Edit: I would like to apologize for my hubris, I am in emotional turmoil, and this show might actually be peak.

I have to be honest, I'm disappointed so far. The visual design of this show is fantastic, the concepts and ecchi are absurd in the most fun way possible, and science saru is more than delivering in terms of production, but the script and story are just so damn weak.

It just jumped into the action, with very little to chew on in terms of investment, and the character dynamics are beyond forced or I should say rushed in order to just get things going.

This is the EXACT problem undead + unluck had with how it started, but then once the real plot started to unravel, I actually started to get invested. JJK had this to a degree too, which is why I want to believe it's a by product of shounen titles trying to get into it as fast as possible, in fear of being cancelled too early.

So, My question is, did I just have too high of an expectation? or is this just a weak start (in terms of writing/story/characters)?

Like when I saw the scenes from ep 1 and 2 in the trailer, I was beyond curious on what the context was, and now I just feel like I got scammed lol

Well, as an anime-only as myself, I say don't fret too much about it, it's just the 2nd episode, I try not to judge an anime this early but so far I'm enjoying it and that's all that matters to me.

I wasn't impressed with the beginning of Steins;Gate either but I gave that anime a chance, it got awesome later on and it ended up becoming my best anime.

@xZabuzax Steins;gate's start is incredible. It's a perfectly paced, and well put together set up, and steins;gate has 10/10 dialogue from the start.

The reason a lot of people find the start uninteresting, is not because it's weak, it's because some people just find the idea of a set up like this to be boring. Like steins;gate's start being "slow" to some people is not a flaw in the show's storytelling. it's just the nature of this type of story not being as casual friendly.

This is the opposite. It creates no intrigue, and has had no notable set up or sign of impressive writing, but instead it's been 2 episodes of bat shit, off the wall craziness. which is entertaining, but that entertainment is coming from "cool shit happening". Nothing about the story or characters or dialogue is really doing anything interesting.

@Chainsaw_Derp Yes... that's why I'm asking to be told It will get good as they say. Also, calm down? bro this is like the least "angry" critique on the internet. are we at a point where a normal discussion can not exist? Is the default assuming someone is mad?

That's actually kinda sad... not that it's on you.

@APolygons2 I mostly agree with you there, Steins;Gate is a slow-burn which plenty of people will find slow and boring in the first couple of episodes, it took me a couple of episodes to really get into it and get emotionally attached to the characters, not a flaw of the anime, but it was a necessary evil because without the 1st half to get me attached to the characters I wouldn't have liked the 2nd half this damn much.

And for this anime, I just take it for what it is, I just enjoy it for the craziness and so far I'm good with it, I don't think there will be anything deep here, this is the type of anime where I just have to turn my brain off and enjoy it for what it is.

I wouldn't have a problem with it being that. It's not like I'm not liking it. I was just hoping manga readers will come out and tell me it's more than that.

But as you said, I'm also still enjoying it for what it is!

They will grow on you I promise. The way they talk to each other and bicker is honestly great. This anime can easily switch from balls to the wall action to romance and then to comedy. They don’t have like a thought provoking backstory’s like guts or Naruto but they’re fun to watch and root for.

I’ve read all the chapters until now and it’s amazing. Love every single bit of it, but the story itself isn’t that deep mostly because that’s not really the focus. It delevops really well the carachters, the comedy and action are top notch and also have really nice romantic moments (and what a miracle it is to see an action anime really develop one like this). So if you are seeking for an anime with some more focus to the story telling to it like AOT, Naruto, Steins Gate, FMA, Kimetsu, MHA,… I don’t think you Will like it very much. But if an 10/10 action/comedy packed anime is what you seek you’ve found it! ;)

dawg this is a straight you problem relationship isn't forced you for some reason think people can't meet for the first time and form some sort of bond is utter bs especially in life or death high stakes situations the reason you start to like the shows you list better is cause the characters were flushed out more barely any anime of any genre is going to have fully flushed out characters within a couple episodes 👎🏻

@FreedomKME It's funny cause what you just said here isn't true to the point of it being genuinely funny to me (you can check my list).

The backstory drops were actually my biggest "bleh" points in episode 1. I don't want info dumps, if anything, I would have rathered have less dialogue, and slower pacing, while having more information send through action and having more time to get invested.

I just don't buy their relationship or dialogue as interactions from 2 people who just met, life or death or not. I found the 2 scenes of them explaining their backstory specially jarring within their context.

If you have seen undead unluck, it's a good way of seeing what I mean. Either way, still great show, I just wanted to see if I should expect it to be even better later on.

Tbh, my favorite is a character that is introduced with great writing in a board game arc which will likely be the third season or smth.

