As we all know, anime is a Character driven industry, you are only as popular as your characters.

So far Ookami-san anime has not shown me anything to think that this will be anything other than a sub-par anime with mild comedy and decent episodes at best.

HOWEVER, after just 3 episodes; Ryouko Ookami already has over 130 member favorites and her fan club is also getting bigger every day.

So how popular will she get, many people instantly like her because she looks like a tall Taiga and has the voice of Hinagiku Katsura (Shizuka Itou), and she's also TSUNDERE.

Here is some anime girls who have made it big in the last 2-3 years:

Taiga Aisaka (3,000+ member favorites)
Mio Akiyama (2,700+ member favorites)
Hitagi Senjougahara (2,400+ member favorites)
Hinagiku Katsura (1,500+ member favorites)

I personally think she can be more popular than Hinagiku, she might not be better than Hina but at least she's the main character.

She won't get that big, she lacks uniqueness. Nothing really sets her apart from the other "tsundere" characters that people are so fond of (myself included).

What made Taiga so unique???

She's small, big Tsundere, and is voiced by Rie.

You can say the same thing for Shana, Louise, and Nagi, in fact a lot of Tsunderes have that quality.

The fact is that people love repetition and Taiga was just another version of Louise and Shana put together.

I believe Ryouko has a chance because she's just another copy of Taiga and Hinagiku. The only thing lacking right now is the show itself, if the anime can get more and more popular the way ToraDora did, then she has a chance.

Is it just me, or the words "uniqueness" and "tsundere" don't really go well with each other?..

I was sorta excluding Taiga because I agree she isn't that unique. But there's still something that people (again, myself included) like about her.

I didn't think of it that way but yeah, the show is hurting her. Toradora had nice side characters, where as this show does lack quality characters.

Hm, probably. But tsundere characters can still be unique.

Well it's Tiger vs. Wolf...

It'll be tough for Ryouko to win, Taiga is very popular and ToraDora was a pretty good anime.

Taiga lacks something Ryouko has, DEM THIGHS! but seriously seeing as how popular tsundere are and if the show catches on we might see her get reasonably far :)

Zero no Tsukaima/Shakugan no Shana wasn't that popular in the beginning either.. (i know it because i was one of the first one who knew/watched the first season of both)
It's a bit too early to guess since it really depends on how good the upcoming episodes of Ookami-san will be (and also if the ending will be decent)..
The character designs are very good imho and right now I already prefer Ryouko over Taiga (Taiga is kinda annoying for me.. Ryouko is just badass :3).
And if you think Taiga is unique then I totally have to disagree with you.. :|

Basically,

If they got rid of the narrator Satomi Arai from the show, I might begin to like the show and have a better perspective of Ryouko...until then this anime is on my 'On Hold' list as I can't stand the narration...its like Arai's in love with her own voice instead of actually narrating...its a fail Hayate no Gotoku

I couldn't care less about Ryouko as a character. In fact, most of the characters in Ookami-san have given me no reason to care at all.

I blame the show's producer's for playing on Arai's popularity from Index and Railgun. I can't think of any other reason why they would purposefully have a narrator being so bloody intrusive in every scene.

And, even if you lessened the narration, it's still a mediocre show.

Hinagiku is loved for being Hinagiku, Taiga is loved for being Kugimiya Rie tsundere goddess #4 which got pretty popular after she played Shana back in 2005.

As for Ookami, they mgiht be the same type of character, but the legions of Kugimiya fans far outnumber Itou Shizuka fans. And yes, while I myself love Taiga's character a lot because she was a tsundere developed well, part of it comes from the fact that she was given the Kugimiya boost. If some othe VA had voiced Taiga, I wonder if she could even break the 1000 favourites line

I don't really see the narration as something bad... I see it more as comic relief part.
Indeed, she is quite intrusive... And sometimes annoying as one wants to pay attention to the action and has to hear her explaining stuff. Still, there are parts where an intrusive narrator fits well for comic relief (for example, her throwing about how Otohime looked like in grade school, or when Ryouko and Ringo are in the bath and she says "sorry to show you these disappointing--). Other than that, sometimes it's just annoying.

As for Ryouko herself, i really don't care whether she is tsundere or not. And no, I don't think her fan group will grow that much... But we'll see.

Don't forget Tachibana Kanade ; ) She instantly reached over 1000 ^^ I think Ookami will maybe reach the 500 mark ,but it depends on how the story continues.

if they keep bring out her weakness and find some mixture with her tsundere side she might be bigger than Hina

honestly i dont want her to be bigger than Hitagi only because she isnt anywhere near Hitagi.

im surprised that Taiga is that popular. i mean she is a good character but for me Hitagi is a better character followed by Hina then Mio then Taiga.

back to Ookami
she is cute, she is tsundere. but well there has to be more vulnerability. Let see if she shows more of her true self to Morino.

Some of the Clannad girls as well, especially Nagisa and Tomoyo (though surprisingly enough Tomoya has more favorites than either of them).

I can see Ryouko reaching the 1000's if the show gets popular enough and she develops as a character well enough. I'm usually pretty anti-tsundere (I very much dislike Shana and Taiga) and even I have taken a bit of a liking to Ryouko. I think it's her hair and clothes more than her personality (for me).

It's not really about loving the VA, although it helps.

Mio Akiyama became the MOST poplar anime character of 2009, she is voiced by Yoko Hikasa......DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO SHE IS???

It's all about the character, even Rie has voiced some characters who are not popular at all.

Here's some more proof, Hinagiku (who is not even the main female character) was on a show that was very MEDIOCRE, however by season 2 she was a star and had a huge fanbase, in the end it all comes down to how likable you are.

It does help if your show is popular, but not always, look at FATE TESTAROSSA, very few people have even watched MSLN, and yet she has 1,300+ Member favorites.

They look like mother and daughter (you choose what way round).

Rip-off characters generally don't do as well as the original, Ookami is definatley a Tiagar replica.

I can't see this seies taking off in the proportion ToraDora did, as ToraDora had a huge following before the anime, as there was a manga and lightnovel that had sold very well. This is an anime only series.

I prefer Ookami to Tiagar, I don't know why? It's possibly the situation both characters are in? This series is quite light-hearted and Tiagar was so stubborn it got annoyng at times.

I don't think she can surpass Taiga, but I really think she can easily pass Hinagiku.

Haha, no. That's not the only reason Taiga is loved, because that's not even close to why I love her.

Just thought I'd bump this for the lulz... Ryouko is at 282 right now.

Some pretty bold statements about her surpassing Taiga and Hina, huh? :P

Looking at her number of fans, it's not much but it's better than none anyway.
