Even though I didn’t read the manga, I saw several panels, and it was worth it for the shock I experienced. I loved it! The animation and the decision to use black and white were brilliant, and I was amazed by it. I'm going to enjoy it more than you can imagine. It's a different kind of horror, driven by discomfort and eeriness.

I guess this is the ADHD version of Junji Ito’s seminal work. I don’t particularly blame the studio or the director for the speed run of the story. You have only 4 episodes to do it, you gotta take some creative liberties. The rotoscoping and B&W filming works well for the story. I do really like the music. It’s certainly a lot better than the Junji Ito Collection anime.

@RawrOfTheEmo @TaifSux
I felt the same way. I loved the manga, so the pacing in this first episode felt way off. The acting and animation was great, but the pacing really... just was NOT it. I wanted way more ambience, dread and the such, to linger with moments. But instead it felt like we were instantly transported from scene to scene to move forward. I'm hoping it's just because they want to get to the meat of the story and that the pacing will feel better in the coming, longer, episodes.

@olivebowlr
Strong disagree. The pacing was... just... I barely even had time to feel like I had landed in the anime before things started to... spiral. Heh. But for real, if the whole anime will be like this I won't be getting much from the show beyond seeing what things might look like in motion. The pacing is the only thing I feel was off in this episode. If the whole thing is only meant to be 90 minutes I have trouble figuring out how they're going to do it justice. The animation will be nice to look at though.

@Prox1mately It's kinda the pacing of the manga too though.
I think they adapted almost everything from chapters 1 and 3, often times every panel on the page too. For chapter 2, they skipped most of it including the pay off, so either it will be skipped or adapted next episode.
The manga is the same, like quickly gets everything out of the way for the horror scenes to come in. The only thing slowing the pacing is perhaps your reading speed, otherwise it would be just as fast or faster.
The manga equivalent of what was adapted takes less than 10 minutes to read imo. (unless you're pausing on a page)

Just for a refresher of memory, chapter 1 already covers everything with the dad, including his death, up to the point where they notice the smoke in just 44 pages.
Chapter 3 covers everything with the scar girl, including her death, in only 32 pages.

Looks stylish on the one hand but this bw artstyle completely ruins the mood on another afm. Be done i style of 90's anime it could look waaay more emotional. Also, this is not what happened to Dreamcast.

just finished watching the first episode and i must say as a huge fan of the manga and other Junji Ito works they really nailed it with the animation, it almost feels like the manga brought to life, they definitely cooked with the animation! my biggest issue is with the script writing tho like when you adapt a manga into an anime you write it in a way that it doesn't feel too fast or rushed but this episode felt super rushed and stories sometimes felt slapped randomly together other than that this is acc a good adaptation

I don't usually comment much here, but in this case I felt obliged.

More than 4 years of production for a copy and paste of the manga?

Many people are praising the 'art', which is practically the same as the manga's frames but with inferior lines, static frames, and not very fluid animation, which many say is a unique artistic style, but they used this sloppiness to camouflage their laziness.

They don't understand that an adaptation shouldn't be 100% faithful to the manga, especially a 'unique' work that obviously wouldn't work very well in other media.

Never understood why people like junji ito but this anime feels more funny than some actual comedies like shikanokotan

Ya they are so trash lol. Never even felt any horror from his work, just creepy and disgusting shits
@Apratim Things being creepy is part of horror. And to each their own on being trash I guess. I personally don’t see it that way but whatever.

Why, just why they rushed so much in the very first episode? I feel bad for newcomers, they won't understand anything with that pacing, in the first episode they started at least 4 chapters at the same time (1, 2, 3 and 8). And the first 2 (to me the best ones) they skipped entire scenes. I was hyped for this show, it had been years that it was announced... they should have delayed more and present us something less rushed. I feel just disappointed...

I see why Junji Ito's work has the reputation it does after seeing this. Making something as simple as spirals this genuinely unsettling is amazing. The dad's death and the mom in the hospital were the most unsettling parts to me.

This was a good first episode but the pacing was a bit too fast. The animation is amazing but the creepiness factor is a miss for me, no tension whatsoever and most of the introduction are one dimensional. Still, the atmosphere and style is very appealing so I'll continue watching for now

@henwens you are gaslighting youself if you think anime covered everything in chapter 1....They even skipped the first of Kirie seeing Sunichi's father in the dark allyway, there was more conversation between Shinichi and Kirie ,they skipped an entire scene of them sitting in a parl, there was more interactions between Shinichi's Family and his dad spcically where shinici's mom throws everything and a scene where Kirie goes to visit shinici's house and see his dad spiraling eyes....

and about chapter 3 they barely showed anything including the boys rising the mystrey of Azami's head and only after than Kirie curious seeing her at head, and there were two entire scenes where Azami goes to visit Shinichi specially the one at the night....

Manga followed a solid methodical approach, at first they hinted some mystery, then they build the mystery by showing us some interactions between the central characters and others and only after than they hit with the main horror stuffs to end the chapter..,,The anime just covers the chapters main panels and skips the majority of the pretext leading upto those panels..

HOLYYYYYY Junji Ito you are a masterclass istg and the animators who worked on this did a phenomenal ass job on this, the 2D animation is so well done that this shit sometimes looks like cgi with how smooth the characters be moving and shit and the creepy factor was just *chefs kiss*😩🀌🏽πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

I forgot how creepy this shit was until I saw Shiuchi’s dad roll his tongue into a spiral and Azami and her spiral right eye was the iconic scene that I forgot until she was about to reveal herself but man it’s so cool seeing in spirals in action instead of seeing them in manga form🀩🀩🀩🀩

I see a lot of ppl complaining about the pacing and tbh I thought it was fine + there’s only like 19 chapters in this series and we’re only getting 4 episodes so I’m sure the production crew thought of this already and know that 4 episodes for 19 chapters will be enough SO STOP SHITTING ON THE PACING😠

Anyways can’t wait for the second episode I’m definitely tuning in every week for this :DπŸ™ŒπŸ½

@TaifSux yeah, I feel that everyone who's praising the pacing either never read the manga or is just a fanboy. The animation is great and it's nice to see some scenes in motion, but they're skipping too many scenes, it feels like a summary of the manga instead of an adaptation

Amazing atmosphere; maybe we finally have an answer as to how Berserk may be adapted? Though, and it's probably because of the pacing, I think there could be a bit more set-up and I'm sure the horror will land harder.