The formula is pretty simple, but executed in a fun and enjoyable way that expands the world to introduce other known Cryptids, strange aliens, ghosts, and how they affect the main characters (usually with special powers and fights)

It’s definitely not nearly as complex as steins;gate though, so don’t expect any crazy plot twists or development.

If anything, it will take less time to read it now and find out yourself than be disappointed while waiting every week and watching each 20 minute episode.

In my opinion, I really find the world building and out of the box concepts really interesting to see unfold. Sometimes he will have explanations phenomena and tying it to the world of DanDaDan (such as explaining ancient uses of old structures, origins of life, etc.) in a creative manner.

That being said, its a pretty lighthearted and goofy(besides the obvious SA threat).

If you thought that the first two episodes were a scam, I would love to hear more about why you personally thought that (especially since its pacing is exactly as it should be compared to the manga with great voice acting from sub and dub and even better art direction from the storyboard and animation team), but its likely a show that is not for you if you dislike it for any reason, you likely have valid reasons!!

It just depends on what you’re into. Some people enjoy an anime that introduces the fighting early because it hooks them and gives them an expectation on what the animation will be like for future episodes.

Then there’s some who like to get to know the story and characters a bit first so the action stuff that comes later can be easier to digest, you can become familiar with what you’re watching that way.

It’s a good series no matter which side you’re on because the story actually begins to pick up later in the manga, so I’d give it time. 2 episodes isn’t enough for a feel of the entire series yet.

bit of a tangent here, I did try out the anime, and genuinely felt slow to me for the first 9~ish episodes i watched sometime ago. I have the VN, I'm not certain if it's well worth the time sink to go through the VN, or just push through and watch the anime. What do you recommend?

Also, yeah - that's valid criticism. Dandadan's start is very weak and also quite rough when pitted against the rest of the chapters that came out. It's only uphill from here on out tbh. I can only assume that the way the author made the first chapter was intended to capture its readers and hook them in from the get go. While the prologue's quite weak for sure, the meat of story starts to shine when we get introduced to the rest of the cast, and that's where you'll get to see the dynamics of the characters and how good of a chemistry the MC (Momo) has with the rest of the characters.

@BaseLion I actually think the anime is better than the vn which I have also read. It removed most of the weaker aspects, and improves on the good stuff, along with having incredible directing and having a bigger soundtrack despite the shorter runtime. And specially if you have found what SG has at the start boring, the VN has a LOT more of that... so It would probably be a bad idea for more reasons than one.

I have 2 suggestions:

1. watch a few more episodes. you're close to the turning point of the series, which is the point that even the people who find the start boring, will start loving the series.

2. Try the dub as well. It also has a legendary cast, and it feels very different despite still being faithful, you may get more into it if you watch it dubbed. Personally, I myself prefer the dub, and it's the reason for why J.Michael Tatum is my favourite voice actor.

I think the first episode did a pretty good job at weaving some backstory/motives throughout the action and using the absurdity to transition smoothly between phases in the action. So in that regard, I liked the writing in the first episode.

But it is difficult to build up the plot/characters when the story is so full of action, so admittedly I'm not particularly invested in the characters, and especially not the plot at this point. So when I found the action to be weaker in ep2 (was still decent), it didn't have anything else to fall back on which made this issue more apparent to me. I do hope that the story takes a break from all the action for a bit just to focus on the characters, but it seems like it will take a bit for that to happen given the cliffhanger in ep2. It was still decent tbh, we were clued in to the relationship between aliens/spirits and we got confirmation that the grandma's powers were real all along.

you will got mix feeling i guess.
support character design and arc is too poor(I mean their personality and characteristics) similar with "Kimetsu no Yaiba", until you don't want to hear their lore.

and Okarun's development is very slow, to the point of becoming a burden for Momo. well forget about Okarun, we still have Momo, Seiko and Turbo Granny who can be relied on for comedy and fighting.

at least the story can still be enjoyed.

Rest assured. I want to keep it spoiler - free but there are backstories that will be revealed later on in the series, probably in 5 or 6 more episodes. For the first few episodes, they just want you to experience the crazyness and "weirdness" of the series. The character development is relatively slow in the manga also, especially with Okarun considering he was always a loner until now. But yeah the characters will grow on you i'm sure. And yeah this manga writing is immaculate in terms of weirdness

Yeah this is a very common problem with modern shounen manga for the exact reason you pointed out, they're too fast-paced you don't have the time to care about anything, there's also the constant goofiness that makes it hard to take anything seriously, Kaiju No.8 is the best example, JJK and Kimetsu no Yaiba have this problem too until they decide to get real, and Dandadan seems more like a comedy than anything, it does give Kill la Kill vibes though, it's fun so far.
