The setting is simple and doesn’t overwhelm you with too much information at once. The Tower that grants you anything once you achieve it really drew me into the story, especially when the main character’s motivation is pure and unwavering. Most of the characters’ personalities are distinct and well-developed. The plot twists are what make Season 1 a masterpiece.
However, Season 2 is a whole different situation. I personally dislike most Korean manhua and anime series because what I often see are those invincible protagonist type shits. For example, in the second or third episode, the so-called "Shinsu test" just turns your Shinsu power into points. It’s very unnecessary, and in my opinion, it’s shitty af because I feel like the test is just there to show off Yoru’s power. There’s no need for that. The first season did well in showing his potential without overdoing it. I think the people who add these things into their stories are sad and pathetic because, honestly, they probably just want to feel special but can’t, so they project that onto their manhua characters.
In some Korean TV shows I’ve seen, rich kids bully poor kids over living in small houses or not having nice things. Maybe that’s why a lot of Korean manhua characters suddenly become god-like—they’re trying to live out some fantasy. It is just sad.
Anyway, Season 2 is a mess. The setting gets all stirred around and not making sense. First, most of the people were selected because they have potential or are already strong. Even the second test was so hard that half of them got eliminated or even killed. But then on the 21st floor, you’ve got people who don’t even seem to have the capability to be selected.
The most obvious issue is why there are houses for permanent living on the 21st floor. That doesn’t make sense at all. Aren’t places for normal people to live supposed to be in the lower areas? And if you’re eliminated, aren’t you supposed to get kicked out of the Tower? So why can they just keep challenging the same floor even after being eliminated? It’s so inconsistent.
Also, I hate how the architecture style suddenly changes to Korean low-end buildings. Couldn’t they have kept the same style as Season 1? The futuristic style was cool, and I think most people wouldn’t want to see ghetto-looking stuff, especially on a challenge floor. Why do Korean manhua artists always bring their real-life experiences into the stories? Like I genuinely don’t gaf about how their lives are going.
I also hate the new character designs. The artist probably tried to make the characters look unique but failed completely. They look like those RPG characters you create by hitting randomize, they look weird af.
The most unforgivable thing is those random abilities that show up. Like the little floating wing above the guy’s right shoulder. Even the administrators don’t have abilities like that. Isn’t the combat system supposed to be based on weapons and Shinsu? So where the hell did all these random abilities come from?
I’m so disappointed. I thought Season 2 would be good, or at least not bad. But I feel like I was betrayed. The random crap the artist added makes me want to cry. If they just didn’t include all that stuff, it could’ve been perfect.
