Am I the only one that thought twas a cringe and meh speech?
@Rasco Not the only one.

"But I can't run away, that's why I'm fighting. That's really all there is to me."

If you're in a crisis situation, don't tell people THAT. You should tell them that they are strong and help is on the way, not "I hate being here and we are all weak and not special but I guess I have to fight because I'm here."

They might have thought they were weak, but putting it in words has a great psychological effect. Especially if it comes from an authority figure evaluating them.

It has been shown that in the military, a drill instructor can say "Fight, goddamnit!" and things like that. That's okay. But if he says, "Fight you weak bastards!" that lowers performance. Then he's an authority figure who has judged them to be weak, and he has the experience to know. Then why make an effort when you know how low you are?

I'm sure we'll see how they're all roused to action by Subaru's speech. But in real life, that speech would give them an excuse to do nothing.

I was started to think this episode would be over-hyped from a lot of discussion I've seen surrounding the speech scene that happens during this episode, so I decided to try my best to keep my expectations low, but they ended up gradually being increased as I felt the shadow of the speech looming throughout the first half of the episode.

And then the speech happened, and being able to see Subaru's personality shine through was impressive, but as the speech continued, I found myself breaking into tears until I couldn't stop crying until the speech was finally over.

All of that is a long way of saying that this was an amazing, no- an incredible episode.

@Hegar Damn there hasn't been a single episode where Crunchyroll doesn't f-up some translations and drastically changes the nuances, but this episode got hurt the most by it due to being dialogue-heavy. I'm an anime-only so I don't know all the details in the source material, but here is what I interpreted from a more proper translation by Muse.

Hegar said:
"I guess I have to fight because I'm here."
Subaru actually said "Even so, I'm going to fight since I can't run away. That's just the sort of guy I am". This is a direct reference to what Rem told him in ss1 episode 18 "It's easy to give up. But it doesn't suit you." He knows he can't run away (from problems) without leaving behind the Subaru who Rem loves the most, who would face the challenges head-on for the people he cares about. Here he didn't "have to fight" because the role was forced onto him; on the contrary, he willingly chose to bear all the burden, to play the hero like he always has been doing despite being weak.

Hegar said:
Especially if it comes from an authority figure evaluating them.
Subaru wasn't trying to gain authority over the citizens and evaluating them from a high horse cuz his words would sound patronizing and fake. He in fact wanted to be on their level, a man of the people, to empathize with them so they can trust in what he believed should be the best to do because he was in their shoes.

Hegar said:
"Fight you weak bastards!"
No he literally told people not to take up arms but leave the fight to him and his comrades. He just asked them to believe in his winning chance and be hopeful (so the Archbishop of Wrath won't capitalize on their despair).

Hegar said:
he doesn't talk about a specific person before that.
知ってるこの子の笑顔 can be translated more literally as "The smile of this girl that I know". I think he specifically changed the subject to Emilia (part of 大切な人) now in this sentence.

Ughhh honestly, this show just wrecks my brain! like how is it even POSSIBLE to absolutely adore the world-building, the designs, the characters, oh my gosh, there are SO many unique and amazing characters I can’t get enough of, but then just passionately despise the protagonist? Subaru drives me completely up the wall! I swear, I find everything about him unbearable and beyond annoying. like, okay, I get that some people thought his little speech at the end was all profound or whatever, but I just can’t stand him so much that I literally skipped the whole thing.
@Aylr youre like the perfect audience for the novels then. Subaru's personality quirks seem exacerbated in the anime due to missing all the internal monologue of the novels. Also theres so much more subtle and not so subtle bits of worldbuilding that are always cut from the anime. I recommend reading it

Actual nothing burger of an episode. I'd say filler but what did we even fill? Not sure how that was supposed to be a motivational speech and why we needed a whole episode dedicated to it

@EdgeQueen I mean we also had a whole episode 18 in ss1 dedicated to Rem motivating Subaru to just not give up lol. Now he's doing the same for other people, in order to free them from the influence of Archbishop of Wrath's power, otherwise they can't begin the counterattack.

Overall probably the worst episode so far for me.
I think having the speech is fine, even if it was a bit cringe, but did we really need like 10+ minutes just discussing about who is going to even speak? The whole episode felt very filler.

