Actually those vids you can see on YouTube with people overreacting when a White European / American dude start speaking Japanese are probably staged. Speaking Japanese in Japan is as normal as the sun rising on morning. Nobody reacted in any special way. (Which is quite nice cuz seeing someone overreacting once on YouTube is fun but in day to day life having the whole scene eveytime you want to order a pancake would be quite a bother)

Yes they could tell I was a foreigner (maybe they thought I was younger than 19 since I look like a 15-16 yo kid when I shave) but Japanese is a language like any other and speaking it in it's land doesn't stand out. (I'm pretty sure speaking French there would have make me stand out way much more than I did with Japanese)
