Bro icl just stop talking real quick.

SL is not mindless action without much buildup. Sung Jin Woo leveling up has a purpose. People getting awakened has a purpose. Gates popping up outta nowhere when the Earth was perfectly fine before has a purpose. Everything that happens in SL somewhat develops the story further which is how good stories are written.

I cant go into depth obviously cuz I'm a manhwa reader and you're clearly not but to SL is just mindless buildup and action means you have absolutely ZERO watching comprehension goddamn. Most of what you see now will pay off later on into the series trust that.

Criticism for SL's characterization and messages are valid af. But to actually disrespect the story and the worldbuilding and say it has no value/purpose is just so pretentious because not every story needs to be belief challenging and 'deep'.

@NegativeRei rq obviously my dumb ahh assumed you would have read the manhwa since it seemed like you was talking bout the whole thing but you havent. My bad. Most of the plot threads like the existence of the system and the ants have payoffs later down the line. You just gotta give it time. Like you do with most stories.

I have watched Fire Force and dropped its ass, I dont just remember enough of that boring shi to grade it.(I'll read the manga soon enough).

And fan service is not 'based' when it comes to works like Fire Force. It works in shows and mangas like Prison School and Grand Blue which are for young adults but for a shonen, targeted to young boys, the constant exposure to the objectification and sexualization of women is not 'based.' Especially when said exposure is so much, majority of the anime watchers complain its too much so much so that a major plot point will be happening and then Hibana chest will just start jiggling all over the place(hyperbole you get the point.)

And goddamn when i say human i mean the emotional side. Thorfinn is a heavily flawed individual who has great guilt and turmoil and inner conflict within himself. Simply because SL has generic concepts integrated into its world like gates and dungeons and a game system doesnt mean that its worldbuilding is just bad and flat.

For example gates. SL literally variates between them in arcs. Red gates(Baraka), Double dungeons(Tusk arc and the Architect), Dungeon breaks(Jin-Ah and in the final war with the monarchs). Again, not a lot of other series beforehand or afterwards put this much thought into variation as to not bore the reader.

If you have read the series, which I am assuming you are cuz you quite literally said to. Then you why Sung Jin Woo is the only one who can constantly level up and why the system was given to him and why other hunters are capped at their strength. And you why Gates popped up outta nowhere and how mana came to exist on Earth.

Furthermore, there is so much thought put into hunting business. There is such a long process that comes with clearing a gate with a big guild so that they maximise profit. Dangers of joining smaller guilds. How exactly hunters make money. How exactly overpowered superhumans are kept in check with stuff like the Hunters Association being established in most global superpowers. I could go on and on You bring up something like TBATE which also had arcs of adventurers(basically hunters) and gates and you wouldnt find even a third of this much detail(manhwa only). There is so much love and thought put into making stuff like Hunters realistic and people like you just eat up whatever the next overly intellectual dumbass says and make that your opinion. You wont find anyone call TBATE generic even tho it starts of with a cliche world and plot(just like SL).

I havent even mentioned the amount of lore and worldmaking SL acc has. Makes it feel real with a world that had history. With Monarchs, Rulers, Outer Gods. Need i say more?

Of course there are flaws with SL worldbuilding. Re-awakening could have been explored more. How tf did Ashborn and the Architect manage to make Earths past into a gate. How exactly did the Rulers bring the denizens of chaos into Earth and trap them. You can critique SL' s world. But you cant just say its flat and bad because that means you cant read wtf.

i can understand the prospective of emotional build but the fights scenes are not at all
After the snake fight,
the dungeon he goes to next is because he has pay rent for the house so he goes in that dungeon where he kills humans
second time he go to S rank gate because the system gave him purpose to go in that dungeon so that he can get the elixier of life
THird time he has a request from hunter association to fill up the member for clearing the D-rank gate, where he meets with purple haired guy.
Fourth he goes with jinhos request because he is the only one who knows about jinwoo and makes a deal with him to go to dungeon
And last he goes to job change quest because he was curious to how much system wants him to push to get more stronger.

THere simple and easy.

Okay, as an anime watcher only: I'm going to hang around for the 2nd season after I scored the first one 6/10 to see how I feel. I don't think it's bad, but I realize that power fantasy may not be for me? It's not the aspect of repeating the trope. I found myself feeling indifferent to all characters, and when it happens, I have a hard time following through. The story interested me in the beginning, but again, the prospect of powering up may not be my cup of tea. As for the praised action, the hype I felt in the beginning left me later, and I love action shows! I felt it way more on paper when I read Ajin and all of Trigun last year for example. All in all I don't understand the hype for it because I think I'm not the target audience. If the new season doesn't change how I feel, then I will stop at that. I just wanted to check out what the whole fuss was about :p now watch me get eaten alive for saying all this

I guess the only reason this series sucess out of countless similar plot with OP main character was because Jinwoo basically SOLO everything unlike all other OP main character out there always crowded with harem or pointless and useless nakama.

MC isn't even OP. You people need to watch isekais and understand what a real OP is.

(Even if he's the only one that can get stronger in a world where no one else can get stronger, he has to work for it. His struggles against other enemies are real. And the potential consequences are very strongly foreshadowed.)

Even though this show has a rather fair score of 8.27 here it's still underrated by elitists who seem to have watched a completely different series than I or the people who love it.

The action and animation are very good, yes, but the story is too. It's not the most complex or deep ever, and it lacks in the character department, but I feel like many shows that are critically acclaimed do also.

There's a lot of tension, moral struggle within the self of the MC, etc. Anyone who says this is a show where you "turn off your brain" has no idea what they're talking about. There's good stuff here that people deliberately choose to ignore because it's an isekai-adjacent. Same thing that happened with Re:Zero.
