Gee, this spiralled into an endless downward loop right after episode 1. Hardly any proper explanations except for an old legend/curse-ish, can't seriously buy into that now, I can I?

It moved from being horror to some god awful random things happening left and right. I could hardly remember anything about Tanizaki-san before this episode, xD. And time passes differently in the village? Also, why did Chie-chan come back to the village too? I don't remember her trying to particularly save anyone...

Cycle continues, eh? Cosmic horror to the core which honestly is almost always a miss for me.

This having just 6.71 is a crime, I get it's not a good adaptation after episode 1 but it's still much better than 99% of the shitty series y'all enjoy watching, fuck this braindead community
@TheRealRouges Go and read the manga, then you'll get why it's at 6.67. Manga was really good, 9/10. This adaptation butchered it

Animation has some good points in this episode, but ultimately the descent part is poorly animated. Well, I'm glad it's over now.

I dont really know if I like it or not, haha. Fact is I was entertained throughout all the episodes. I rarely had the feeling to speed the anime up or drop it or something. So thats a good sign. But the anime is not great at the same time. Pacing is fast but I am actually happy about it now, not wasting any time. Especially with that generic horror ending. Not telling anyone what happened, keeping the mystery up, everyone died (?) in the end or got part of that weird ruins and the evil remains and is going on killing. With that ending in mind Im glad the anime was not 12 episodes long lol.

Overall this was not the anime of the decade as people here announced it lmao. But I was not seriously believeing that to happen, its just funny to me thinking about that now. Its an okay show with a mediocre/bad ending, I was disgusted often but overall its rather generic, nothing too special about it. So its probably going to be a 6/10 for me.

This may not have been as faithful as reading the manga but it was still good nonetheless. 8/10

Could it have been better? of course but i'm fine with it as it is.

I can get that if you were expecting a masterpiece, and got this, you would be upset.

Personally, as someone who did not know even the source material existed, I found it entertaining, mediocre, but entertaining. Ep 1 was good, Ep 2 was a trainwreck, and then Ep 3 and 4 were okayish. It had a lot of criticize: the pacing, the stupidity of most of the subplots, the animation of course, the ending... But like other poster said, I did not feel like just dropping it.

Know basically nothing about the manga, still this was one of the worst things I have seen in a long time. At least it had me laughing several times through out the episodes, easy 3/10.

Well, it was kinda like episode 3: had some good moments, but it was overall ok and had massive flaws scattered through some scenes. It's a total disrespect to Nagahama's work, who got fired after episode 1.

@Yuxkta I read the manga bro, even with the subpar animations and fast pacing is still an 8/10 (I gave manga a 9/10 too). It's still miles better than all the others Junji Ito anime adaptations. Episode 1 is still the best anime episode of all time visually, tbh. Too bad it could have been great, but it's still way more than decent

First episode was super promising, then the second episode tanked in quality and ruined the overall experience. Also doesn't help that they rushed the thing into 4 episodes. 5 years of waiting just for this to be what came out. Sad, really. Overall, 5/10.

Never read Uzumaki myself, but I thought this anime was OK at best. The first episode seems to unanimously be considered amazing (which I agree with), though the later episodes all seemed just a bit lame in comparison, especially in terms of animation but also story-wise. I wish there was some actual explanation to anything, other than just "big spiral ruins cause curse." It just felt like a bit of a cop-out, and a disappointment considering how strong the first episode was. It kind of reminds me of how I felt about the Tokyo Ghoul anime, with it starting out so strong but just never explaining anything later on.

After I saw the first episode, I said this could be one of the greatest horror animes of all time. But they wasted this potential with the bad animation (Especially in 2nd and 3rd episodes) also I feel they rushed the story, they could tell the story in let's say 7 episodes but they decide to make it 4.

However, it was unique experience and definitely I'm going to read the manga, to see the differences. Because from all the hype that was around this anime, the manga should be great

I understand that everyone is disappointed (i am too) but people are overreacting too much, it doesnt deserve less than 6,5 rating (and it keeps going down)

It's a shame that all the time spent adapting this work didn't bear much fruit due to production issues; the animation took a big hit in some episodes and the pacing wasn't very good. But even with all that, the story was somewhat entertaining at times and the horror themes were grotesque and disturbing, so it wasn't all bad. We'll have to wait for a really good adaptation of Junji Itou's works.

I respect Shuuichi for managing to survive all that cataclysm and for being ready to endure it again in the loop. Spiral/10.

