And thus ends the Buu Saga. It held up a lot better than I remember, albeit it still had it's faults. Once the fight with Super Buu starts getting going it basically just becomes a series of intense power-ups with one side of the fight basically dominating, and it's hard to have any real investment in the battles when they're structured like that. And the Kid Buu battle didn't fare much better, Kid Buu has some neat moves like kicking into the ground and having his foot come up, but he doesn't really feel like much of a threat. It honestly doesn't feel like the battle with Buu here has much drama or stakes, to me at this point it's mostly just an excuse for character reflection and series reflection. I like how everything comes together with Vegeta and Hercules and the Spirit Bomb's formation, but the finishing blow is more of a formality than anything else. Buu being allowed to be saved is a great ending to this, you know if Vegeta can be than obviously Buu can be too.

I like how the core of the Buu arc tends to be on the influence of people, the necessity of having those in our lives, who we love and can care for. Kid Buu's is evil incarnate specifically because he lacks the influence of anyone, the more people he absorbed and came in contact too, the better person he became. Fat Buu himself changed to good thanks to Hercules, the world's affection for Hercules is ultimately what defeated Buu, and Vegeta's own character arc here is driven by how he's changed, thanks to Kakarot and his family. That's really neat and not something I ever put thought into as a kid.

I do find the ending to this a bit lame, with just the character portraits of all our heroes. It's nice to see this characters and get an "end of series" vibe from it, but I don't really feel like it has the impact some of the other endings had. Like I almost teared up at the clipshow kinda reflection they did at the end of the 23rd Budokai. But of course, with the 10 year time-skip at the end, there isn't a reason to go all out on the ending nostalgia yet.

I like Old Kaioshin constantly freaking out about the usage of the dragon balls. It makes sense that it should be some kind of downside to that.

More on the flashback next chapters, but cool to see Trunks grown up, resembling the future version of him. Oh, and Gohan has glasses, as foreshadowed with him not being able to catch the earring! Or, glasses and a bunch of books is just Toriyama's way of saying he's finally a scientist smartman something something.

Anyway, the Boo arc. What a ride. Same as the previous arc, we constantly change focus which is a bit jarring. Starting out with Gohan going to school and being a superhero has absolutely nothing to do with anything that happens later on. Gohan is introduced as our new main character, and for a while, he even gets to do Goku's normal thing of showing up to rescue everyone. But in the end, it's all for nothing. I would have liked it more if he showed up to battle Boo as the Great Saiyaman. His new relationship with Videl also goes nowhere, which is a shame.

The focus is instead shifted towards two pairs of characters - Goten and Trunks, and Goku and Vegeta.

Goten and Trunks are two great new characters. I love their interactions and humor. They add alot of playfulness back into Dragon Ball which I think was needed after the serious Cell arc. Their roles are pretty much done perfect and I don't think they are overused or underused.

This is really the point where Dragon Ball becomes the Goku and Vegeta-show though, which as far as I understand, continues till this day. Goku is Goku, he's always good. Vegeta is an improvement from the Cell arc, especially after his death and resurrection. This is actually the arc where he reforms and becomes a hero, and it is nice to see after all this time struggling with his character.

Overall, I do like the tone of the Boo arc. It's a magical adventure, not too dissimilar from the earlier parts. There's still a lot of dark stuff happening, which can be quite jarring tonally. It is the arc with the most amount of death afterall.

I'm also not a fan of the overuse of transformations, but that isn't that different from the two previous arcs. The fusion doesn't do anything to me either, except that I really enjoy Gotenks' fights and his abilities.

Boo is a great villain. I love his abilities, him being this gooey blob that can alter his body and his regeneration makes sense within the story. Boo has a good origin and it's interesting to get the different forms of him. I get bored of him when he has absorbed everyone and is smart and talkative, but I love all other forms of him. I also like that he doesn't constantly get stronger. Having the final fight be against the smaller original Boo is great, and works just as well even if he isn't the strongest that ever was. It works much better for me than Cell returning to be the strongest for no real reason, just so Gohan could defeat him at his peak. And we actually have a final fight where multiple characters play a role, in a way we haven't since the original fight against Vegeta (which still is the best fight of the series).

A lot of people rate this arc pretty low, but I think it does some things really well. Not one of my favourites but it's definitely a good one, and it does work well as ending to the series.
