Did anyone else find it bit disturbing that Keaton basically was praising those people even after they said that they were doing tax evasion. I find it hard to believe that Keaton would be okay with shit like that.

Which makes me believe that it's true that after certain point Urasawa was the only creator for the series. Quality of the stories has taken a dip during this ova series and it just might be because of that.

But that's just speculation because i haven't been able to find at which point the original author stopped working on the series.

Another interesting episode. Unfortunately, I think it goes off the rails and recedes into the mundane once it transitioned into a typical career-obsessed murder case.

People have been mentioning Keaton's seemingly duplicitous persona in previous discussions, and now we have the calculating James noting how well Keaton seems to integrate himself with this group of high-rankers. And now with this episode it seems as if Keaton was planning to crash the party from the beginning - perhaps so far back as to fake a car break-down?

It certainly does raise some questions as to how much of the go-lucky Keaton is but a convenient facade.

So yeah....that guy got nuts.

And that was quite the convenient place to have a car breakdown.

I think this might have been the first Keaton episode I actively disliked, the writing was lazy and the story it's self was rather cliche and not very compelling.

Why does being calculating to get what you want mean that you can't be caring and child like as well? I kind of see him more as an agent cooper type, which I think is the intention, both as they look somewhat alike and there have been sly references to Lynch works here and there in the show.

I don't know if there would be a certain point where there will be a distinct drop in quality, if your assumption that the show will suck just because the other creator left is even correct. Shows like this, ones that have a large budget behind them and are episodic, are rarely, if ever, released in the order they are worked on. Unlike smaller budget OVAs, where the next episode depends on how much the episode before it sells, they are free to make an entire batch of episodes like they would for a season of a tv anime.

Also, I think that despite the fact that this episode was the first I actually didn't like, there have been episodes that were not as good as the others even in the tv show, and other than than one episode I say no noticeable dip in quality in the OVA, other than this episode and the one before it. A few bad/mediocre episodes doesn't make an entire series trash and it's a bit snobbish to assume that everything will be garbage from this point on. Oh, and by the way the next episode is back up to normal quality, writing wise.

Funny how you talk about being smug when you are skewing what i said. I SAID IT MIGHT BE BECAUSE OF THAT AND THIS IS JUST SPECULATION and you turn that me just hating the thing needlessly. I don't think i knew beforehand that Urasawa didn't write the whole thing and when i saw these ova episodes being lot worse than the ones in TV series i thought it might be because of that but i didn't say that it WAS BECAUSE OF THAT. It could be that the OVA episodes were B material and so forth and so forth.

If you didn't think that the OVA episodes weren't worse than the ones on the TV version then you are free to feel that way but that's clearly not how i felt because i gave the ova series 6 and the tv series 8. I never called the OVA series trash but your answer to me certainly was just that. Have a nice day.

This story goes very hard on Keaton's detective aspect so I think his circumstances and behavior being extensively faked is in aid of his investigation...although this doesn’t really pay off when he ends up just suddenly announcing he’s there to investigate the suspisious deaths. All Keaton needed to do was get to the place and the rest of his smarter-than-I-look shtick accomplishes nothing.

If the episode was about people who rely only on themselves and people who rely on others, it's a pretty shallow treatment. Making the exponent of one of the opposing views an amoral murderer is just making a blunt statement with nothing behind it.
