle officially begins, as history would have it, frejya is sure to lose. Messer's death was an inevitability tbh, no way they just ship the character off to some next part of the galaxy and no way would it make sense for him to keep fighting in delta squad.

Regardless of the object, it saved Keith and gave him a screen advantage to make a surprise attack at Messer which killed him. I'm not as anal about the small details as you are, just what the results were.

Honestly Mirage and Hayate's piloting career just seems to fall into the whole

"Take some risks" and "Raw talent still needs hardwork" vibes. They pretty much embody those two statements. Mirage surprisingly is a very underwhelming pilot, I'm not sure why they bothered to make it like that then put her into delta squad. In fact other than Messer, all of them seemed very underwhelming and getting overrun by the knights. Which begs the question, delta squad is apparently the "best" squad (I'm not 100% sure on this btw) but given their role how are so many of their pilots average?

At the risk of taking fire, I must confess right now, I have about as many Delta track in my music player(include those I will add when the song come out in July) as F track, the F track is definitly more ... energetic(?) and high-tempo than Delta though.

The saga of epic and valiant struggle against an inhumane faceless enemy(at first, before galaxy is invloved) vs a story of a nation desperatly betting everything they have(WW2 Japan?) for victory and liberate Brisingr cluster people against those Earth Black Megaroad ship opressors.

Aw Hayate & Mirage cooking together.
Freyja nice song lol, reminds me of the weird Hippo song in Mayoiga.
That dogfight so beautiful. Quite strange Messer just transferred out w/o explanation. I missed the early deathflags but the Kaname song made it clear they won't meet again. Earlier somehow convinced myself this is a "light hearted" macross, especially with Freyja around. Taking down that many ships while having Var, his skill is levels above Mirage/Hayate (when are they improving?). Find it weird delta platoon has so few fighters. Axia song was kinda nice.

RIP messer :(

to be honest, i kinda saw that coming. or more like, i thought he was gonna die because that pink twintail hair girl said something flag-death(ish) lol. and that triggered me thinking "you ain't gonna tell me messer will die in this episode" but i didn't really care about it so "whatever". and i'm a little bit suprised that messer really died in this episode. not the fact that he died, i mean the way he died, it was kinda horrible or more like in a terrifiying way to die.

i feel bad for both sides seriously. i mean messer and his crush.
i think this show is getting more interesting.
i'm getting interested in this show because someone just died.......

God dammit Messer... Noooooooooooooo!

As soon as he handed that bracelet I knew what was coming nonetheless when a character like him go you always felt the impact... both rookies are now experiencing losing a comrade in arms as well as the whole crew. Hope they can honor him by not letting his dead go in vain and end this conflict as soon as possible.

Good job on the death flags I guess. I figured something was up when they "sent" Messer away.

All the warning signs were there and yet, I can't believe it happened.

After he bared his soul to Kaname, I thought Messer was going to be shipped off and I was kind of angry they're letting such a good pilot go.

Then .... the attack, he swoops in out of the sky, takes out a ton of enemies only to be taken out by the White Knight after some pawn sacrifice, get it? (chess reference).

And there I was staring at the screen saying "oh NO. oh no. OH NO!"

This is the kind of stuff I love about Macross. Space dogfights. Intense emotions and amazing music, all at the same time.

RIP Messer. You were gone too soon.