Anime-only here, and if everything that happened in this episode was in the manga then I gotta say, it didn't matter if the overall show had better pacing and animation, nothing was saving this story.
Normally when I see people online mention Junji Ito Uzumaki is also mentioned as a horror classic, but if this was the story more-or-less then I really don't get the hype at all.
6/10 it made me laugh way more than I thought and episode 1 was still really good, so I can't say I completely wasted my time.

It was all in all rather unusual adaptation. (I've never seen anything similar before).
Perhaps in the future it could open the doors to other manga adaptations that were thought would not work as anime.
It was an interesting experiment.

F in chat for all those Uzumaki fans who waited five years... for this.

Disastrous adaptation. Personally speaking, the decision of making this only four-episode long was what doomed the project from the beginning. I mean, animation from Ep.2 onwards was awful without a single doubt but the handle of pacing was even worse in my opinion.

I thought I was watching something special after episode 1 but episode 2 ended up being bad which was followed by an explanation from one of the producers of the production issues this series had.

At least the final episode explained why Kirie and her boyfriend couldn't leave the city and that they were essentially doomed. On that note there was no follow up with Kirie's younger brother that had turned into a snail but crawled down a cliff, did he make it out? Did he turn back into a human? This may never get answered, at least not by the anime.

While the series as a whole was a letdown I was still somewhat drawn into finishing this series because I wanted to see how this ended and it was an ok ending I suppose although they didn't show how much time had passed since the last time the town was cursed. 6/10

This series was always cursed to have a disappointing final episode due to the final volume of the manga being the weakest part of the series. Overall the first episode did this a disservice by being some of the most beautiful horror animation which is sad because the rest of the show looks good minus the two to five seconds that are cherry picked and bitched about on twitter. This was consistently a great adaptation of the manga and the only show to make Junji Ito’s work scary on the screen.

@naens Aside from the high level of detail there isn't much about Ito's work that means it has to always be adapted so poorly. It's too bad that Ito didn't do his stuff in the 80s when he could've gotten a sick OVA made by some nutjobs in a sweatshop. Now he's cursed to have nobody studios mangle his work over and over.

I think the final two episodes were "fine". The overall product is quite bad and the horrendous quality of episode 2 destroy the momentum of the series. Having even an okay episode in a 4 episode OVA is a huge hurdle to overcome but when its that bad you're cooked. And its not like episodes 3 and 4 were good enough to overcome any sort of stumble anyway.

Well, at least this anime motivated me to read the manga and that was great. Too bad that this is a pretty poor adaptation of it. The pacing in this episode felt pretty horrible, it was as if it moved at almost 2x speed, everything was just a rush to cram everything inside (and even then a lot wasn't included). Animation was a bit better than the last two episodes though.

For anyone who watched this but didn't check the manga, try it out. It's a short read and it's so, so much better than this adaptation.

The animation that made Episode 1 great has returned. It was enjoyable to watch the rest of the story, however convoluted and bland it was, come back animated in great detail. Uzumaki was plagued with misfortune in its animation in the middle half. In the end, it finished strong and that's the nice thing.

Well, that was certainly something. Definitely an absolute disappointment, but still an experience.

I was not satisfied with Shuichi's and Kirie's ending at all and it's probably due to how we got there with how fucked the pacing is. But I guess the ending itself is cool with literally the whole town spiraling, hibernating, then spiraling again for some reason, but with different people.

I'll definitely set aside some time in the future to read the manga, but man still, what a shame for the anime.

I thought episode 4 was the strongest of the four both visually and spooks/story-wise. They did a good job covering the snail cannibalism and time warping in the mountains which were two of my favorite parts from the manga. This snail cannibalism always makes me uncomfortable. Pulling their friend around on a rope-leash so he can't escape. Talking about how they want to eat him once he turns while he's still human and hearing their conversation. Then there's them chasing after Mitsuo. I also liked the extra scene after the first credits, which I don't believe was in the manga. Looks like Kirie and Shuichi were reincarnated and gender-swapped to replay the curse?

I'm giving this an 8 because I loved episode 4 a lot and 1 was really good too. And, while I was disappointed by episodes 2 and 3 and the pacing overall, it wasn't THAT bad. It was just a downgrade. It could have been so much better if it had better pacing (maybe 1-2 extra episodes) and obviously better animation quality in those two middle episodes.

I'm not saying they did a good job, but I feel like this adaptation just made apparent to everyone what I always disliked about the manga. It's got spectacle value, which is why I watched, but everything is so random and, frankly, silly. Better pacing may enhance the creepiness, but it was always a pretty dumb story.
