| Just got around to watching this series (in time for the second season), and the ending was just...eh. I felt like Rei was just to fill the gap Rin left behind. He even had his moments during the series where he admitted to being left out. And then at the very end, he is replaced by Rin. Poor guy, and right after he put in so much effort. Hopefully the next season will include more swimming, and a chance for Rei to be a more full-fledged member of the team. |

| I agree wholeheartedly with you! It's actually the main reason why I dropped Free! In the first few eps, I really liked the show cos of the camaraderie they had and how they easily embraced the new member of the team(Rei). And I was really attached to Rei as a character. Then came the ep of the survival island training. When Rei innocently asked about Makoto pausing when the latter tried to help him, Haruka, the one who's usually stone-faced and emotionless, SHOUTED at Rei and I really felt bad for him cos how the hell would Rei know it's a sensitive thing? Haruka could've at least mildly scolded Rei and I find it strange how Nagisa, the one who's shown to be the heart of the group, just watched the entire exchange, not having a reaction to that. Then also when Rei wanted to know more about Rin and their history, he was feeling really frustratingly confused at that time and it irritated me when Nagisa asked him to calm down and then didn't tell him anything. So yeah..Rei felt like an outcast rather than a new member and a friend to the team. :( |

| I agree with everybody. I don't know, the way Rei was treated really rubbed me the wrong way in a show with such a major theme as camaraderie. I honestly hope he has a bigger role in season two and there is less focus on Rin. It's only fair after what they did to him >.> |

Even though it was necessary, it was just really sad to see Rei give away his place to Rin after he went through so much... What I don't really understand is why there was so much emphasis on Rei being part of the team, especially leading up to the finale... It's like they threw all of that development out the window... The ending left a bad taste in my mouth, even though that ending obviously had been set up from the very beginning.. Maybe, if somehow, they had done something different with Rei and the situation, many people wouldn't be so upset about the last episode and how he got the short end of the stick... Undoubtedly, Rei was the real hero of the show!! Without him, Rin wouldn't have been able to rekindle with his old friends! But he was set up to be the new guy struggling to fit in with a group of old friends (I'm sure we've all been there), and in the end, the team needed to help their old friend before Rei could swim with them... Rei was such a great character for stepping back and letting Rin in; and even though it was completely unfair to him, it made him a very beautiful character! It was true friendship and selflessness, him backing out so that his friends could resolve their issues and finally be happy... I don't think I could have done that if I were in his position... I felt very sorry for him... I really want to see Rei swim a proper relay with his team next season!! He deserves that and so much more! And Rin will learn to step back and make his own relay team at Samezuka instead.. My thoughts, exactly >.> |

| I felt extremely bad for Rei, he was just cashed out like that. I believe he actually had the most unique character amongst them all and actually helped the anime stand a lot ( pushing himself just for the swim club's reputation, confronting Rin although it's supposed to be Haruka's best friend, drowning himself just to catch up with the team) and at the end it was "lol who's rei" |

| I felt bad for him too. He's one of the most complex characters in this show, after Makoto. He gave up his own spot on the team to help Rin reconcile with the others. OtakuToyaMiyako said: it just made me mad when Rei was pretty much replaced by him at the end. ^ |

| Me too, I felt bad for him. He always try to get better in swimming but in the he was just sitting there and watching them. Well, at least he's not sad :) |

| Just watched the series and gotta admit, rei was left out. Felt bad or him too. He is the true MC. |
