For years Eita was crushing on her while she was crushing on Souma, even after their reunion their love triangle remained the same. There were several events from episode 7 to 9, notably Eita going out his way to help her get to the central exam, Natsume telling Komiya she doesn't want her to date Eita and Natsume telling Morikawa that she no longer likes Souma but she likes someone else (Eita).

But honestly, what is it that changed her mind? Eita escorting her to the exam? That's nothing new considering he was helping and taking care of her ever since middle school. I just don't see it. Earlier in the anime (and before the reunion) she never looked at Eita as a love interest, she said hurtful things that solidified how she looked at him. There were no signs of changes when it comes to her feelings towards Eita, but when suddenly Souma became untouchable and Eita had a pursuer she's basically looking to settle...

Eita x Komiya ending was looking more and more realistic with hints and Eita becoming more open and friendly with her. I usually don't care about ships and swallow whatever choice the studio goes with, but it needs to make some sense. Eita being head over heels is one thing, but there was no sensible feelings on Natsume's side. It's actually very common for romance animes when one of the MCs come to a realization like "wait I liked them all along", but usually they make it make sense, not here tho. Her only argument for Eita is basically "there's another girl interested in him now" and "he's always been nice to me tbf", just in a span of 2 episodes. I can't be the only one thinking her feelings felt unprompted.

And to keep it fair, I also don't like the idea of Eita settling for Komiya, she deserves better than being a second choice, although she didn't mind that at all. I'm sad that the director/studio chickened out and went with the safe, expected ending. Komiya ending would've been more original and less scummy. But the most justified ending would've been Eita not ending up with either of them, since Komiya didn't deserve Eita and Eita didn't deserve Komiya.

I actually agree to this. Hate when this happens in romance animes. And didnt natsume fell in love with Souma first just cuz he picked her fcking eraser if i remember but eita being for her there all time didnt count unless komiya didn't get in picture. It wouldnt hurt them to change scenarios in many romances but its safe route all time.

It’s been quite some time since I have watched the show, but from what I remember this is what happened:

Put simply, this was a bad adaptation of a good novel. I believe the Light Novel brings more background information about all of the characters, which probably would have lead to more answers regarding your questions. While I cannot answer any questions due to it being quite some time since I watched it, I recommend picking up the novel.

I’m sorry, you misremembered. It’s an original project. Not an adaptation of some sorts

@Gimboy but at the same time there's a novel that was being released a bit before the anime, it's possible that the novel is more detailed or something

@griddyweeb You’re right. This is a weird case though.
