Short History: Uesugi Kenshin is a fuedal lord who resides in Kasugayama Castle, Echigo Province. He is famed for his honorable conduct, his military expertise, rivalry with Takeda Shingen and his belief in the Buddhist god of war – Bishamonten. His original name was Nagao Kagetora. He changed his name several times until it became Uesugi Kenshin; Uesugi when he inherited his title as the Kantō Kanrei (Kantō Shogun’s Deputy), and Kenshin after he became a Buddhist monk. Sometimes, he is referred as The Dragon of Echigo because of his martial art skills. Kenshin was the fourth son of a noted warrior. However, his father died when he was at a young age and his older brothers had fought for the control of the Nagao family. Because he was still young, he was sent to Rizen temple where he spent seven years dedicated to study. At the age of fourteen, he was contacted by his father’s acquaintances to go up against his brother’s rule, the latter being an ineffective leader for the province. At first, he was reluctant but decided that Echigo needed it. Three years passed and he was able to claim the control of his clan from his older brother. Kenshin immediately set out to gain the trust of the people he was leading. During this time, he often crossed paths with Takeda Shingen, who was trying to expand his territory. This was the start of the rivalry between the Dragon and the Tiger. But because of the sudden arrival of the Demon Lord and his abrupt overtake in the provinces of Japan, the rivals were forced to form a temporary alliance along with the other feudal lords. Although, he is the legitimate successor, the Oda clan and its retainers were divided into many factions. Despite that, he had successfully forge an alliance between the Imagawa clan of Suruga and the Kira clan of Mikawa. Over the years, Nobunaga had eliminated all oppositions within the clan and throughout the province. Nobunaga’s success in the battlefield was unrivaled even during the times when it seemed like he would lose. He had his sister, Oichi, marry Azai Nagamasa, the daimyo of Omi Province, which would later help him pave the way to Kyoto in Yamashiro Province. As the Oda clan’s power increased, the Asakura clan was disdainful. When Nobunaga launched a campaign into the Asakura clan’s domain, Azai, broke the alliance to honor the Azai-Asakura alliance. Nobunaga was at a disadvantage. Then an unknown man wanted to forge an alliance with him. This unknown man had a strong army and had already taken over a few provinces to the North of Owari. Echizen was an easy capture for Nobunaga since their military prowess was low. Asakura fled to Omi Province, asking for assistance from the Azai clan. Although Asakura wanted to reclaim Echizen, the Dark Lord had invaded the province and spread his dominion over the central part of Japan, which led to the temporary alliance formed between the warring lords.
