This is such a great anime, and it saddens me how few people know about it. Why is that?

Little people knowing about it has nothing to do with its score.

Now I'll answer to your title: it may not appeal to the majority of people.

i think everything about 7 in avarage can be rly good, and i dont think its that underrated...
It was good i rly enjoyed it but i think there are much better romance series.

But i must say, i was caught offguard. I didnt expect smth like that after watching the opening XD
My favorite quotes from animes:

Those who seek miracles will never experience one. The hand of salvation only extends to people
who try to make miracles happen. - Ef a tale of melodies.
I destroy worlds. I create worlds. - Code geass
We are humans. - Shinsekai yori
100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10km run EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! - One punch man

the best things tend to be underrated. The masses generally have poor taste and favor things with more action and less story

I don't think it that underrated but as far as supernatural romance goes I will choose it anyday over ANY KEY DRAMA or similar stuff.I guess having a bittersweet ending doesn't appeal to masses's tastes.
Another reason might be that its a original anime and therefore there was no fandom behind it rating it 9 or 10.

Because it's dumb and the "plot twist" at the end makes it even dumber.

this is exactly the reason, people tend to not appreciate these types of anime. (Sola etc.)

Yes I agree that it is underrated or maybe a more appropriate term is "unrecognized". Seems like a sure fire win for fans of Clannad, Kanon, etc but I only stumbled upon it by accident.

Sola is such an obvious rip-off of AIR it's not even funny, basically the only difference are the action scenes and love triangle.

Oh, and did you know that the original creator of Sola is also an original creator of Kanon? He left KEY after it's release, did his own stuff for a while, then happened to create Sola just a short time after AIR was released...

Just finished and this is my new personal all-time favorite anime. Just absolutely stunning.

I really didn't see many similarities between this and Air, to be frank. Characters in Air felt super childish and Air also was way more SoL-y with less action.

I remember the hype before this came out. AIR and Kanon 2006 were still very, very fresh in everyone's memory and this was advertised as being written by one of the creators of Kanon 2006. Excitement for sola was very, very real. The art was stunning, the music was great and the previews were promising. We were all counting down the days until it was released to TV. The expectations were through the roof. If you want to understand the hate for sola you really have to start here. Then the show debuted and after a decent start with a great premise the series pretty quickly declined into mediocrity and wedged in a convoluted ending which shifted the focus of the story away from Matsuri and towards Aono and didn't connect with the viewers at all. In short it was fine, but pretty average, and everyone was expecting the next AIR. This series is not underrated at all. It was an average show that was overhyped and the fans reacted accordingly when they were inevitably let down. I'll never forget how disappointed I was when it was over. I really, really wanted to love this show and I did take to Matsuri quickly, but halfway through and I was already getting frustrated with it. I ended up giving it a 6/10.
