So, I've been wanting to watch this anime for a while and I would love to watch this and catch up before it ends in 2 weeks.

The main problem is that I've known about the Kindaichi franchise for a while but never dabbled in it since the original TV series wasn't completely subtitled and I'm not sure if it's wise to just watch this sequel series before I watch the original (fingers crossed it gets completely subbed).

I've heard that you could watch this series without any prior knowledge of the original TV series, how true is this?

I haven't watched much of the original TV series, but it seems like Kindaichi Case Files R seems to be separate from the original series. In the first episode, they give a brief introduction to Kindaichi and Miyuki.

The series is not made continuously and objectively as detective conan did.
You do not have to know any knowledge about the prior series, except recurring characters which appears once in a blue moon (eg: Takatoo Yoichi).

I watched the original up to when it wasn't subbed anymore and I loved every bit of it.
Returns is great, too. It's not that great in the beginning but, later on it gets a lot better. There are SOME characters you may not know from the original, though, like the Puppeteer from Hell (Whom I don't know either.) But it's not a big deal.

I've not watched the original series before watching Returns... and I have to say it really doesn't matter! :D Apart from the main antagonists and characters, you don't have to know much about the original to get the gist of the series ^^

You can watch it independently from the original series.
The cases didn't follow a chronology story.

I watched first season to latest episode 101 (104 is also subtitled and is different one episode case).

I don't care, if I am missing some development because I've watched so much already.