I've seen so many takes from people who think Season 1 was the best but I must state that I disagree and by a pretty wide margin prefer Season 2. Which, now it's left me realizing once this season is over I should rewatch because I'm starting to think I'll prefer Season 3 by the time this is over, and that's impressive, especially for an Isekai/Harem Crossover anime to just constantly be getting better.

What an amazing episode. The scenes that went on during the speech were so pretty and Emilia is super mature for trusting her knight and handling the situation she is in all on her own. I hope this last episode doesn't leave me in a 3-month cliff hangar! ALSO REINHARDT IS HERE FINALLY!!!

Great speech Subaru, my son. You made me proud. In all seriousness, those were some motivating words from him that definitely boosted townspeople's morale and will help them to calm down and have faith. Now, the tough job is on the way.

Excellent episode, I think the message to inspire people had a lot of honesty... maybe too much haha but I loved it because it feels real, things are bad but it doesn't mean they are lost... we have to keep fighting
I liked what Al said, clarifying things about the load Subaru is taking but well... he always takes heavy loads so it's not new haha
It is true that from the outside it is strange the way Emilia expresses herself while she is captured but Subaru already washed her mind haha she knows that he is going to come for her that is why trust, faith, joy, etc.
Rainhard finally arrives, I would like to see more of Beatrice, I honestly hope that at some point she takes up more screen

PS: Well, last episode until February... :( but as long as it comes back, I won't complain so much :)

PS2: I just noticed that the episode lasted a little longer than normal, I didn't even realize haha, it's incredible how time flies when you see something you like

That was an excellent speech from Subaru. Sean did a great job portraying all the internal turmoil he was under while addressing the city. The witches cult's overconfidence just lost them their intimidating presence. I hope their losses continue!

Damn, that speech from Subaru was powerful that it actually made me tear up, like when I rewatched Hirzuen’s death in Naruto. Subaru is powerful with his words, reminiscent of Naruto in a way.

Emilia is pretty happy for someone who is being held prisoner, but she believes in Subaru, and now the whole town believes in him and now that Reinhard is here, things will likely turn around.

My question is who will the first target be. Sirius, Regulus, or Capella?

Either way, Subaru is about to lead the squad to victory no cap!

Bro finally realized he was the mc in the isekai. The speech part kinda hits home back in grade school, I remember having to take a leadership role in giving a speech in one of my debate classes and it kinda reminds me of how Subaru struggles to give out the speech. (my speech wasn't good as his tho). Alright episode i'd say tho, i wish they just start attacking the archbishops all together already.

Al getting a call from Emilia through Regulus's metia was unexpected, and at least she made a connection to the outside world, that's progress on the good side.

Al passing the message from Emilia to Subaru, any intel from within is critically vital, and No. 148 realizing the wedded bride's intention to run away, she just doesn't because of her innocence, that's to be expected. With the metia being the convergence point for Subaru and gang for their plans, that was once used by the Witch's Cult, they can use that in the same way to reengage hope in the people...albeit risking the city's people drowning once the watergates drop.

The only question is who's name is big enough to trounce the Witch's Cult, and even if it's for a Royal Selection candidate like Anastasia, it wouldn't be enough to sway the hearts of the people, not with the people that they have at the moment. That leaves Subaru being the only prime candidate (other than Reinhard) because of his stints against Sloth and the White Whale, as well as proving the knights wrong with their oh-so-mighty ego to bring them down to Earth, he has been through it all. Al knowing the danger most than anyone, and reaffirming Subaru to do the work, through the thick and thin, the angelic and the demonic, he is but the hero of the people.

As Emilia and No. 148's debate about being set free from Regulus's controls as his wives, Subaru getting on the metia to broadcast his speech to the people, it's quite the embarrassment, but he did manage to talk his heart out and boost the morale. And this in turn, reconfirms Emilia's thoughts to No. 148 about the hope that comes with never giving-up strength.

Emilia's wedding is a go, and Otto's wild card of Reinhard coming back, this plan must not fail. Bravo Subaru, SPEECH MAN, SPEECH.

Of course, it has to be Subaru who gives the speech. He is the MC after all.
But that speech hit me harder than I expected. I almost teared up a little hearing it. I'm curious about how the arch bishops will react to the speech.
