Damn, they're trying to everything possible even if it means resorting to ancient magic.

Yuzu and Kurumi make a great team in this show and played a key role to help here. Feels like Kurumi really has grown out of her shell and made the best use of her talents.

So everything is finally revealed and with one episode to go, Yuzu and Kurumi will certainly have their work cut out for them in the finale. It was nice to get a little bit of northern backstory, but I’m still confused on how he went from a shy twink hanging with his girl best friends to a magical elitist wanting to gatekeep ancient magic and use modern magic to siphon people life energy away. Maybe his friends death which is kind assumed given how he looks at Kurumi and Yuzu who remind him of them.. but still a bit murky.

Modern magic just doesn’t even make sense to me. Mana/element M is naturally occurring so why not just enjoy what the earth has blessed you with rather than taking peoples life force to keep magic for a select elite few? There’s just no positives to that and the conflict here seems.. poorly thought out to say the least. Best part of this series is for sure the girls and the character interactions lol

Was really good to see Suzuki sensei get serious for once! She’s always smiling and so happy go lucky but northern’s philosophy really brought out her angry side. Also seeing Kurumi and Yuzu finally use ancient magic omg!! All that hard work finally paid off. It is a bit funny that Yuzu has ended up becoming the second lead here after it seemed like it would be Maki through the first half of the show lmao.

Still wondering who Kurumi’s grandma is though..

Really nice to see Yuzu and Kurumi work together they are such a great duo. It was nice to see some of Northern's backstory as well.

Pretty sure what happened is that Northern never got the hang of using ancient magic, so he invented the system of modern magic mostly to allow himself to use magic at all.

Then the government saw this and ran with it because the notebooks were more reliable -- they always cast exactly the spell you mean to, while ancient magic is a bit more chaotic where the "same spell" seems to have different effects based on what you were imagining at the time. And apparently they don't care if this means siphoning off life energy from a bunch of kids. (Though the implication seems to be that this wasn't previously fatal, but the problem now is that too much modern magic is being used so it needs a dangerously larger energy supply.)

What I don't really understand is how they're dividing the kids between those who can use the notebooks and those who can't. What I suspect is that the standard track kids are actually the people with the highest natural mana (and thus would be the best magicians) and so the best sources of life energy. So everything's backwards.

My best guess there is that somehow Kurumi's grandma **is** one of Northern's childhood friends (and staying youthful is one of the perks of stealing life energy).

I'm not sure where Ms Suzuki fits into that though. She has the same familiar as the other friend but clearly isn't her. But maybe she's a descendant, like Kurumi?

That makes a lot of sense as to why he switched actually. I guess the deer scene was a subtle nod to that since his friends had to save him and he wanted to be like them.

Many flashbacks of Northern as a student with Minegenius who I think might be the one who gave Kurumi her notebook and Hazel who might have passed away saving Rettoran.
Now we know the truth about today's magic and why the students are affected.
Kurumi & Yuzu might be able to restore ancient magic to the world.

I have ADD, ADHD & AUTISM, but this won't stop me. Let's keep having fun together.

It would be absolutely wild if the show just ended with the Academy blowing up and everyone dying, it won't happen of course but I can't deny that there's a small part of me that wants to see that version of events

@deltahalo241 I would raise my score if they did that, would at least wake me up from these underwhelming episodes.

As we're reaching the finale it has been pretty much confirmed that the magic system in this anime works however the user wants it to work. Be that firing a laser or reshaping a branch, it can pretty much do anything and while they gave an explanation on how it supposedly works that doesn't really satisfy me at all. Well, in any case, with Northern's backstory being briefly touched upon, this was probably the first time we say Minami that angry. As much as Kurumi didn't make the conneciton between charms and ancient magic, they also took their time to relate Northern with what was happening. Sometimes the show does this kind of thing and it really boggles me.

One episode left and I feel like so much will be left unexplained or the pacing will be trash. I wouldn't be surprised about the latter becoming true.

I'm confused what happened in this episode, it was very torn and I felt like they merged two-three episodes of material into one.

ok, some details on the past revealed. Looks like the magician who gave Kurumi the notebook is Minami sensei's friend (classmate)?

sort of feels weird to see sensei getting angry, but I guess anyone sane would have got angry when they see what Harris has done.

glad to see Yuzu declare that she and Kurumi are already magicians.

looking forward to next week! :)

Huh, so the whole thing is just about a Edgy dude that's jelly of his two childhood friends cause he sucked at using magic. So the dude decides to make it so no one else can use magic and decrease the Health of the world while monopolizing magic to make money. (Sealing natural magic and killing students with no oppositions cause they control the government, since they already silenced off anyone else that uses Ancient Magic as mentioned at the beginning of series)

.

This means, we need to kill off modern magic to save the world. Time to murder those Corpa bastards.

(too bad this isn't that kind of series)

(This is more or less, Friendship save the world kind of series)

But I am hopping this Harris dude dies in the end. Who knows how many other students have been killed (or life span decreased, these students will all DIE early in life, since they literally shown that the school is sucking out the student's lifeforce for as long as they're in the school)

.

The sucking life force of students its dark damn, didn't expect that to be the source of the modern magic. can't imagine how the magumi(?) students will feel if they learn about it.

This episode is pretty cool, but i'm pretty curious about the guy's backstory. Hazel is evidently Kurumi's grandma, but who is the other girl? She has Suzuki sensei's same seiyuu so i'm really curious if she is a descendant, but the girl was still alive and young when Kurumi was a kid so its kinda confusing.

Also WHAT'S the deal with that character that keeps calling Kurumi their sister???? i'm so curious about that but i can't see that wrapping up nicely in the one episode left we have lol. unless we get a second season but i doubt it

I feel like I'm watching Naruto with this awful plot wwww.
So antagonist is jealous idiot who because the one he loved died decided to destroy the world claiming "equality" when all he's doing is opposite by monopolizing power with human sacrifices as fuel. Even with the human sacrifice thing, I still don't see why this is TV-14.

Lots of mirroring between Hazel (Ms. Suzuki) & Minegenius (Miss Magician) and Yuzie & .... okay I just looked up character lists and now I'm more confused... ignore prior, I see mirroring between Northern's two girls and our two girls.

We know dog is somehow connected to MC and maybe Miss Magician, and both dog/cat connected to Ms. Suzuki.

They show us that next episode and season finale will be all happiness <3 Such a cute show.

The "positive" is that people inept can use spells, and complex ones at that, extremely easily. We always see the notebooks doing "complex" spell arrays. It's actually very similar to another completely different anime I watched recently which also used human sacrifices so the masses had access to convenient magic.

quick edit: I see Mirality already gave really nice explanation.

My best guess right now is Hazel is Kuruma's mom, and the dog is also Hazel's kid right now. I've honestly got a bit lost, which could either be due to people having multiple names, or Northern actually being as old as Grandma or... I don't know.
