This has been a topic that rolls around my head every once and again. What is the most realistic portrayal of a military in anime? Obviously, realism and anime do not always go hand in hand, but I'm talking about established rank structure and character interaction more than physical tools used. And before anyone says FMA, no way do you have a CWO that young. Come on now. |

Well for just the rank structure alone Robotech and of course Full Metal Panic come to mind. There is also Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. I would like to point out that a lot of military(ish) anime takes place at a time where young people are the most numerous or in the case of anime like Full Metal Panic it is more of an organization with military ranks. |

The Army, in their infinite wisdom (at the time), decided helicopters were not a proper place for "real" officers, but they also didn't want enlisted pukes to consider themselves "officers" by letting them fly the helos. What they did do (at first) was send a bunch of college grads and drop-outs through a quick course on chopper flying. While going through the course, they were WOC's (What's a WOC? Something you thwow at a Wabbit, of course! (sorry, I waited 20 years to use that joke and couldn't resist)). Upon successful completion of the flying course these 90-day wonders (aka Warrant Officer Candidates) became WO1's. Assuredly, some of them, through attrition and discharges, made CWO before the age of 25 or 26. Later, when a lot of these extremely young warrants started getting covered in so-called glory and the traditional ossifers weren't, someone switched it back to "real" officers were the only way you could be a pilot, 'course by then they had a shit-pot full of these WO1-WO4's that they had to do something about. Most of them they turned into "real" officers and the ones they couldn't sucker, they quietly shoved out of the service. And before anyone says FMA, no way do you have a CWO that young. Come on now. As to a realistic rank structure in anime, watch the Patlabor series of anime, including the first 2 movies (ignore the 3rd, it's crap). Sure it's about police mechas, but you have a clear cut and consistent rank structure throughout the series that has it's basis in the military since most of the senior members came from within the military before riding the Labors for the civilian world. |

Sorry good sir, that was before my time. I know that during times of attrition service members can be promoted rather rapidly, but that did not appear to be the case in FMA. It just seemed like another one of those improbable (and in this case unnecessary) anime quirks. I'll definitely give Patlabor a try, whats one more show added to the list right? *edit: incidentally, now that I think about it, I had a 26 year old SSgt who left the Marines to go be a WO for the army to fly helos. That's pretty young. * Regarding Full Metal Panic, that also struck me as curiously weighted toward very young and inexperienced people in lofty military roles. I mean, a little girl for a sub commander? I don't care how cute she is in a sun dress, I want her to be competent. Alas, it made the show more interesting, so I won't fault them. Personally I really liked FMP because of how improbable it was. |

I relate to OE's comments about WOC's because I did Air Traffic Control AIT at Ft. Rucker, Alabama in 1974. Some of were pretty young and some were pretty cute . . . .so was I . . . but I digress . . . I find all the kids as officers and pilots and what not annoying at times too. These are among the most realistic I have run across, some more so than others. I can verify that Uchuu Senkan Yamato, The Sky Crawlers, Pumpkin Scissors use proper military rank structures and they are damn fine anime. I am currently watching The Cockpit. I'll let y'all know what I think of it later. The rest are probably in my ptw list, if not they will be. |

It's about a mechanized police department, which has a military structure and, on several occasions, interacts with the Japanese Defense Force. I think you will find the ensemble cast delightful. The excuse for the series is the young female mecha officer who manages not to be too annoying, but my favorite characters are the seemingly sleepy eyed Captain and the crusty old chief mechanic and his sports car. I'm absolutely NOT a fan of wacky/silly funny but this one made me laugh because I felt like I knew the prototype for every character involved. |

Here is one that uses military ranking which I find strange and you have to watch this one because it is only this one that you find it. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers it is about a universe that uses magic users as a from of military style defense force. I kid you not. I did find it easier to watch this one because it was more military the Sailor Moon>( ( Sailor Moon is the only way someone could torture me for information) I mention Strikers because of the rank system it makes it sort of interesting(that and all the "Magic Girls" are stripped naked before they transform) |

You know people, I was 20 years old when I was commissioned a 2ndLt in the Marines in 1967. I was the 2nd youngest officer in the Marines. I didn't turn 21 for 6 months. I also became a pilot for the Marines at 22. So, if we want to talk about ages and realism, some of these anime aren't as far off as you might think. |
