Maybe it's because I'm not Japanese, but a lot of activities that the characters participate in in this show feel like they would make more sense in an University setting rather than in highschool. The thesis competition, various practical research projects, enrollment in what seem to be fairly specialised courses, the interschool sports festival even. Does anyone else feel like this show would've worked better if it was placed in an University?

High school is the best time in the life of the average Japanese it's why so many series are set in high school. Once they are in the workforce it's literally hell. Some series use college/university as setting but it's still a lot less compared to high school.

Nah… the anime is good as a high school scene, makes more sense for their plot points as them being younger, then being older as adults.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

A lot of japanese anime portray highschool as what university would be for us. In my mind I just switch it to University. Because there is no way even a third of half of the structure, the tournaments, the clubs, the campus, the labs, literally everything, they have as a highschool would actually exist in a real life highschool (removing all the magic and fiction of course)

I think high school makes sense. My relatively average American high school had programs that were somewhat analogous to Mahouka (science fair/competition, specialized classes for learning trades, state level athletic competitions, etc.) They weren't nearly as organized/professional as Mahouka, but I think that is easily explained in universe. In Mahouka magicians are seen as national defense assets so it makes total sense that the government would be interested in dumping tons of money/resources into providing the absolute best schooling in order to train more capable magicians.

oh man you have no idea what Japanese high school is like lol

If anything, Japanese university is far easier than their high schools
